Something that's sad is Big boy 4-0-0-5 had derailed a long time a go. The last words of, Front brakeman James Anderton: "He threw it right in front of us. The switch, they threw it right in front of us, they didn't give us a chance. I felt the engine rock. I don't know how many times it rocked. The next thing I knew I felt the steam hitting me in the face and I thought I was a goner. All I could think of was getting my hands over my face."

Causing 2,000 people to die, and millions in damages.

Breaking News: This just in, Big Boy 4014, and another UP engine behind Big Boy, collided with Amtrak’s California Zephyr in Arizona at 12:42 PM. At the time of the wreck, Big Boy was stationary at the time, while the Amtrak train was in excess of 50 MPH. The leading P42DCs, most of the coaches, and the engine behind Big Boy were considered either damaged beyond repair, or destroyed and scrapped. Big Boy suffered severe damage from Cowcatcher to the first tender. The driver and fireman were lucky to escape Big Boy, bailing off just 5 seconds before impact. Unfortunately, 17 people in the Amtrak train died, including the engineer, conductor, 2 on duty waiters, and 13 passengers. The cause was later found to be sabotage. An unknown person had switched the points without permission, causing the wreck. The police, and FBI are looking for the saboteur. Back to you Gustav.

I realize this is someone’s simulator generated scene. But at 58.6 MPH if the Amtrak engines did not climb over the top of the Big Boy they would have received catastrophic damage. Just the Big Boy with its tender can weigh as much as 1,208,000 lbs. That is probably more than the whole Amtrak train. The Amtrak coaches would probably be laying across the tracks like an accordion.

I’d say both P42DC locomotives AND the Amtrak baggage are total losses... 4014 is going to need another loooong restoration, anybody sitting in the Amtrak’s cab is dead on impact. In real life that heritage unit would’ve bent in half by like 35 degrees. The Amtrak engines would probably have both rear left corners shaved off from slamming into each other and how they’re placed. The baggage car would be nearly unrecognizable likely.

After spending 12 years in the shop, Bigboy #4014 is on his 4th run. Down the tracks a few miles is AmTrak #156, hauling passengers back home. As Bigboy #4014 rolls along, the engineer sees a limited clear signal, playing it safe, he decides to stop Bigboy #4014. as the AmTrak #156 approaches, the switch that would have let AmTrak #156 run straight trough malfunctions, lining the AmTrak #156 straight into Bigboy #4014's boiler, killing both engineers. The carnage of twisted metal is beyond belief, many cars are derailed, and many people are injured. Those that survived the crash will remember it for the rest of their lives.

I once joked about accidentally setting my house on fire as a result of trying to kill a mouse that was proving difficult to eliminate only to have t sit on the curb while the fire department rolled up. Sometime later, an attempt to kill it resulted in a small fire, the mouse escaped. Fortunately, no critical damage was done to my home. Another time, I jokingly said "zap, zap" on my lunch break, (we were remodeling a house) well about an hour later, I get bit with 120VAC! big boys are wonderful pieces of ingenuity & art.they dont belong on todays tracks.there are enough old junky engines left to pull freight cars.when you take museum treasures & put them to work.your just asking for more trouble than you can handle.perhaps if big boy is rebuilt,its owners will realize it belongs IN a museum.they almost lost an irreplacable work of art due to stupid decision to pull cars again.

CNN Latest news: A UP Excursion Train with the Big Boy collided with an Amtrak train in Cajon Pass CA. The lead engines got damaged. 5 people died, 8 got injured, and the engineer and conductor of Big Boy were severely injured.
