Now we're so saturated with toxic substances we're the canaries in the coal mine for toxic substances. Almost everything affects us terribly. We can only use completely natural products. I don’t know the particular circumstances of your business and how you treat your employees, just that in general we would live in a much more just and equitable society if the workers owned the means of production. And by the way, that would make it easier to start your own enterprise. The current mindset of pulling oneself up by their bootstraps just serves to protect the rich and powerful and keeps workers as well as small business owners down. Democratization of the workplace would have the impact of regulating the balance of power. No matter how well intentioned an oppressor is they exist to protect the structure of power that keeps them in control.

Petrochemicals are in everything from cosmetics to food. To remove them would entirely change our economy. I can’t imagine that Big Oil would contritely accept responsibility, that it would give up the subsidies, or that it would willingly participate in cleaning up the mess the industry has caused. The American people would fight it, too, because it would change the way they live. And based on historical evidence of what happened with tobacco, people will demand to keep using petrochemicals because they don’t want to change.

Ok, so how exactly will a construction worker bring a 400 pound toolbox to the jobsite? How will a mother take 3 small children to the grocery store on a bus and buy a weeks worth of groceries? How exactly will you move? So you want to take a 2 hour drive to the beach, you take the bus instead? Does a farmer bring his crops to market on a bus? Cars are not the new smoking, they are convenient and necessary, unless you can carry a shower insert to a job on a bicycle.

What's not fine is suburbanites circling around in traffic all day every day because there isn't an alternative to driving. It's not good for the environment, it's not good for the children, it's not good for mental health, and it endangers everyone around you. The more folks we get out of their cars who don't want to drive, the easier it will be for the construction workers and other folks who actually need to drive. Also, I do take transit to the beach actually. There's a light rail or I just bike there. It's so much better than sitting in traffic.

Only 20% of Americans smoke now. That's a lot less than when I was growing up during the 60s and 70s and both my parents were blowing smoke in my face every day of my childhood. If you think Americans smoke a lot, you should see how addicted to tobacco people are in the Middle East and Europe. I'm sure a lot of other places in the world are, as well, but I've only been to the Middle East and Europe, so I can't speak to any other areas of the globe.
