They definitely are starving. Maybe deworm and flea treat them? I realize you may already be gone. Goat dewormer is the same as dog, but much cheaper per pond. Heartworm can be treated with Ivor Mictin (Sp?) for pennies per dog. Read the labels and do the per-pound dosage.

God bless you for feeding these helpless dogs. I just cannot wrap my head around why with ppl in the boat yard will not help these babies, they could feed them daily or at least every couple of days!! It does not cost much for food or scraps. The shape they are in is beyond sad. IMHO, that boat yard can do better, instead of watching them suffer the pain of hunger daily.

I have a Pearson 30 Wanderer with the same shallow draft/centerboard design. Although a tough pull, are doing a great job addressing the water intrusion issues discovered. The time an effort put in now doing a thorough repair will pay off in the years to come. Also, I was so pleased to see you caring for those dogs who clearly are in need. Best to ya.

The cavaties are part of the original build, it's just water ingress through fiberglass over decades. Not a structural problem but I think drying it all out and repairing is the correct approach. The work has brought you a comprehensive insight to the hull and keel.

A couple of comments: I previously posted that I didn't want to see another dog on your boat. In my view, small boats are not suitable places for pets, especially sailboats. Having said that, my beliefs are not necessarily your beliefs, and it is your life, your boat. I don't have to watch, but more importantly, the reason for this comment is to say to Brandy: "Your love of animals, particularly dogs, in this case, is wonderful and an inspiration. Here you are showing compassion for those wandering, abandoned dogs and feeding them, despite you and Beau being under incredible pressure with so much on your minds, not least financial pressure involved in fixing an old boat. As a fellow lover of animals, thank you. Any dog on your boat will be well loved. I am no sailor or expert on sailboats; however, as I am watching the innards of your boat, I can't help thinking, is it worth it to fix it. You have already had an incredible scare out on the ocean, saved by those fishermen. Your boat looks very old and in overall seriously poor condition. Looks as if it had not been maintained before you bought it. I see all the money going into it as ending up as sunk costs. Have you thought about just walking away with a new goal to raise the money to purchase a much better and seaworthy boat. I am not in a position to help right now (my own sad tale), but I bet many of your followers are -- just for a leg up for a new boat + innovation projects / jobs to raise money. Time out goes very fast -- flies in fact. You could even document your journey.

I entered the yard on 10 September for a 3 week bottom job and it is now 22 November. Lots of blister and water intrusion which required lots of grinding. A good thing to do is a cold rinse periodically and a cold shower. The fiberglass gets into your pores and that is what is bothersome. You appear to be doing a good job and like myself you will so freaking happy when you are done. My boat went in looking less than desirable and now she is amazing.

Even at this late date, were you to spring for a survey, you would learn a lot of critical information regarding repairs. You're fortunate that the ballast is lead since iron would have rusted, swelled and exploded the fiberglass. Also, rather than grinding, where possible, use a wide fishtail woodworking gouge to remove damaged glass.
@IrishPirateMusic3 жыл бұрын
Grinding down that keel is akin to an archeological dig; discovering the past work and band-aids from previous owners and slowly piecing together the puzzle of its history. Disheartening at first I'm sure, but the peace of mind is worth the effort. and thanks for tending to those pups.

When you pour a "full can" of fluid Brandy, pour it with the spout at the TOP, and it won't "slosh out." (Allows air into the can) when the can is about 1/2 empty, you can turn it over, and pour with spout on bottom, and not get sloshing. Many times it might not matter, but in your case maybe you didn't want it splashing away there near the top finished areas. (Of course its alchohol and will evaporate quickly so it doesn't matter so much..... but some chemicals are stinky and don't go away easily.)
@robertlaird67463 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about your situation and would like to chime in if I can. My thought would be to fix your boat on the cheep and look for another one and then sell yours. I'd try to get a catamaran if you can because of more interior and exterior room. When you get it, go all electric if you can on everything except the dinghy outboard.

Interesting, I own a 77 Pearson 365 ketch, no CB but encapsulated keel You are right about the green glass, thats polyester they used a lot for tabbing, mostly by now that would be failing. Ive never seen this in these keels before. These boats are so old at the time they were built there was no way to work out how thick hulls should be, so they made them similar to a timber boat schedule. So they are kinda overbuilt by a lot to todays standards. You probably took more glass out than I might but I can see you wanted to neutralise the goop. As long as you can restore the hull shape and thickness in fresh glass, especially with epoxy, and keep a decent 12:1 taper around it, it should be better than new, so you got that going for you. I cant imagine there is a risk of delamination except where there are previous repairs which do look kinda suspect. If you have a keel stepped mast you might want to look at that fitting which is probably rusted out. They put bolts through that into the hull, if those threads are gone that would be a conduit for water from the bilge into the keel. I'll be back to see how you are going, youve got some unfun work in front of you.
