In this Big Me guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all the chords to this fun and easy song by the Foo Fighters.
We will be using standard tuning.
There are basically 3 separate chord progressions that use mostly open position chords.
Throughout a lot of the verse you will need to keep your little finger on the 3rd fret of the high E string while you transition from a C major to A minor chord underneath it. This is probably going to be one of the trickiest parts of the song to play since it requires a bit of a stretch between your 3rd and 4th finger.
If that chord change is too difficult, a simple C major to A minor chord change is fine, in fact, that is what Dave Grohl does live most of the time.
I will take you through each chord progression in the order that it appears in the song and will also show you a simple strumming pattern you can use.

My band decided to cover this song. When I learned it, I noticed that the chords and chord progression are very similar to Prince's Purple Rain, but it is in a different key. I played Purple Rain, using them, and my band thought it was actually Purple Rain. Of course, the tempo is very different. Big Me uses two strings as pedal notes, in a similar fashion (if that is correct music terminology, I am not real a musician, I just play guitar), but they are not the same chords, transposed. I think the songs are much too similar for this to be coincidental, but I also think that the similarities are not evident by just listening to the song. I would guess that David Grohl is a Prince fan and that he consciously or subconsciously slightly changed Purple Rain's chords and chord progression to write Big Me.

Who am I to give a tip, but here's one for those struggling to hit that barre chord shape quickly enough, at least coming from E: Play the open E with 2nd, 3rd and 4th finger (instead of 1st, 2nd and 3rd), then you have the barre shape almost in place. To progress to F from there is easy, you just move those fingers up one fret and add the barre.
