Here’s a breakdown of my Craftsman USA tool haul from the Van Buren Drive-in / Swap Meet… One of my favorite places to find vintage Craftsman tools. Which do you prefer for vintage tools? Garage sales, or swap meets? Let me know in the comments below.
This video is in 4K resolution, which means get off your phone and watch it in full hi-rez glory on your big TV. 4K TVs are cheap now, and totally worth it. Also be sure to stream it on a capable device, like the Ruku Ultra or Apple TV 4K. Helpful links below.

Dave, those ratcheting wrenches aren't that old. The one marked "2" was made in 1992, and the one marked "7" was made in 2007. The one marked "8" was made in 1998. As I stated on your other video, Kastar/A&E Tool made these for Sears, and since they also make them for Snap On, they use SO's dating system markings for them. The 1987 patent date is when A&E filed for it, not when the wrench was actually made. I have a couple of sets of those offset ratcheting wrenches, I still have them new in the package from probably 2004 or 2005.

That is the dumbest numbering system I've ever seen. Very strange. Any ways, thanks for the insight.

@@davidguido I believe that's because Snap On is probably their biggest customer for them, Sears was probably a close second. They were made by someone else before A&E. I have some of the older ones, they were the "I" in a circle tools.

@@davidguido Snap On was probably their biggest customer next to Sears. Parker Manufacturing (I Circle code) made the older ones for Sears before A&E/Kastar started making them. That would have been prior to 1985-1986, which makes sense since A&E filed for a patent around 1987.

Do you have a resource that has all of these number codes? I can't figure out the pattern on this one.

Yes, just Google, "Snap On Date Code Chart" and you will get several hits. That will show you what each code translates to as far as year of manufacture.

The #41586 "stubby flat" is still sold today. I bought some about a year ago (NOS USA made) at Ace, later production WF made. I can't tell if your tool has an "H" or an "M" stamp (you spun it a little too fast and it's a bad angle for me to see), but H should be 1993 and M should be 1998. That puts things in line when WF stopped the hot forging process (units that were hot forged say "Forged" on the handle) according to what a veteran employee there told me. I thought I saw Y on the stubby Phillips, that puts that at about 2005 era.

That's an "M" on the stubby flat, so 1998, and a "Y" on the stubby phillips, so 2005. Thanks again for the insights!

Which makes sense with what WF said because I found an M code #41587 in my collection yesterday and it is not forged. So we have evidence that 1998 is when they stopped hot forging.

Dave I just discovered you tonight and have watched many of your videos. All are excellent. A few questions if you don’t mind. What techniques do you use to clean the tools? Are you also a fan of the older Craftsman tool boxes? Can you provide the sites that you discuss that provide you much of the information you share? I am a relatively new Craftsman collector and I really enjoyed your videos, your signature phrases, and just your true fondness for the tools.

Hey Frank, thank you for the thoughtful words. That really made my day! For cleaning, I rely solely on a wire wheel on my bench grinder, and sometimes I buff out scratches. But I typically like my old tools to have some patina, that way I won't hesitate to use them when I need them. I love the old toolboxes, but don't have that much room to collect them. Maybe I will down the road. For the details, I rely heavily on alloy-artifacts.org, sometimes garagejournal.com, and my digital collection of Craftsman (Sears) catalogs. I also did a pretty extensive logo study last year and recreated each logo in vector format. That's what you see sometimes when I talk about the dates. Don't hesitate to ask more questions... I'll talk about these as long as someone's willing to listen! :) Thanks again, and happy collecting!
