// Lyrics //
I tapped on the window on your darkest night
The shape of you
Was jagged and weak
There was nowhere for me to stay
But I stayed anyway
And if I would’ve known
How many pieces you had crumbled into
I might have let them lay
Are you really gonna talk about timing
In times like these
And let all your damage
Damage me
Carry your baggage up my street
And make me your future history
It’s time, you’ve come a long way
Open the blinds
Let me see your face
You wouldn’t be the first renegade
To need somebody
Is it insensitive for me to say
Get your shit together
So I can love you
Is it really your anxiety
That stops you from giving me everything
Or do you just not want to?
I tapped on the window on your darkest night
The shape of you
Was jagged and weak
There was nowhere for me to stay
But I stayed anyway
You fire off missiles cause
You hate yourself
But do you know you're demolishing me?
Then you squeeze my hand
As I'm about to leave
Are you really gonna talk about timing
In times like these
And let all your damage
Damage me
Carry your baggage up my street
And make me your future history
It’s time, you’ve come a long way
Open the blinds
Let me see your face
You wouldn’t be the first renegade
To need somebody
Is it insensitive for me to say
Get your shit together
So I can love you
Is it really your anxiety
That stops you from giving me everything
Or do you just not want to?
And if I would’ve known
How sharp the pieces were
You’d crumbled into
I might’ve let them lay
Are you really gonna talk about timing
In times like these
And let all your damage
Damage me
Carry your baggage up my street
And make me your future history
It’s time, you’ve come a long way

@@GaryOk-ft5jw The person she's talking about is in a bad mental state. (assuming it's written for a male). So when she tries to talk to him and make him better, he says words that are bitter and inflict self hate. He says and makes bad decisions because he doesn't love himself. But these words and decisions hurt her in turn. They break her down, they break her patience to stay with him. It's like she can only suffer so much, after a point she'll be hurt too. Tldr:- When you're mentally unhealthy, you do and say things thinking about yourself and how you don't like your life. But these decisions have consequences which hurt people around you.

I don’t know, maybe I am the oldest Swiftie. I will be 69 in September. But I just love her and her music. I lived through the whole folk music revival back in the 1960’s, with brilliant songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez. I would put Taylor right up there with the best of them. When it comes to songwriting, she is in a class by herself. Her lyrics are more intelligent, more articulate, than anyone else around these days. So many artists, even the best ones, have a certain style. Their songs all have a similar sound to them. But not Taylor. Her music is always different, always so interesting. What a treasure she is. Thanks for letting this “golden oldie” share his thoughts with all of you.

I wish there were more songs like this. It tackles a relationship with someone who is suffering mentally in a non-sappy nor overly sentimental kind of way. It's not a "I'll love you no matter what" song; this is the truth. It acknowledges how difficult it is to deal someone who is mentally unwell or disturbed, but at the same time reassures that they'll try their best to stay with them. The lyrics hurt, in a comforting manner -we need to get ourselves together so we can be loved. It basically says you're a mess but let's heal together. It's so beautiful and mature.

*Just an observation and some interpretations I wanted to put out there-* At the beginning of the song, the lyrics go: "And if I would’ve known how many pieces you had crumbled into, I might’ve let them lay." Later in the song the lyrics subtly change to: “And if I would’ve known how sharp the pieces were you’d crumbled into, I might’ve let them lay.” My interpretation is that this brings out the different challenges faced in the relationship. At first, the lyrics talk about the _numerous_ broken pieces, showing how you spend lots of time and energy in gathering the several pieces of broken glass, pieces of the other person. Later, the lyrics talk about how _sharp_ the pieces are and how painful the whole process could be. The fact that this change comes in later in the song shows how over time all the efforts and energy someone spends in trying to help a loved one with mental struggles actually turns into hurt and pain - pain from the "ripple effect" of the other's mental illness, pain from being pushed out, pain from not being able to _help_ them the way you want to What do you guys think? Any thoughts/interpretations, or a lyric that spoke to you?

I get callbacks to her song ME! and how it got bullied so much by Swifties when it is a song about feeling good. "There was nowhere for ME! to stay, but I stayed anyway" - people saying it didn't fit her discography "Is it insensitive for ME! to say get your sh!t together, so I can love you?" - double meaning: her take on the outright criticism over childish lyrics on the song, the value of enjoying life to the fullest "Is it your anxiety that stops ME! from giving your everything?" - their insecurities over the happy emotion "Let all your damage damage ME!" - people wanting a complex song and only looked at ME! at face value "Make ME! your future history"/"Open the blinds, let ME! see your face" - soaking in the joyfulness so it can be part of your personal legacy and even momentary demeanor "You fire off missiles 'cause you hate yourself . But do you know you're demolishing ME!" - the hateful nature surrounding the criticism defeating the purpose of the song ME!

Maybe I'm overanalysing right now, but the line "I tapped on your window on your darkest night" is really intriguing to me. She could've said "I knocked on your door on your darkest night", but she didn't. And we all know that Tay is really good at using diction effectively. I think this line implies that the speaker knew what they were about to deal with. They could see or at least assume this person's state of being. When you knock a door, you are expecting someone, but you don't really know who exactly is gonna open the door for you. However, this speaker knows. They can see through the window that this person is not doing well emotionally and mentally, but they decide to ask to come in and stay anyway

beautiful analysis! i have a sneaky connection on this. in cruel summer (lover) she says " killing me slow, out the window, i'm always waiting for you to be waiting below " like she can see out the window for him. and when he did tap on her window, he knew it was a gamble knowing her state of mind- like this is joe's song for taylor as much as this is her song. it has a similar beat to long story short. it reminds me of the opening of closure- its been a long time, the shape of your name, still spells out pain- especially the way she sings the shape of you was jagged and weak.
@safastarlight2341
@safastarlight2341 3 жыл бұрын
@@shalakaj523 Thank you :D And omg, you made some great points and connections, I love your interpretations! I think this is a pretty constant theme with Tay's songs. idk why but this song feels like a conversation with yourself. the version of yourself that wants to progress and be better vs your past version that's been holding you back. i imagine singing this words in a mirror especially the parts: "is it insensitive for me to say 'get your shit together' so i can love you" "is it really your anxiety that stops you from giving me everything or you just don't want to?" "you fire off missiles because you hate yourself but do you know that you're demolishing me?" damn. this song really hits the spot. big red machine and taylor swift really did a great job on this one.

I love that this could be sung to a partner going through it and not able to open up, but it could also be a song sung to yourself while in the midst of a deep depression. A new favorite song. As someone who grew up listening to Taylor, Bon Iver and the National, I will never get over how perfectly the three of them were able to work together. The songs and lyrics are just superior!

this might be one of the saddest lyrics taylor’s has ever written. it’s really devastating when you’re ready to willingly to give all of you to the other person but they’re just not on your level of commitment and want. so you stay for a moment, even if deep down you know it’s not gonna work, even if there’s no space for you, holding that tiny peace of hope with all that you’ve got but… turns out they really have to get their shit together so you can give and receive true love. so you walk away. and the understanding that it’s out of love and respect for yourself is liberating

Yeah, the line 'Is it insensitive for me to say get your shit together so I can love you' is the kind of thing that you feel but don't think you can ever express. I think it also works for people dating people with depression or something, where they'll never 'get their shit together' because it's a long-term illness and they'll have their good and bad days, and sometimes you just want them to be happy so you can have good times and love them but then they're just sad all the time and you can't say anything about it cause it's not their fault and...yeah.

My last relationship was exactly like this. I gave more than I physically and mentally could to a boy I never even thought I would ever talk to, only because I loved him and yet he broke, played, abused and manipulated me. Sometimes the more you want to support someone, the more they take you for granted. They diminish your image in your own eyes so you stick around forever. It was like I was in this trance until someone actually snapped me out of it. So, yes support the ones you love, but not to an extent that you completely erase yourself please
