50 years ago I worked on a 40 foot commercial fishing boat. We would fish for salmon during the spring. It was all day tripping and some days the water would be like glass. In the summer months we would go out two weeks at a time in warmer water to fish fo albacore. In the winter we would fish for Dungeness crabs. The weather was like this half of the time. If you're a dedicated fisherman this is nothing. Fishing for crab was great. The skipper was a football fan. On sundays we would run a short string of pots to get home in time to watch football. I would bring home a burlap bag half full of crabs and my mother would cook them all day. Fresh crab all day, YUM ! I was17 years old then and we fished out of Eureka California harbor. What a wonderful place to grow up. Thanks for letting me share these memories. Jerry

From what I saw the Captains and their boats handled it very well. A bit of a rough ride for a few minutes to get in some good fishing is worth it.

@teresaharris-travelbybooks55642 жыл бұрын
I've been watching you for awhile but this is seriously good stuff. The video quality of the ocean is amazing. You couldn't pay me to be on one of those boats. A party boat's got no business being out there. I went on a party boat, out of Marina Jack, with the Flying Fish Fleet and it looked like a good day, till we got out of the harbor. We couldn't stand up well enough to fish. People were throwing up in the bait buckets, into beer cartons, etc. I was soaked, completely soaked. The money in my wallet was soaked. My camera was ruined. And the crew asked for a tip.

@UnApologeticPatriot2 жыл бұрын
I used to work on a charter boat as a deckhand and then eventually as a Captain. We would normally warn our customers that it's 'nautical' weather out there. Then we'd take them 1 mile offshore and let them know that this is the point of no return. If they said go for it and 15 minutes later, changed their minds, they lost their money. We gave enough chances.

ALFRED. Hello. Once even my wife decided to see what it was like, it was NOT BAD going, or returning, this was a party boat. MISS BELNAR I think it was now this is an ALUMINIUM BOAT 120 FEET X over 20 feet beam, it was SO WROUGHT,FISHING, THAT 30 MINS too many were hitting the rails ,lots puking,SO THEY CALLED IT A DAY & gave us return trips , My wife could NOT GET OVER HOW ROUGH IT WAS,,SOMEONE NEEDED STICHES TO HIS HEAD, . this was in the early 70s ONCE 2 of us went on an overnighted to the HUDSON CANYION, for tile fish, 600 feet down, since we booked late we had hand reels. NOT electric reels, we both got 1 fish each, you DONT EVEN KNOW YOU HAVE A FISH,, that was an adventure,out of BRIELLE NJ, on the JAMAICA 2 that buddy is now gone , that was in late 70 s, stay well 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Despite the terrified commentary, the old Hatteras "Sea Cross II" did pretty well - even when rolling in beam seas - because Jack Hargrave designed boats to take the slop, and it was built in a time when 'heavy' was not thought of as 'bad'. Yes - 'heavy' won't get you 40+ knots at cruise, but it will get you a reasonable roll period and keep everyone from getting the teeth knocked outta their skulls.

I worked for a port authority decades ago in Australia. Honestly, I don't think these conditions are that challenging for a boat over 35 foot. The bigger question is what's happening with barometric pressure. If there's been a low around for more than 12 hours, then the bite will be off. However as the pressure is falling with incoming bad weather, the bite can be really hot. Anyone whose been fishing smartly for a few years should know why.

Those Captains weren't appreciating being on that water-and their costumers won't be very soon. Can't talk someone that had plans for 6-10 months on what day they were going fishing, into understanding how bad it's going to be.
