You can cover the glass with something like paper on the side you want the ants to build. then you remove the paper whenever you want to take a look into their chambers. at least that worked for AntsCanada with some ants who build their nest in leafes over the earth. no clue if it would be good for earth ants lol i dont even own ants it just another thing i learned here :D great channels! I was always interested in ants but books are boring so you guys make me learn about ants in an interesting way thanks for that!

AntsCanada said feeding your ants insect from the garden is risky cause they can have bacterias/pesticides and shrooms (sry dont know right word) but I find it more natural and I like how you keep it morr natural this way :)

I have an idea. I will get a ten gallon tank. Then, I will make borders all around about 1 inch away from the glass. In the inside of the borders, I'll add grout, plaster, cement, or something like that. Then, the rest soil. So, they can naturally dig, as well as be seen. Seems like a good idea?
@mdrogun9 жыл бұрын
You should coat the sides with Fluon so it would be impossible for any ants to get out. Then you should put the tank outside for a day or two. It would be cool to see what falls in the tank and how the ants react to it.

Hey mate, I live in Melton ( west melbourne) and been trying to catch a queen for a little while now every morning when i go for a walk. However i must be blind as i cant seem to find any just lots of workers. Any suggestions or perhaps a short video on catching one :D
@JordanDeanFilms9 жыл бұрын
+MorphiusX Hi there, most often ant colonies undergo their nuptial flights in warm, humid weather. I find the day after a heavy rainstorm is the best time to go looking for queens. Search along side walks, most queens are dark in colour so they will stand out and be easier to spot there. Look for an ant which has a large gaster (back section) and walks in a zig-zag pattern. Watch a little bit of this footage of a queen ant and you'll know what I mean kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2O6o5SZhd50adU Many ant species will be undergoing their nuptial flights for at least another 3-4 months or so. During the winter months it will be hard to find any queens. Hope this helps and good luck!
@mdrogun9 жыл бұрын
+MorphiusX Just don't rush it. You get better and better at finding queens it just takes time. I used to dream of finding a queen. last season I found over 100. You will just find them where you never expect to. I was going pee in july and looked at my window and there was a queen on it! My advice would be to go to different areas and keep your eyes open at all times.

I feel like starting a colony and get a big tank but thin like when they make a colony you see all of them building it and put the dirt or sand and let them build it that would be awesome to me.
@reactiegever19867 жыл бұрын
Just A Bit i am a bit late, but what you could do is get a small tank, like 30-20-20 cm. Then you put in a cardboard box of 29-19-10 cm in. The box will esentially force the ants to dig close to the glass.

Did you use soil for the ground in the terrarium? Also can use sand? I am new to raising ant colonies :)
@JordanDeanFilms8 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can use sand and/or soil if you'd like. The ants will do fine in there. I wanted to grow succulents in my terrarium so, no, I didn't use soil myself. I'll take you through my method. First I put a layer of small rocks down for drainage, then a layer of charcoal for purification, then some potting mix, specialised for growing cacti and succulents and finally a layer of red sand for esthetic value.

how do you water a naturalistic setup? im making one and i thought i would just make the dirt on and angle and water the highest point and let it run down. what do you suggest?
@JordanDeanFilms8 жыл бұрын
Just pour in some water every now and then. Try to pour slowly to prevent collapsing their tunnels and chambers. Also, try to create a moisture gradient, so water one-half of the substrate and keep the other half dry.

what type of camera do you use to record this close ups of ants as i would love to record my ants but not sure what type of camera to use
@JordanDeanFilms7 жыл бұрын
For this video, I used an Olympus SZ-14 which has a macro setting and records standard HD. Not a bad camera, but I've since upgraded to a full HD Canon EOS 1300 D with an EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro Lense. I've used for the past couple of videos.
