If you look at Pete’s stats, it’s been kinda up and down. Only in 2022 did he have a better average and more hits than his rookie year. He did have a slightly better average in 2021, but fewer hits than his rookie year. He’s decent enough on defense. I just don’t think it’s wise to sign a 9-year contract with him, until he shows he can go the distance, and it seems like theses teams think the same.

It's become apparent to me that Alonso is the last "big fish" the Mets are after and will only sign him at their price ..... if Pete goes elsewhere, the Mets will address the hole with internal options ..... I do not see Sterns and Company pursuing any more staring pitchers (beyond Sasaki, which honestly would be a Cohen acquisition) and I do not expect any high leverage relief pitchers. I am disappointed tat the Mets went cheap after landing the big fish (Soto). I am also disappointed that Sterns has not made a single major trade ..... he is on record stating he likes the trade market and gave the impression early in the off-season that he was eager to make trades ..... result: Siri.

Let Pete walk. If not we'll be stuck with a sub par fielder, a .220 hitter who hits a homer every 5 games and when he isn't doing that, he strikes out, hits singles or grounds into double plays. He's also a .220-.230 hitter with runners in scoring position. There's a reason why no one wants him. Forget all that meaningless drivel about launch angles and exit velocity. It means nothing if you only hit the ball twice every ten at bats. Let him walk. We can trade for Vladdy or sign him next year. He's a HITTER as opposed to a Dave Kingman type slugger like Pete. Mets fans get too attached to players, the TEAM is trying to win.

That said, I also agree with the retiring of Wrights #5, however I feel that #5 should be a "Co-Retire". I don't feel there has ever been a more deserving member of Mets Personnel to have their number retired (Not named Tom Seaver) than The One and Only Davey Johnson. The controversy was completely ginned up by overzealous social media commentators, clickbait podcasters, and the usual outrage machine of fandom. Nobody reported that Pete was seeking a 9 year deal. It just was NOT the report. It was mentioned that during negotiations, Boras had "referenced" Fielder's contract as a "comparison." From that meager information, it turned into "OMG ... Pete is demanding 9 years!" As far as controversies go, this is among the stupidest. And I'm sure the reason that the info was redacted from the article is simply in recognition of how it was being misrepresented and blown out of proportion.

The Lindor payment was an overpay at the time but was necessary for Cohen to make a statement ..... now four years in, the Lindor contract has actually aged well ..... cannot make any assessment on the Soto contract yet ..... the Nimmo contract was a severe overpay at the time and has aged poorly ..... Nimmo is not and has never deserved an 8-year, $160M player ..... why on earth would the Mets invest 5, 6, or 7 years in Alonso? To even him out with Nimmo? NO. Sterns/Cohen need to make Boras a best and final offer (whatever that is) and give him 48 hours to accept or reject it. If he rejects it, then move forward with whatever their next move is.

But, as an aside, in the season after which he broke the MLB record for HRs by a rookie, establishing himself as the top HR hitter in the NL, he made well less than $1 million ($676,775). Just fyi. While being the most prolific HR hitter in the NL during his career, Pete has had only one season in which he earned more than $14.5 mil.

I don't think it is too hard to understand. Pete has put in his time in MLB ... the six years in which players are barred from testing the market -- and he's trying to maximize his value now that he finally is able to go into the market. He has been the top HR hitter in the NL since he first stepped on the field back in 2019 ... but he's earned more than $7 mil/season only twice, and more than $14.5 mil only once. He is thinking ... "hey, I became the most prolific HR hitter in the NL during 2019, and I got paid well less than $1 million in my next season ... it is time to get paid." I'm sure that is the thought process. Fans don't like it, but it should be easily understandable.

I wish players would stop talking about "making a living for their family." Making a living for your family means being sure they have good food, clothing, and shelter. Being sure they can afford a good education, can get help when they're sick, can have some extra money for having fun. That's making a living for your family. Trying to get tens of millions of dollars for years in the future when you know that you won't be worth it anymore and you'll be an albatross around a team's neck is not "making a living for your family."
@steveninsinna174311 сағат бұрын
Total BS. They have enough money for 1O generations. Yes..stop using that BS statement.
@dashx11034 сағат бұрын
I know. Right? Greedy players trying to fleece the poor owners. Can you imagine if Steve Cohen had to spend an extra however many million to bring Pete back? That poor guy, what a dent that would make in his $25 billion dollar worth. Crazy. I just hate how people try to support players in contract disputes instead of supporting the owners. I mean, we don't go to the ball park to watch the players, after all. We go to watch the billionaire owners in their luxury boxes. These players need to get their priorities straight.
@cnerrie54332 сағат бұрын
@@dashx1103 I understand that most fans have no problem with players pulling down tens of millions of dollars while no longer being able to play at a high level -- and, in fact, hurting the team by taking up resources and space. I do have a problem with that. In addition, I do not understand how a proud man would put himself in the position of being an albatross around the neck of his team. Billionaire owners are not my concern, one way or the other. But putting that aside, I thought it was clear that I was complaining about the dishonest use of the phrase “making a living for their family” to describe this conduct, a phrase which we hear over and over. I have a problem with misrepresenting greed as somehow providing necessities for your family, especially if you consider how many families are in circumstances where they actually do not have the basic necessities of life, where “making a living for your family” is an real issue.
@dashx1103Сағат бұрын
@@cnerrie5433 I guess I have no real problem in pushing back against that. Anytime a person earns money, it is reasonable to say he earns it for his family. For some of us, it is less than it is for others. But for a highly skilled athlete who has the ability to earn for himself and for his family, I have no issue with the phrase "for my family." Sure it is easy for us to resent the idea of an athlete claiming his hundreds of millions of dollars as being for the welfare of his "family." But I also think that is why it is important to counter it with the reality that the give-and-take in contracts is between athletes and owners ... owners who are by-and-large billionaires. The social conditioning is to train our eyes on the players and say "man, I'd love to make $100 million or more, what is this guy complaining about?" But the reality is that on the other side of the equation is a billionaire owner who won't be put out in any sense if he pays the additional millions for the player. And let's be honest, .. we go to the ball park to see the players, not to watch the billionaires in their luxury suites. So, that is what I'm getting at. I have become increasingly convinced that fans are fundamentally conditioned to side with ownership in contract disputes with players. And I don't think it is coincidence. From my perspective, as a fan, I want Pete back in the Mets lineup come April. And if that doesn't happen, I'll be unhappy. But I certainly am not inclined to blame Pete for wanting more as opposed to the ownership that wants to pay less. If that makes sense.
