Absolutely unbelievable Big Mama Thornton don't imagine we'll ever see anyone or any female or male who can sing the blues with that much heart and soul at least in my lifetime such a gift to be able to hear this

Today, many years after this recording and the interpretation by Janis Joplin, i heard Big Mamma for the 1rst time on a french radio. I was a great fan of Janis Joplin until i realized how much her way of singing is a caricature of blues singing. Many people think you just need to have a husky voice like Janis Joplin to be a good blues singer. I undertand why black people were so hurted when she was "crowned" as queen of blues, when you listen at the real older blues and jazz singer.

I saw Big Mama Thornton on her first european tour in 1965 I was 10 years old. The venue was Manchester Free Trade Hall. Just love her voice, such power and emotion.

It hurts to see her like this. Idk what her personal life was aside from her being a heavy boozer, but she was the best.

Big Mama sings Rufus Thomas' The Dog (Walikin' The Dog) in medley with Hound Dog, just like she used to do from 1977 to 1984.

Her drummer in this video ended up getting progressive MS a few years ago and could no longer play the bass drum. Now through a natural process the brain uses to heal itself when injured called brain plasticity, she is starting to get her ability back. Just like I did in 2002-3. Brain plasticity works for anyone, doing anything with their hands or feet. Google Get Back Your Music Phil See to see a short video about it and please, spread the word if you know anyone with MS or Parkinson's, etc,. Thanks, Phil See

Who was this great band, particularly the keyboard player? Big Mama was "Outstanding" with the best blue's I've heard in many years. Wow, she just blows the mind. Great clip here and I hope someone can answer for me who the backup band was. Thanks.

When I saw her in Portland Oregon toward late 80s she was thin as a rail and mostly sat on a chair. However she did a fine show.

It kinda was hers, but not really. She sang it first, but she didn't write it so she can't really call it her own song. It was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
