I’m probably stepping on a rake but wanted to say, the purpose of a review is to help people know what it’s like to play a game so they can decide for themselves if they want to purchase. Some classic JRPGs have been remade one to one, while others have been updated with more modern conveniences. For old schoolers like us who thrive on the grind, the lack of modernity can be ok. But for someone who doesn’t jive with that or is looking to find an entry point into the genre or a franchise they’re not familiar with, maybe less so I think that’s ultimately the problem with slapping a number score on a review because once that’s there, everyone stops hearing whatever else is said - especially in a world where an 8/10 is basically the new 6/10 and anything less than 9s and 10s across the board is used as ammunition in online shouting contests Much love and respect, I myself am a grindy turn based classic JRPG fan so I’m not here spreading hate. I just got home with my own copy of the game and it’s been one of my top 3 anticipated games of this year alongside Rebirth and Metaphor

@kqm201014 сағат бұрын
Exactly. This person came at it from a different lens and gave their opinion. All because they disagree with some groups or their isn’t what people assumed doesn’t negate what they said. This game could be the first DQ game someone would play and knowing the encounter rate could be too high is kinda important. Gamers are getting a lil too sensitive over game reviews. If you like a game then buy it. It’s as simple as that. No need to react to every review that’s different from the rest.

I never thought I'd come across such a perfect response but here it is. I was going to say something similar but you've hit the nail on the head. Reviews are personal criticism and instead of people reading or listening to the words of the review they focus on the scores instead and it's lazy.
@ToddMa094 сағат бұрын
Agree 100%. This is why people need to be less hung up on the score itself and actually watch/read what is said about the game in the reviews. That way you can see if the "negatives" called out by the reviewer are things that bother you or not and inversely if the "positives" are things that you care about too. Scores can be an indicator of a games quality, but I usually only put any weight behind them if they are coming from a reviewer who I have followed long enough to know if their taste in games is similar to my own.

I think the reviews are what they are. What changed is the reviewers doing the reviews. People, who played the originals, will remember the grind, but also remember how snappy the grind is. Thing is, to those DQ fans, they often seek it. Part of seeking it is that what others call “the grind” DQ vets see it as playing an encounter roulette. It’s highly addictive. There is nothing like the feeling of trying to get encounters for a chance to land a metal slime or a Gold man. When you run into those, it’s like you hit a minor lottery. The rush of trying to get the amazing gains those encounters give you. Especially with metal slimes because they are more elusive and have a chance to rob you of their best treasures if they run before you take them down. Gold man, is more like a guaranteed awesome find as long as you win. (Which, if you’re gold man hunting, you’ll probably win after you find them)

When I saw the new battle sprites from behind I thought they made it where the characters had attack animations, similar to the newer games in the series. It turns out that it shows the backside of the characters for no reason and just goes into the usual first person w/ effects after selecting your battle options. The battle system wasn't revamped and the auto battle grind doesnt feel rewarding. For a $40 definitive edition this would be fine for players that loved the old games but they touted this and are selling it as a full on remake.

There are some reviewers who don't know how to properly weigh their criticisms to games, this is one such case (sounds like she described an 8.5/10) That IGN Mario & Luigi Brothership review was another (guy described a 7/10). As for the low sales for that latter game I think a potential reason is the Japanese crowd is saving up for Dragon Quest 3 HD2D, DQ is very big in Japan and probably more of a priority imo

In your mind, not in his. That's the problem with focusing on the review scores and not the reasoning behind the score. It's also why scores might be pointless (pun intended) and we might all be better served going off of more thorough in depth reviews.
@reeseseater1217 сағат бұрын
@@Maxrepfitgm so I am basing it off of what was said in the review. The performance isn't nearly as bad as they made it out, the amount of dialogue seems kinda normal for a Mario RPG, the story is fine and the series has never had super deep or thought provoking stories before but the one it does tell serves the purpose of the game (so the last two, being things the series has always had is weird to complain about without saying that) and I've always hated when people complain about timed side quests, I think that's just a stupid complaint. Sometimes side quests won't make sense at some point in the story and this game makes it very clear when a side quest has a time limit, it's not gonna screw you over and none of them take you too far out of the game itself. All the complaints were minor or weird things to complain about. A 5/10 is saved for a bad game, not a good game with minor annoyances

I don't see the problem with grinding either if you get stuck on a boss level up I learned that lesson when I was a kid. Granted it helps to know where the best spots to do it are but it's usually not difficult to tell which monsters give out a ton of exp and money. People are just so damn impatient that slowing down and taking a break is a crime to them. And the benefit to grinding is that doing it long enough will make it so you can get through alot more of the game without getting stuck.

Like with everything else, its just small but loud minority of people on the internet who complain about everything representing the "controversy". Not everyone has to love this game but man can we get to a point where if you don't like a game you can just not play it instead of trying convince people that do like it that they shouldn't? Its an annoying aspect of the online gaming community as a whole. Focus on what you like rather than what you don't and all your lives will improve dramatically. I guarantee it.

i think it's fine to have differing opinions. this is not that outrageous. there are plenty wrong with game journalist, but this one is not it. i think people need to realize, the value of a media you consume doesn't change according to it's metascore. personally i rate this game 3/10 thanks to the censorship and the unavailability of choice to be a boy or a girl lol. jk, i played it and have fun with it nontheless.

🙄 the best response is actually "who cares" A review that isn't what you wanted doesn't hurt you. Stop caring Side note, asking a modern game to have qol is not a big ask. A remake of a game is still a remake. Re4 remake still updated the game to improve it for modern audiences. Asking a game with notoriously terrible encounter rate to let you tone it down isn't crazy.

I made my hero character experienced enough Player. When I went to the church ⛪ in the hero home town. To find out how much experience I need to level up my hero. The church said you are experienced enough no numbers. Now my other party members I can see their experience numbers for a level up. Plus my hero gain levels more faster than my other party members. The reason why I'm in no hurry to upgrade to the ps5 pro console. The Ps5 pro console is too expensive. The reason for all this has to do with the Goddess questions in the beginning of the game.

The only problem is the censorship that ruin the game as well very poor translations. Especially for newcomers who can’t tell the difference between the 2 hero you choose because the dev were forced to label as body type A or B when it was male or female which will confuse some when trying to equip female armor only. Thats the only issues that would enrage hardcore DQ and insult of Toriyama work from the crazy dei employees consultants and the esb rating company that now just a mafia bully that love to censored stuff to attack customers for their sick pleasure. I wanted to be pure as the old day when it was perfected translations and uncensored that wasn’t even that adultery at all. But such a bad decision of square enix and have to see the sale level on that. For Mario and Luigi Brothership. Its only first week, just give it the month as people are going to pick it up probably near end of month and next for black friday and Christmas sales as most likely people are saving money from these inflation time.

@nightwish14537 сағат бұрын
guess one minor gripe is the encounter rate. random encounters is fine though you have different games that vary how many battles happen, the remake is slightly above average to how i would think it's acceptable (not bad mind you and I will go through it fine) but it's not like say persona 1 where the random encounters is so wack to the point a single step leads to another battle, in the ps1 west ver they trimmed the encounter rate down not because it was an attempt to make it easy but to make it less of a drag as p1 fights have a lot of slow animations that can't be sped up
