Big Changes to the CompTIA Security+ Certification SY0-601 to SY0-701

For people wondering if you can still take the 601 test in November when they release the 701 version. I had the same question. I contacted Comptia directly and they told me we have until July 2024 to take the 601 version then they’re going to retire that version of the test. I’m currently studying for the 601 version as well.

Yeah same thought. I read somewhere there is a grace period of 5 months for 601 after 701 will release so you can still take the 601 until next year April.

​@wanchokoy so when this just happened with the A+ I am fairly sure that grace period comes down to purchases. When you buy a voucher you get 6 months to use it. So if you buy a 601 voucher on October 31st, you have 6 months to take the 601. But you cannot buy a 601 voucher after November 1st.

I have asked many people and the consensus seems to be hurry and take Security+ 601 before November changes to 701 so you have the three year cert but not the difficulty. I feel like that's not correct but I don't know as much as the people saying otherwise. Does the certificate specify which version? Was curious your opinion.

I wouldn't worry about the version of the exam. The core concepts will still remain the same in both versions. If you're starting your studies now, then it makes sense to go with the 601 version. I hope this helps!

I just passed the 601 and my cert does not specify the version. I chose to take the 601 because I already had materials for it, and there were not 701 practice tests available so it seemed prudent to go with the known quantity. Since you have to maintain the cert every 3 years your knowledge will remain current enough for CompTIA's standards, and employers do not care what test version you took, only that your cert is active.

Your Security+ will be valid for your entire career. You simply have to pay the membership fee to CompTIA and complete 50 continuing education credits every three years.

You should be able to renew your Security+ by submitting Continuing Education Units (CEUs). You will need 50 CEUs to renew Security+.

When you receive your Security+ certification, it doesn't even show the number on it. It just says you are certified in Security+. It will not matter to anyone you had to provide that cert to (i.e. employers) what number test you took.

Great question! If you certify with the 601 version, you can maintain your Security+ certification throughout your career. So, you won't need to re-certify on the 701 version.

Think of yourself as a computer, and I see the 06 and the 08. I'm going with the new one. It's gonna out last 07. You can study 07 til you upgrade to 08. About money or retention. Some companies will stick with a certain model. But the industry grows every 5 months. Their working on the 9 and 10, 8 is already for 2024

that's a fine way to go about it, but people may have materials for the 601 that they've had for a minute. if the 701 is in fact more difficult and the 601 goes until 7/24, why not try to pass the 601 with the materials you have vs buying all new materials? Darrill Gibson's Security+ book is supposed to be top tier. He recently released an updated 701 version but the 601 is still readily available too.

i took the test twice, and the second time (the one i passed) i think there was only one question regarding ports, and the sources i used is i printed out the objectives from CompTIA, put it in a binder and take notes on the definitions i didnt know, i used professor messors videos because they go in order of the CompTIA objectives, and then i googled the rest that i didnt understand. Also the CompTIA security + app has practice questions and tests for free and they are exactly formatted like the sec+ exam itself which was very helpful.@@nathanelmeier3972

There's really no big change. The just split the modules so instead of having fewer modules, it has been broken down into more modules which is more targeted. Thhis guy is just an alarmist. Exam objectives are the same
