"Barrier blind", good expansion and decent penetration. Both are winners; I already use this .45 load in my G21, good to see another test showing it's performance. (Just because I know somebody's going to bring it up, >18" isn't "overpenetration". In the F.B.I.'s own words, it's the upper limit of the minimum desired range. The famous report stated that more penetration is better than less, and the only reason they stopped measuring at 18" is because that's how long the jello blocks were. If one is going to accept the F.B.I. tests, then you can't say that >18" is undesirable. I believe GS_RA has said that in this type of gelatin, bullets penetrate ~twice as much as in flesh. I want a big hole in, and a big hole out. By the time a bullet deforms, and if it gets through the desired target, it's not going to be fast enough to be very dangerous, especially compared to any that miss. If a beefy target were sideways and the bullet had to go through the arm before hitting the side of the chest - a la Miami - even this .44 Mag load probably wouldn't exit the target. )

I actually liked how both of those performed. Between the two, I would be carrying the 44 Magnum. But my 44 only holds six. With bad guys beginning to attack in large numbers, the ability to line up a shot and shoot two of them with one bullet seems pretty good to me. Also exit wounds are generally worse than entrance wounds.

Getting reliable expansion with the old 45 ACP is pretty darn tough for ammo makers. It needs to be up to 1000FPS to get it and if you are using a commander or shorter bbl not likely to have that velocity. One of the reasons I like 9mm better for a defensive round. The 44 is obviously too much penetration as you would expect.
@vlogfriendsutopia
@vlogfriendsutopia 2 жыл бұрын
Modern 45 ACP ammunition from reputable brands has no problems expanding even at low velocities from short barrels. Federal is always my go to. Only reason the plain gel round didn't expand was because it hit the wire, no fault of the bullet itself.
@GunSam
@GunSam 2 жыл бұрын
The bullet designs are just not particularly good. Velocity doesn't necessarily cause expansion as I have seen .357 rounds going 1,200 FPS with a bad design not expand, and a heavier bullet at 750 FPS get good expansion. It's all about the energy pushing against the design. A nice short barrel bullet 230 gr Gold Dot could very well expand at sub 800 FPS.

After you mentioned that the last shot fired from the 44 Magnum was lower than the rest it came to my mind that mayhap the one bullet that failed to reach the heart of a thug in the FBI's Miami shootout in 86 had a lower velocity also which is why it failed. Kinda silly that the FBI decided to search for a better caliber based on the results of just one shot. You are doing a much needed public service in demonstrating the differences twixt calibers. The F.B.I. needed a scapegoat for their tactical, public & embarrassing failure, so they decided it was the ammo's fault. There was only one handload in the following tests, the light 10mm that mimicked existing .45 ACP performance, and whadaya know that's the one they picked. They couldn't admit that the solution was already out there, so they had to invent something new.

Unfortunately factory ammo isn’t the best ballistic performance you can get out of cartridges; you can defiantly load ammo to a more consistent and maximized performance than factory loads, which just tend to run light especially on some calibers. I like 10mm myself and find very few factory ammo that compares to loaded ammunition as most all factory loads are loaded light, closer to 40 S&W than the performance boast 10mm truly offers. I also like hard cast bullets when hunting or acting defensively against wildlife, over personal threats. Also like velocity over weight when it comes to personal defensive loads. Revolvers have one big benefit to autos, and that comes from a weak primer strike, while some autos allow rapid restrike, like the HK 2000 series, Glocks don’t and mean you have to rack a new round in; revolvers for better or worse with simply cycle around with a soft primer strike allowing discharge of the next round, hopefully it was a soft strike and not a hung primer as the round could simply discharge once it’s out of battery.

I enjoyed & appreciated this comparison, thank you. However I have to wonder how much power & velocity the .44 revolver loses in the cylinder to barrel gap verses none for a pistol. IMO: This in itself gives a pistol a slight edge over a revolver.

Interesting simple thought. I have gotten so tied up in minutia that I forget some people, especially people relatively new to guns might want to see the difference between .38, .38+P and .357 Mag, and i'm the guy to do it right. Old days on youtube you had people doing stuff like that but with +P ammo basically 5% more powerful than standard pressure, and that's not the way to do it. Done right you got 200 FPE for .38, maybe 300-350 FPE for +P and 600+ for .357 Mag.

@GunSam
@GunSam 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Not quite. I have ran some .45 ACP+P in my S&W Governor, but they do lose velocity in it. As far as a regular .45 ACP revolver, it's not really going to lose any velocity so terminal ballistics would be about the same. If I had to pick between a semi auto and revolver in .45 ACP, lets say a 1911 or Glock VS a S&W 625, personally i'm going with a revolver because .45 ACP+P has some recoil, and enough recoil to possibly cause "limp wrist" jams. If it were regular .45 ball ammo I could go either way on platform, but mentioning +P i'm definitely going with a revolver to keep reliability.

@GunSam
@GunSam Жыл бұрын
I am no animal expert. I don't think many handguns would put down a bull without a head shot. In the real world it's more about bullet design, how hot the cartridge is loaded and shot placement more than caliber. I have seen a video of a man putting down a moose that charged him with a 10mm or .40 caliber Glock. If it were me I would probably choose something like .40 S&W with full metal jacket ammo, as out of the box the .40 S&W has flat nose bullets that penetrate better than rounded nose .45 ACP, and the .40 S&W also does not recoil much so multiple shots and unlikelihood of malfunction would be a good thing. A .44 Mag would probably work, but I don't think you need that much gun for something like that. If it were me personally, I might try pepper spray first.

Now sure, it's well known that SAAMI is wrong about .45 Colt+P not being a thing, and that any modern double action revolver like a Ruger or S&W in .45 Colt can handle it easily.....but, it's in the realm of Buffalo Bore .38 Special+P at 500 ft lbs energy....same rules VS old guns. For me - .45 acp for 2 legged critters / .44 mag for 4 legged "tough" critters. I would NOT use .45 acp on black bear - the velocity is not enough in my opinion based on performance tests. A bear's chest cavity or skull is MUCH harder to pen than 1/4" MDF and some denim. Also for dangerous animals never use hollow points (saying this for inexperienced viewers) - a solid hard-cast flat nose or jacketed wad cutter 250+ grain in .44 mag would be my suggestion and is what I use. Why? Old woodsman advice that any .40 cal 200 gr going 1,000+ FPS will take any bear in the woods (I would add black bear but grizzly I would want more than that). A .45 acp might do it but wasn't designed for this when it was made. We all have choices - my .02 - good video.

The 37.4oz weight of that Model 69 isn't that conducive for actual thumpers in .44mag. Great revolver otherwise. What doesn't much occur to keyboard warriors and mall ninjas is the fact that unless you're throwing 2,200 fps rifle bullets at a distance, most all handgun bullets rely on 2 things to stop the life of a criminal or beast, that being penetration through vitals (appropriate momentum at terminal range), and hemorrhaging. Below 2,200 fps, all the talk of "big power" is really just emotional impression. Get enough penetration for vitals and tear up tissue, that's what does it. If the "big and slow" .452 bullet does those things, who cares about the perception of slow. It's still faster than any animal or human can get out of the way from. IV8888 did a test years ago with standard 45acp ball. At 440 yards from a carbine barrel, the thing still penetrated 2.25" of pine board. Cleanly.

You do great work and it shows as you now have 120 comments. I wonder about the 45 acp for bears and if it could be effective against a bear. However, with the 44 magnum having more mass in the rounds and still have 300 fps more which would equate to a couple hundred or so ft pounds, which is significant. Can you do a video on the 460 Rowland round as there is a lot of traffic on how that is more effective than the 10mm.
@GunSam
@GunSam 2 жыл бұрын
I'm doing some.45 Super soon. The .460 Rowland is more of a specialty that takes major modifications. As for .45 ACP on bears, while I'm not an expert, I do know an Underwood 255 gr hard cast is going to penetrate deep and have energy rivaling .357 Magnum. That says to me it will work.

I would agree that the XTP makes a better hunting bullet than for defense. That increased penetration would definitely be a good thing when you consider that hunting shots are going to be at longer ranges. Impact velocity will be lower, energy will be lower, likelihood of good expansion lower, etc. I am not overly impressed with any of the defensive options Hornady makes currently, but it does make them good choices for hunting.

I dont understand the whole "Denim Test" when it comes to hollow points and gel blocks. It would be better suited for a layer of cotton Hanes T-Shirts because you do NOT aim for the legs in a self defense situation. You aim for center mass. Now if you were interested in practicing leg shots, then add Denim in front of the block. But if you are practicing for center mass, it should be a T Shirt. Leave it to the FBI to confuse the country on ballistics testing. As if they arent doing enough damage already.

But with .44 Magnum revolvers we must also have to consider it's a revolver capable of firing so many different loads and not relying upon recoil springs. For instance, my .45 ACP Glock here in terms of exterior ballistics go, will only function when the cartridge is about 300 to 550 ft lbs energy. With a .44 Mag I can fire 100 ft lbs powder puff .44 Special loads or 1,000 ft lbs bear loads and they all function the same. Sure capacity is a good thing, but if we got to nit pick - average self defense against people is still 3 shots fired. Considering that and considering a warm .44 Special load is a great choice, I would say both are good options. Don't have to stick with .44 Magnum ammo to use a .44 Magnum revolver.
