My mom was from Finland (the Swedish speaking area on the west coast) and they used the steam juicers for Lingonberry juice (a sort of cranberry) and also for sea buckthorn. Love those juicers - found two of them at garage sales here (there is a nice size Scandinavian community down in the lower mainland) so us kids didn't fight over who got Mom's juicer.

sea buckthorn is one of the reachest in vitamin c foods. vitamin C is mostly destroyed by the heat of the juicer. I freeze the berries and use them in smoothies in winter, seeds and all. the berries are also rich in omega 3,6,7 and 9, but only as a whole food! You isolate the nutrients by juicing it.

I’ll try to make this a long story short. At least 25 years ago when my husband worked as a photojournalist at our local CBS station, the anchor and friend of his told him about a guy he met (I think) from New Jersey who had this amazing juicer thing. It was called Mehu Liisa and was named after his daughter, Liisa. I ordered one and my juicing and jelly-making was transformed. I started with crab apples and it made the best crab apple jelly ever. We have a local Concord grape pick your own place and picking starts on September 20. That’s what I’ll be juicing. And while we’re not big juice drinkers either, we make the exception for grape juice. Fun video as always!! ❤️

I love my steam juicer! One of our favorite apple- related treats is to make a spiced apple juice that we warm up as a cider substitute (using sweeter apples). I put a few cinnamon sticks and a tea ball strainer with some whole cloves in the middle portion where the juice collects. Then I just water bath it in quart jars. This is a great way to use up all of the cores and peels that I take off when making my applesauce. I collect them and steam them. It's a fantastic byproduct, especially on cold winter days. It also makes a lovely gift.

I rarely can a lot anymore. It's just me now and I moved to a very tiny house ❤. 200 sq ft! And my yard along with my patio is small too. Never really measured it; but I know it can fit 3 SUV's (side by side lol). I do raised beds, containers and hanging baskets for my garden. For winter growing I made arched "greenhouse covers" and some areas I use old windows that I have hinged to the raised beds. I do can pickles, jams, a bit of relish and sauerkraut.

I used to be a store-bought-can-of-green-beans person but now I fry up some cut up bacon and sliced onion, add in the green beans to heat them up and add a little black pepper and a splash (maybe 1/2 tsp for a quart) of lemon juice. They are so good! If you make a large batch in a crock pot, cook the bacon first, drain it and add everything else plus some butter and cook on low for about 4 hours.

SEABUCKTHORN HARVESTING - Rob Avis from Verge Permaculture in Alberta has a great way to harvest Seabuckthorn. If you have an old empty deep freeze, trim the branches with the berries, set them in the deep freeze to freeze. Then bang the branches on the inside of the deep freeze and all berries and leaves fall off. Separate them and continue to keep the berries frozen in bags or whatever. The leaves make a great tea too.

I also just got a steam juicer! It didn't come with an instruction manual, though. 😞(I do like a good manual) I filled the top to the brim and then added more apples in when the first bit cooked down. It did seem a bit watered down to me but I'm excited to try other things. I've only done apples so far. I then put the "used" apples through my food mill and made applesauce. I was worried that it wouldn't taste very flavorful but it was just fine. Your sea buckthorn juice is BEAUTIFUL!

The apple juice can also be used as a marinade for pork products. It works especially well if you do pork chops. I always add a pinch of curry powder to add an earthy component. The juice caramelizes to seal the chops and prevents then from getting dry. The juice can also be heated with spices to create a nice warm drink in the winter. I have also purchased a steam juicer. Glad to see another canning video. It is always great to more options for recipes to can. Thanks for the video.

I absolutely love my steam juicer. Picked it up about 15 years ago when I saw it in an Amish dry goods store when down in PA. Have used it for our wild Concord grapes, apples, wild beach plums, wild beach rose hips, raspberries, blueberries and just a few weeks ago juiced several pounds of cranberries that I wanted to get out of my freezer. I have heard of people using it to make chicken stock, but I have never tried that. Have loaned it out to friends as well because as you said it is such a labor saver when making jelly. I am fascinated by the new home freeze driers. What a great tool for preserving! In an earlier season of life I definitely would have saved tor one of those. I also love the electric pressure canning and am considering saving for that investment.

About the seabucktorn, my mum used to do kissel of them at one point quite often. It's really easy. Just add berries or juice (depending if you want some texture), some water, potato flour, and sugar into the pot and stir them until it's thickend a bit. I like it just by itself but you can put it with porridge or something like that too.🤔 Also at least here in Finland there's a lot of different kinds of products out of seabucktorn (and aronia berries too) juices is one but also like "spiced" honey and one that I like to use a lot: seabucktorn groats/powder. You can use it in everything in smoothies, teas, baking, or on top of yogurt and so on. I imagine that you could use aronias similarly.. :3 And if the juice is too strong by itself, try you could try to mix it with some other juice or honey and water, and you'd get your own little health mocktail.✨️ Just random fun facts: In Finnish, we call seabucktorn "tyrni", and the berries are called "tyrnimarjat". They are pretty successful in colder climates so they are quite common in here too. 💖

Hi! About picking seabuckthorn, there is a trick makes it soooo easy😄... You pick whole branches (it grows back next year) put them in an old sheet and in the freezer over night. The next day you take the whole package and put it on a large table. Open it up and let the sheet stay as a table protector. Pick up the branch and shake it. For the berries that wount come of, hit the branch with a wooden spoon and poke of the most stubborn with fork. My Mom makes alot of apple juice this time of the year. She puts cinnamon as spice in them and in the fall/winter we drink it as a mulled cider, sometimes with more spices and sometimes as it is. Bottles with apple juice and a small back of spices is great gifts for friends and neighbours at christmas, its fun, doesn´t tribute to cluttering up anyones home and it´s not expensive either.

I noticed you said quarts don't fit in your electric pressure canner (water bath method). Mine fit fine. There is a tiny bit of pressure inside when you can in that machine. ALL my quarts have sealed fine with waterbath. It's just a little messy because it'll dribble water out the top. So I put a washcloth over both handles to catch the spills.
