I'm going out there next month and I had pretty much decided that trail hiking would be out of my range of physical ability, but many of the trails you showed here are so well developed that I actually think I can do one or two of those! Just watched your video and I love that park! FYI, the campsites and lodging at Chisos basin are often booked a year in advance. Not a good idea to visit the park in the summer unless you get out real early. Temps over 110 degrees are normal, especially along the river. It is possible to get lucky and get a room at the lodge due to a cancellation if the weather turns bad. The last time I was there was in Sept 2020 and the park had just reopened partially due to the pandemic. There had been a lot of rain and flooding of the Rio Grande was widespread. The road to Santa Elena was closed. The desert and area was amazing with blooming wildflowers, etc due to the rains, especially the cenizo-purple sage. No safety concerns what so ever. Remember, the park is vast and there are not many roads in or out. It is also full of park rangers and law enforcement. Ranger stations make up the majority of the buildings, and we saw the rangers often driving around looking for dehydrated tourist ;o). Even though it is on the border, it is not a place for border traffic. Just go and enjoy!

Hi! Did you have good cellphone service and GPS? I am going in April with a hiking group.

I have Verizon as my cellular service, and I remember loosing service as soon as I entered the park. While some parks have better service than others, Big Bend is so large and spread out, that the service was not so great. Closer to the visitor center and lodge area, it was better, especially around the Chisos Basin area, and near Panther Junction., and whenever I got close to the Visitor Center, all my texts would come in at once lol. I connected to Wi-Fi service at the park whenever I could to get emails or upload pictures. I sometimes wondered what would happen if we broke down, so it is something to consider. Be prepared and always carry water.

Great video. I'll be going there for my first time next week. It's for a project this time, at a water pump station that's being upgraded but I hope to take some time to enjoy the park. I'll be at the south east corner of the park. Do you recommend anything near that area of the park? Thanks!

Thanks for watching! It is a long way into the park. I would recommend stopping at the Panther Junction Visitor Center (main visitor center) to get information and talk to the rangers about what to do. The only thing in the Southeast is the Rio Grande Village and Boquillas Canyon Trail (we hiked that trail in the video), but it will be very hot while you are there. It is a very big park, so I would try to plan ahead and research online in order to save time.

When is the best times to visit there? I know the Summer Times are extremely hot to visit.

That is a tricky question, but you are correct, it can be extremely hot. If I had to do it over, I think I would visit in mid May, after the rains start and everything is in full bloom. We were there just before the rains and it was very dry. It was the driest of the year, but you could tell everything was ready to bust out in blooms. I would like to see it while everything is green. It is also cooler in the higher elevations where the lodge is. Quite a diverse climate!

I have been to Big Bend many times. Late October - Early April is best. May & June, on average, are the hottest months. Not that July and August are cool.

Really? You went for a hike at 106F without water? You are a bad influence on would be visitors. Never hike without water in those kinds of temperatures.

Hmmm, not sure what you heard James, but we drank an entire bottle of water before our hike, took water with us and I advised many times how important hydration is per the ranger's advice. But thanks for reminding everyone how dangerous heat can be. 🙂
