Some people just thrive in chaos when most avoid it at all cost.
@theWilburM3 жыл бұрын
I used to work for a company that tests employment/advancement candidates with traits testing. I took the tests myself and scored off the charts in what they called "ambiguity tolerance". I came to understand that I thrived in uncertain and even chaotic situations--that it was a huge relative advantage. I realized later in life that I was fond of creating chaos because I was comfortable with it and good at it. But it's a double-edged sword: sometimes you just make it harder for yourself. I think that's Ben in a nutshell. He's maturing to realize that he doesn't have to create chaos to succeed... he can simply use those skills when the situation arises but without the cost and energy required to have all chaos, all the time.

I'm not sure there's been a player over the last two decades that I always feel like can single-handedly keep their team in a game/win a game more than Big Ben. Makes incredible plays. Battles. Always seems to make things happen when absolutely necessary. The Steelers were beyond mediocre last year when he went down. With him back, they are 9-0. Just a beast of a QB and team leader. It really underlines how good the Patriots have been in the AFC over that time to keep this guy to only two Super Bowls.
@brosephh71303 жыл бұрын
That year off was the best thing for him. It got his mind right, and helped him reignite his passion for the game. You can tell that he worked hard on recovery and really put a lot of time in the offseason. To go out after an elbow injury during the twilight of his career, have no preseason, and be able to put together one of his best seasons with MVP consideration is pretty remarkable. Steelers fans may not see such a dominant HOF franchise QB of his caliber again in our lifetimes, and we need to savor every moment of his final years. A true legend.

Big Ben hand crafted AB's highlight reel.
@brosephh71303 жыл бұрын
It’s those “unsound” backyard style plays that crafted it. Making and sometimes forcing throws that would be disastrous for almost any other QB. Regardless of the matchup, they just made it happen with sheer talent and a little luck. Reminded me of Tom Brady and Randy Moss in 2007. Brady threw balls up in double coverage but he knew for a fact that only Randy was gonna come down with it. Without the massive egos in the locker room, Ben is getting the ball to whoever is open. No more throwing water coolers.

@@brosephh7130 There's some truth to this trust factor, but those two built a highlight reel of perfectly placed, on-time balls on excellent routes to go along with their crazier moments. They might have had the best out-route connection in the history of the game.

Thank you for the Ben video... always interested to hear Ben's idiosyncratic play broken down by someone who understands what's happening. One difference of opinion from this, though--I think he was definitely pump faking with intent on the Claypool TD... and IMO it's why the LB fell down. He's going to Claypool from the jump and trying to get that Drop LB to get moving the wrong way so he can throw it behind or over him. It's a lot harder, obviously, to make a play on a high ball if your momentum is carrying you away from the catch point. As you said, we're not in the room, but Ben's receivers are saying he is calling the routes from scratch and telling them the ball is coming. IIRC, Claypool said postgame Ben told him he was getting it before this play. BTW I am a huge fan of your show--one of the very best football shows on this website.

That crazy play when he turned down the hot route was situational. It was 3rd and goal and I think he wanted the TD so he turned down the crosser.

On the pump fake throw there is a behind angle where he sees the middle linebacker and looks him off with a pump then throws the slant to Claypoole. So you may be mistaken from that angle.

@MrIsaahck3 жыл бұрын
Just a comment. At minute 10:24, you can clearly see that the defender had already initiated its run to the flat route, same reason why he tripped. Number 57 had already been erased from the play. I don't Think be would've thrown to Claypool if the LB hadn't taken the bait. I too think that was not a pump fake, but I still think it was great QB thinking.

I like sound QB, I advocate for it. I like Mac Jones more than most because of that fact. That's also why I seem to not like a lot of Young QB's. However, there are some QB's, like Big Ben, like Deshaun Watson, Like Russell Wilson, etc, who are just straight up freaks and they can do things no one else on planet earth can do. In those situations you kind of have to look and be like "They did it, I don't know how they did it, but they did it." and go from there. I love Ben Roethlisberger and am thankful to have had him all these years.

Super detailed analysis! Love it and I love how you look at what Ben "should" do. I do think that "pull down" was a pump. Like you say, if the corner is there and throwing there is amateur hour, then why would Ben be considering it in the first place? The pump actually breaks 57's ankles. That's why he fell. Watch that timing. So Ben clearly wanted Claypool from the beginning, he never looks left (and might have had a man open) but decided to shake the coverage and create space for Claypool. Ben is usually operating on this 4D chess level. He sometimes guesses wrong, but the man only had 5 INTs this year and his pump is one of the best in the game.
@trickydec3 жыл бұрын
For the JuJu TD, it did look like Ben was looking to Diontae on the crossing route first, but the blitzer coming free on his right side of his vision cut off the angle of his throwing arm so Ben stepped up into the pocket to avoid him?

I need some all-22 of Ben as I would have liked to see what the middle of field player was doing on that first deep ball to Johnson, but I know it isn't out yet so I will take what I can get lol. Definitely get what you are saying about Ben though, not great teaching tape. I thought that TD to Juju was classic Ben being Ben but it also would have still been "Ben being Ben" if that would have been an INT. He is like a gambler on a insane hot streak right now.
@theWilburM3 жыл бұрын
This seems like a good time to point out that the narrative about Ben throwing an abnormally high number of INTs is... incontradiction to the facts. He has a lower INT % than every QB in the HOF and lower than such contemporaries as Phil Rivers, Peyton Manning, & Tony Romo. His gambling "hot streak" is a bit longer than expected.

JT, on the hot play in which you said you would have thrown the shallow to Johnson, I'd like to question your call, if I may. My thoughts are, with the OLB coming off the edge unblocked, and from what I can see, Ben looking center left, how does he first recognize the post snap coverage and then off his back foot, set to throw right, and step into the throw to the flat? That OLB is coming straight at his throwing arm, and while Ben certainly has the size and power to throw through the guy rushing him and still possibly get the ball over there, that still seems to me like an awfully tough play to make, even for Ben. Not really trying to argue your thoughts, I'm just a 45 year old armchair QB who never played the game. But I do consider myself something of a student of the game, and I love what you do here. Information like what you provide was so hard to come by before you started this up, so I'm really just asking your thoughts on my thoughts lol. You're awesome, thanks again! #horseshoe4life
@TheQBSchool3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for comment. Usually your eyes are/should be to where you are responsible for the hot, e.g., right here (pun intended). Then, if hot the throw is to the area the pressure vacated, i.e., the shallow, from what I remembered. I didn’t go back and watch. So for me his initial eyes don’t align with pressure concerns/protection. Either poor play design or poor eye discipline or both.

@QB Coach, I gotta disagree with you on a few points and quite frankly, As someone who “doesn’t like to review Ben”, I don’t think you see the value or understand a playmaker like ben. It’s his X factor which you have slightly touched on. It what’s makes him great. His pump fakes, ability look away, step up in the pocket, shrug off defenders and make throws while people are pulling on him. Other QB’s are limited to strictly reads such as High low concepts etc. You incorrectly dissected claypools first touchdown. The defender did not slip, he reacted to Ben’s pumpfske and ate dirt, which opened up a passing lane that led to a TD. Other QB’s don’t make that play and throw the flat or RB dump off instead.
