They do look like pretty good pens as that wide refill compatibility is impressive. I will say not having knurling on the section you hold while writing is a total deal breaker for me though. I live in Texas and it's hot and humid. Smooth or mostly smooth sides on a metal pen is incredibly hard to write with once you hand starts getting a little sweaty. I currently use a Retro 1951 Hex-O-Matic and it has fantastic knurling and takes a really nice Itoya AquaRoller Gel Pen refill that I enjoy.

It’s a brilliant idea, and one that really makes a lot of sense: let the pen companies worry about the ink and refills. I use the Ti Arto with my favorite Pilot V5 refill and it’s a real pleasure. Thanks Dave!

I have two of their pen designs obtained via kickstarter, the clicky and the updated first design. I like both as they feel lightweight and great in the hand, but somehow I prefer the Ti Pro because the clicky has stained my pocket as sometimes I forget to do the click and the exposed tip rubs against the fabric.

I have the Ti Arto. The thing that sold me was the versatility in what refills it can take. It would seem no matter where you are in the world, a store would have the refill that would fit the pen. Love the collet design. I hyper-extended the collet once and thought I fudged it up for good. I tinkered around with it (before I saw this video) and got it to work again. The secret for me was, not to force anything and make the issue worse. Great video .

How does this pen address the following two factors: a) adjust how much tip sticks out and b) how tight the chuck/collet clutches? It seems like if you want the collet to clutch you have to necessarily push out the pen tip until it catches. So you're stuck between a wiggly tip that doesn't stick out as much or a firm tip, but extended to the max based on the refill dimension. Is this correct or is there a way to secure a specific length tip AND have the collet chuck clamp securely at that location so there is no wiggle?
@BeastMadeReviews
@BeastMadeReviews 3 жыл бұрын
You adjust how long the tip is when you put in the refill before tightening the collet. Once you adjust it, it's a tight fit with zero wiggle.

So, what was Bigidesign's solution about the overextension? I don't think you shared that in the video.
@BeastMadeReviews
@BeastMadeReviews 2 жыл бұрын
They actually have a video about it on their website, but they said to take a rubber bad and twist it further until it clicks, resetting the collet. By now they probably have already implemented their new collet design.

Hello I was wondering if you would try a sharpie s gel refill in the pen to see if it would fit? I work in a pharmacy and the s gel is the only refill I’ve found that doesn’t smear on prescriptions. I’ve been looking for a refillable pen that will work with this refill but there doesn’t seem to be one that I could find. If you could see if it works in either of these pens I’d be super grateful. Thanks a lot

I haven't tried it, since I don't have one on-hand, but I'm positive they would fit. The pens from Big Idea Design are great at adapting to any refill--especially the capped pens.

Hi, really enjoyed the review. How's the texture of surface of the raw Ti version? Does it have the characteristic roughness of titanium which is very useful for giving some proper friction with your fingers?

there's a little bit of texture to it. If you're familiar with stonewashed steel, I would say it's similar

The Arto EDC is great for the ability to use refills but the orings make it hard to screw together. It needs a different design similar to the SCHON DSGN V2 or Pocket 6 with an internal oring that seats easier. I have asked the company multiple times if you can remove the orings because its too hard to screw together but it doesn't look like they even paid attention to my request because they told me they make it smoother - in fact the orings make it significantly more difficult than without. The Click EDC and its variants have more tip wobble than any decent plastic pen like the Uni Ball 307 - unacceptable in comparison to pens that cost $2-3. They need to redesign the collet or give you a way to tighten it so its more usable with many tip sizes. Machined pens are cool, but the industry has not been around as long as the plastic pen industry. They have some catching up to do in my opinion.

Thank you for posting this video. Really do like those pens. Question: What is the name of the leather journal you have in the video?
@BeastMadeReviews
@BeastMadeReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That's the leather journal from Allegory Goods--HIGHLY recommend it! It comes in different sizes, and I think mine is the A5 size (might be wrong about that), and you can use different journal inserts in there. This one came with a journal from Clairefontaine which I really love.

Hey, it's a good price for something made with titanium and made to fit any refill.
@55hikky
@55hikky 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you've never worked at a machine shop, nor had a vendor manufacture anything metal its not "affordable". $100 ish for a machined metal pen is actually CRAZY affordable. But this is a separate conversation from what I suspect you're talking about, which is "would I pay $100 for a PEN", and not what BMR is talking about, which is "would you pay $100 for an all metal, machined, collet tip holding, beautifully designed equipment/ jig /machine (used for writing)". It really depends in what you think you're buying and if you understand how amazing it is that they were able to manufacture this at this price point. As a reference, in my region, having a machinist make a part like this costs about $60 an hr. Not including quality control, assembly, r&d, or raw material cost. But big idea design does all this for $100 range. It is a VERRRY reasonable price, if you know what you're buying. And although I'm not sure how the lines are set up, but I suspect the collet/tip assembly has a pretty tight tolerance, which, if you know machining, can cost a lot due to increased manufacturing time for the precision involved, as well as decreased yield if done with poor process development. Again, if you don't know machining, its very normal for a normal person to think this is expensive.

I know what you mean, but I think you feel unwarranted guilt. Everyone has something that they are passionate about, and sometimes that is about social issues, and sometimes it isn't. I have certain social issues that I care about, donate to, and help out, but not everyone has the same convictions. With this channel, I think it's important to talk about products that are made well. I think if people are more deliberate about what they buy, they will consume less, and if they buy something that will last for decades to come, that's less things in landfills. As a personal thing, I also don't think there is anything wrong with just wanting something nice. I don't think you are wrong, but I would just say that these things are not mutually exclusive. We can care about big issues while also liking things for ourselves.
