M.S. Fayia, aka "Big Fayia."
In 1965, the RSLAF (the Royal Sierra Leone Armed Forces, later the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces when the republic was proclaimed in 1971) persuaded Mustapha Sahr Fayia to join the army and its regimental band in 1965; he agreed only if they allowed him to form a dance band. Before that he had served 6 years as a corrections officer in the Prisons Department, and 1 year as bandleader of Delco Mines' "Iron Ore Jazz."
The army hardly kept its promise, shuttling him into the regimental band to play saxophone, and then sending him to England to study classical music. While in the army he formed and recorded under the name "Big Fayia and his Invisible Five." (Some recordings were done as "Big Fayia & his Invisible Four.") He retired from the army in 1985.
