Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis is a subspecies of the great panda (Latin Ailuropoda melanoleuca). The population was first discovered in 1960, but it was isolated as an independent subspecies only in 2005.
Description
It lives at altitudes of 1300-3000 m above sea level in the Qinling Mountains in western China, after which the animals got their name. It differs from the nominative subspecies in smaller sizes, brown and light brown fur color (instead of black and white in the nominative subspecies) on dark areas of the body.
According to some scientists, these animals owe their coloring to genetic mutations, as well as to the peculiarities of the diet in natural habitat.
On August 30, 1989, a panda of this subspecies was captured for the first time for the Xi'an Zoo. Subsequently, the captured female was crossed with a male of the nominative subspecies. The female gave birth to three cubs, who died shortly after birth. The female herself, named Dan-Dan, died in 2000.
At the moment, only one individual of this subspecies is kept in captivity. The male panda, whose name is Qizai, is in a research center located in the Chinese province of Shaanxi.
There are various data on the population size of this subspecies, according to experts, now no more than 300 individuals live in natural conditions.
