Big L nearly ended Nas's career before it even started! Story I heard was Nas was about to come out and then someone showed him a demo tape from a guy he never heard of called Big L and Nas was shook! He said "if that's the level of the guys I'm up against in this hip hop game, I don't know what I'm doing" (or something to that effect). He genuinely went back and re-wrote verses before dropping Illmatic. That's how good Big L was. RIP.

Just my opinion and perspective. Big L definitely makes lists for some people on talent alone, especially hip hop heads. But did he affect the culture? Did he leave a mark with WHAT he said, not just HOW he said it? I'm not sure. If you ask me, when we make lists - we're talking about GOATs. Is L one of them?
