The stack train just kept on moving again almost loaded to the brim. I missed seeing this coal train earlier but saw them talking about it on the virtual rail camera in Kearney NE. Front half most likely headed to Weston WI while the back half look like it's headed to Michigan. Nice little set on the Iowa Northern especially seeing the slug and then the plow that still is lettered for Chicago Central. That is the one tough part about some lines where you don't think snow is going to slow them down but if it drifts badly it really packs in those cuts. A nice ending to 2022 and the Drone certainly did its part

Thanks Paul B! The heritage locomotive was a nice surprise. That's the first time I saw that one. IANR sure does like it's slugs. I talked to the engineer that ran that plow, sounds like a lot of cars run crossings in front of it. Would have been awesome to catch that plow in action under the drone. Maybe some other day!!

Wasnt that UP 1111 something else? What a snazzy paint job! Yup!, that plow could use some WD-40, silicone spray, or a heavy Teflon coating! Anything to make that snow much easier to plow through at track speed!

That was a pretty cool locomotive Paul S! I heard 1111 was going into service shortly after that. Pam spray cooking oil is handy to keep the snow from sticking to the plow.

@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 yeah, i heard through the grapevine that its something with oil overpressure on tbe crankshaft, whatever that is, doesnt sound good. Yes, those cooking sprays do wonders on all kinds of snow removal equipment! It got warm enough to spawn some spring-like storms just outside the area i live in late this afternoon. Its way toooooooo early for that stuff! But then it gets down to freezing overnight here in central Illinois😵😨😱❗

Thanks Daylight Dave! My Dad worked for the CNW and UP. I was told the speed limit on loaded coal trains was 40mph. That crossover has a speed rating of 50 mph. Did you used to run down some old CNW rails?

@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 That is really cool.. I grew up in N. Milwaukee in the late 60's and early 70's and would ride my bike over to the C&NW Lake Shore Sub and see the old ALCo's.. I can tell that x-over was good for 40+ mph.. I hired out w/ the UP and have worked all over N. CA... My Sis is over in Galena, IL and deals w/ the same weather as you.. Keep up w/ the nice vodeos. @@daylightdave9405 You got it Dave! My Dad headed the rail grinder operations for UP until 2011. He traveled the whole system. Sounds like the Sierra Nevada area was the trickiest.

Nice catches especially with the plow in front of that CN GP40-2W. Also, UP 1111 was taken out of service shortly afterwards because the unit suffered an crankcase overpressure and it’s now heading to North Little Rock for repairs and a repaint

Great catch Red. I was wondering if you had seen the plough head. I watched him go through the Iowa Falls Diamond yesterday on the new live cam there! The CN & UP SUB at Mills Tower! Is the car behind to catch all the snow or just the excess? Anyhow the dispatcher said he flicked a chunk of snow onto the main when he slid into the siding! THAT WAS A COOL DPU in the coal car! Thanks Agent Mulder! I have some drone footage from the Mills Tower. I released it over the Summer. That plow is mounted to that car and used for weight. Some railroads used old steam tender cars to mount their plows to. Yes Montour never seems to disappoint! Enjoy the warm weather down there👍

That was some nice action on the Union Pacific at Montour, Iowa on 10 December 2022. The eastbound coal train was extremely long. It was unusual to see three mid-train DPUs. That was a good catch of the Iowa Northern train coming out of B Yard in Waterloo, Iowa on Christmas Eve. Did you hang around to see that Canadian National train head out on the Osage Subdivision after dark or did you leave before it started to move.? The Chicago area was hit by the same winter storm that you had in your area of Iowa during the Christmas holiday. Like you the weathermen over predicted the amount of snow that we would get. There were correct on the windchill factors though.

Thanks Thomas! I was pleased to catch that heritage locomotive too. I didn't hang around for the plow to get moving. It was pretty cold that day. Catching a snow plow with my drone sure would be sweet. Yes the weather man around here pumped up the storm too. We only got half of the snow they thought we would!

That UP coal train was actually two trains. UP runs there coal trains with two locomotives on the front and one in the end. Most likely that train will split and go to two different locations. That Iowa locomotives have a similar paint as the older Canadian Pacific (block or script). If you look that up you will see what I mean. The Canadian Pacific has painted a few heritage units like that. Steven Sipes

Yep, pretty sure the coal train will split into two and go to Wisconsin. Paul Bergen is up to speed on that subject. I've heard that from others on the CP colors of the Iowa Northern.

Slugs are used for extra traction. They have traction motors but no generator or engine. They get their electrical power from the diesel locomotives.
