We chased west from Salt Lake City as far as Wells. Let's look at the schedule west from Elko to Roseville California! And preview a few shots from the West Desert in Utah.

The Union Pacific "Big Boy"! What a spectacular sight! The big fella never ceases to amaze me. I wish the other "Big Boys" could be restored.

Wish I still lived in Roseville and was able to see the BigBoy. Over the years I got to see UP 3985, the Challenger, as well as 4449, the SP daylight passenger engine and various other restored locomotives. I got to attend the original rail fair in Sacramento and rode 4449 from Sacramento to San Francisco, after which we were bussed back to Sac. On the portion of the trip on the commuter line from San Jose to SF the engineer opened up 4449 to around 80 mph and it was impressive.

Amazing So unique seeing it go across the salt flats. Ya know, it's year ago TODAY that I (and you) drove alongside that line, on towards Ely. Wow!

I was in this area during the last week of June 2024. I did not see a single train of any kind on the feather river route. West of Keddie Wye, they were doing track work that could be seen from the highway. I did stop at the wye and take a few pictures. There is not much room up there; maybe two yards between the guard rail and the downhill slope. A lot of trees in the way as well. There is a pull-off which can accommodate perhaps a dozen cars. It's going to be a mad house! According to Google maps, there are some roads that lead down to the base of the trestle. I did not go down there.

I videoed 3985 and 844 there in 91 as I recall. Toughest place I've ever tried to shoot video. Thousands of people on a winding two-lane and a train playing peek-a-boo.

Heads up, I did traveled on the 70 highway today and the highway still not good condition due to the winter storm we had in California. So I will try to make this simple. From keddie wye to entering the freeway to Oroville. There are total 6 flagger stops. The first one is 2 miles ish passed keddie wye. (West going to paradise/ oroville. That one is about 10+ minutes waiting, you do follow a pilot car about 7 minutes or so. Then flagger stop #2 is the same as flagger #1 but it’s a 10 minutes following the pilot car. Then flagger stop #3 is the worse one, 20+ minutes maybe 30 minutes wait, longest one to follow the pilot car and may stop in the middle of the follow for the equipment pass. Flagger stop #4 is first short wait, 5 minutes but no pilot vehicle to follow. Flagger stop #5 is light signal, 6.5 minutes duration if u are waiting on the red light. Flagger #6 is the shortest, less 1 minute wait. Then you are good for the rest of the trip. I decided not to go to the loop since there will be too many variable of me coming from Chico to pass Quincy, unknown if I’m gonna make it on time or not so I’m just gonna go pass flagger number 4, I would not go to flagger number three since it takes too long seems too busy to go through. The total trip it took me from the loop to former Oroville Depot was 2hrs and 25 minutes ish. That is me trying to speed. 😅

Let me tell you about a fateful adventure. We planned to evacuate Hurricane Beryl (in advance) ( that is we went on vacation to Colorado when Beryl made land fall. It wasn’t a strong storm (by definitions) but in reality it made a big mess. We still have power outages (sure glad we got a whole house generator last year. It automatically kicked in! Just a big mess to clean up. 😎

I think that the Union Pacific RR CEO has lost his marbles, running a Steam powered freight train up into the most beautiful river canyon in the country!! I think he has gone WOKE!! What do you think, Dale & Karyn, making Rail Fans climbing all over the canyon rockery just to get that special shot!!!
