The one major factor for me on Projector VS TV for home Theater..... Acoustically transparent screen. The sound setup I have just would not be the same with a TV. However I am incredibly glad you did this review as I have been teetering on replacing the screen with a TV... my audio being the biggest obstacle... but my use case is 50/50 Movies / Gaming... the better pixel response time and consistent refreshes top to bottom sealed it.... I'll bee sticking with projector for a while longer... well... until They have maybe a acoustically transparent QD-OLED at 120" lol

You were me about two weeks ago. I was coming from a Mitsubishi HC7800D 1080p DLP Home Theater 3D Projector with an Elite Screen 100" acoustically transparent screen to a LG 86" QNED90T Mini-Led display. I regret nothing except that these new displays no longer support 3D. I too was worried about the sound field coming from underneath the display but you get used to it to be honest. My Yamaha Aventage RX8A8 does have a center channel lift feature but activating it makes the front sound field sound weird.

This just confirms my thoughts. I've had the 100" Hisense L9G for about 2.5 years now and it's been awesome, but I do have to keep the blinds pretty much closed in my living room. The problem is I paid a boatload for that setup with the ALR screen, so I'm waiting..errr..hoping at this point that it dies so I can pick up a 100 or 110" QLED to replace it 😄. Exactly, if I had a dedicated cinema room, I would definitely choose a projector with AT screen. I only have a modest 5.1 home cinema with a 77" Oled TV but even with that "small" of a screen the position of the center channel is already a challenge. I imagine with a 100"+ TV it would be almost impossible to get the center into a good enough position if you are willing to go phantom center, that's not an issue though.
@Crushonius3 күн бұрын
@@floz9718 i encourage everyone with a big tv to try and put the center above it it seems nuts but it actually feels more like the sound is coming from the center of the tv because you are sitting kinda lower then the tv it lines up pretty good

Not a lot of info on mid range projectors that aren’t single LCD $800-1300 range! Thanks for another amazing video! I was in the EXACT dilemma a few weeks ago (I wanted to replace 5yo 65inch tv) and in the end I went for Hisense px3 with valerion 120 floor rising screen. Here are my reasons: - 120 is IMERSIVE and noticeable bigger than 100. - I hate the look of 100 inch tv dominating my living room, floor rising screen and projector are hidden in my cupboard - I watch it 90% during the night. If I would need it during the day, I would definitely go for tv, projector is barely usable in my living room. Evening watching is already great. My conclusion is that it is really up to a personal preferences and room conditions. As things look I'll never go back to tv because I wouldn't want 100' tv or bigger dominating my living room.

Glad to see you do a somewhat tested review of the u76n. Currently you are the only review i have seen for the tv that did any testing on it at all. Depsite the tv selling very well, none of the major reviewers have reviewed my tv or did any test on it. There is pretty much zero comparison videos of the larger 98 to 100 inch class tvs also. So knowing which set to buy you have to base souly on specs alone. Which kinda sucks for tv buyers in this size class. Ratings and even digital trends have not done any comparison videos of this size class of tv. Many reviews for these tvs dont even exist at all. Like i said no tested reviews other than yours for any testing on the u76n. I also have not seen any reviews for the 98 inch samsung du9000d either. Now with the qm7,qm8, u8k you kinda can just base those off of their smaller model counter parts. But some of these tvs are not in a class but kinda its own unique set. Like the u76n is not a u7n. Its a completely unique model tv that shares specs with u8 and u7 series and its not a mini led. Same with the large 98 inch samsung not really sharing specs with smaller counterparts. My 86 lg didn't really have any tested reviews either. I had the ur8000 86 inch lg before this tv and while it has smaller counterparts the 86 inch had 120hz panel.instead of the smaller sets having only 60hz and some features the smaller sets did not have like the magic remote and vrr. Its also slightly brighter than the smaller sets with a different upgraded cpu. So sometimes these larger sets are their own unique tv and they often get overlooked with no reviews at all for that specific set unfortunately. Specially not tested reviews or comparison reviews. So that being said I hope more reviewers start doing larger models that have different specs and do tested reviews on these tvs.

I bought this exact tv last fall for $2300. It was the best decision we could make. It replaced a fairly nice 120” screen with a vivatek 4K projector. Even in our basement Rec room, with no windows, it’s so nice to be able to have a lamp or other lights on without impacting image quality. Yes we downgraded in size and I do miss that especially in 23:9 where you already lose a ton of image real estate to the black bars, but it’s just night and day difference especially for $2k. You just can’t get a projector combo anywhere close. One of my buddies replaced his 105” projector with it and another scrapped his projector plans to go with it as well.

FYI: The Hisense TV looks better in SDR than HDR overall. Lower brightness means the blacks are OLED like, the slight grey/blue haze to the image disappears, and the colours are more accurate.
@TheHookUp5 күн бұрын
I disagree, I tested DV, HDR10 with DTM and SDR and I thought DViQ was the best image mode by a significant margin.
@zoominginonstuff81465 күн бұрын
@@TheHookUp Fair enough. I just don't like that slight haze in some scenes when the backlight is on full blast. (I meant SDR at 150nits or less). Maybe it's more content dependent than SDR vs HDR as such. Thanks for the good comparison video by the way.
@TheHookUp4 күн бұрын
Do you mean on a TV without local dimming? The U76N has very effective local dimming zones.
@zoominginonstuff81464 күн бұрын
I have a U7K 100" in Australia which is MiniLED 1500nit brightness and 1620dimming zones. In HDR mode with backlight at 100 it is very good but the black bars are raised a bit and you can see a slight haze over the picture occasionally as you mentioned in the video. Some HDR stuff is great but a lot of movies actually technically look better in SDR with the backlight set at 5 and around 180nits as the bars are OLED black even in a dark room and picture has a bit more depth due to the perfect gamma tracking and more precise colours. I know one misses out on the brighter highlights, but movies that spend most of their time below 200nits and are properly mastered in SDR (Not tone mapped from an HDR source) just look more OLED Like and natural. It might be interesting for others with similar TVs to experiment though, as coming from OLED TVs I just assumed HDR would always be better until I played around with this LED which behaves differently depending on the Backlight level.

What a comparison video, truly inclusive of all buying considerations. Thank you for your hard work. Does this actually matter?

In my experience and testing, no. That is a line that I often repeated but in practice I did not have any more eye fatigue watching the TV vs watching the projector.

Great video! I think the light recreation was a bit aggressive. Most people just have dimmable pot lights which aren’t causing much issues on a tv. I personally just use lamps rather than overhead lights which makes it easy to just turn off the ones that would cause glare. & for the price difference there is a lot of options, you can buy a higher end TV, a pretty awesome sound system and still have money left over

Clearly, the best of all worlds is a 100” TV for daytime viewing with a 120” (or larger) motorized screen dropping down in front of it. Of course, that requires a substantial budget but if you go a little smaller on the TV (and a little cheaper on the projector and screen) you can do it more affordably. I’ve been doing this for a while now and have been very happy with it but if I had the budget for electrochromic PDLC blackout smart film for my windows, I’d much rather skip the TV and just focus on light control. Rob, you might consider doing some videos/reviews of smart film options.

One thing that no one talks about is that it's possible to do full-size behind-the-screen speakers with an acoustically transparent screen and projector setup. Yes, I know that the picture quality takes a hit and there is room logistics to be mindful of, but going that route is extremely immersive and enjoyable. Putting three tower speakers behind the TV at 150+ inches is impossible.
@Swecan764 күн бұрын
The simple reality is this: If you can manage to bring in a large TV like a 98" or up to 116". Those even the "not as good" ones will still out perform any projector and UST. The black levels, brightness and contrast etc will be better. This example of U76N is a pretty 'bad' one as well. With that I mean there are far better TVs to get at large size.

I don't have a projector, and might never get one, but I'm interested mostly for the 3D playback feature. I do plan to get the future Samsung VR headset, but converting my 3D movies would be a pretty big hassle. Mainly interested in UST projectors. The Nexigo Aura Pro catches my eye, but between the price of the projector, an appropriate screen, and issues with space....

Call me old or just overly nostalgic but for a home theater you just can’t beat a projector. Fine for video games and the news but for movies give me a projector!

Interesting comparison. But given the price of the projectors with screen a better comparison would be the 98” QM8 which has better picture quality.
@TheHookUp4 күн бұрын
I disagree. Not only is the QM8 a different image processor so it would have been nearly impossible to match picture options, but it's also not true 100", and it's almost $6000 which would have made it by far the most expensive option. Do you really think the QM8 is 3x better than the U76N to support the 3x price increase? If anything the Hisense U8N would have been a good pick, but again I'm not sure the added dimming zones are worth a $1200 price increase on a $1800 TV.
@dobiesj3 күн бұрын
@TheHookUp The 98” QM8 has been on sale multiple times for $2999. The 98” QM7 is on sale now for $1999 and is better than the U76N. Both of these TVs cost a lot less than the these projector setups. Calibration settings will be different on each so the goal shouldn’t be to match the processors between projectors and a QLED but rather to determine which offers the best picture for the price. Projectors used to be the bee’s knee for large viewing starting at 100”. That’s no longer the case with affordable QLEDs in the 98” or 100” size, outside specific use cases - example, can’t get the TV in the room/dwelling or dedicated light controlled home theater room.
@mjrtensepian17272 күн бұрын
I prefer the cinematic experience, and reflected light of a projector; seems easier on the eyes than direct light of TV. Also less intrusive than a giant black rectangle; Been feeling nostalgic for an era when life wasn't consumed by the "black mirror", and their presence in a room was limited to 20-odd inches in the corner.

Rob, I appreciate how you do a comparison, and then *don't* end it with something like "All these would be fine for anybody, depending on your needs." You make a definitive choice, and explain why one might be better than another. Thanks! Of course, your science-first approach to the analysis is spot-on. You're leveling the tests, taking removing variables so you can measure products and technologies on an equal footing. And we get to *see* what you're talking about, not just see a talking head; more showing, less telling. My only suggestion: talk a *liilte* bit slower? Product comparison suggestion: Smart LED wafer lights. RGBW types, and controllable by Home Assistant. Preferably those that are no thicker than the ceiling drywall, so ceiling joist locations aren't a concern. And give some testing to longevity of the lights (my Lumary lights are failing after less than two years).
@TheHookUp5 күн бұрын
Longevity is unfortunately SO hard to test. By the time I complete a 1 year longevity test it's likely that the product will have changed significantly enough to make the original tests invalid (PCB redesigns, model number changes, etc).

@pfurrie4 күн бұрын
@@TheHookUp Difficult: yep, insofar as just setting it up. Fortunately, not much care and feeding after that. Could gather actual "on" time from metrics within Home Assistant in order to get accurate data without as much fuss. As far as usefulness... if I'm going to put in a dozen or more of these kinds of lights (I installed 16), then its nice not to have to change out the lot of them after a year if they start going bad. They're not like screw-in bulbs that can be swapped out in 30 seconds. Would take me at least five minutes per light to change these out, and that is going quickly... if I have to change out the fixture and the associated power supply, which is wired in. If just one went bad and I had to do that (which I already did one), that isn't too bad, as long as a similar brand/model light is used. But if I determine that one brand is flawed, it might necessitate changing to some other brand. And will want all of them on the same brand, so they match in terms of light output, color temp, color rendering, and other visible features. Very non-trivial. Rtings.com does longevity tests of TVs (www.rtings.com/tv/tests/longevity-burn-in-test-updates-and-results) as this is a critical aspect of a purchase decision. Granted, TVs cost more than one LED downlight, but buying 16 lights at ~$30 each adds up to just south of $500, putting it in the same league as plenty TVs out there. If my TV started crapping out at 13 months in, I'd be bummed that I hadn't heeded Rtings.com's longevity tests for a given brand.

It seems like the size of the box and standard doorframes is the biggest limitation to making TVs even bigger. I’ve seen a trend away from theater rooms towards media areas where a TV is better utilized due to more light. That being said we love our home theater with 120 inch screen but it sure wasn’t cheap

@@TheHookUp wow. you seem to be correct. I did not know that the change had swept through the entire market. I got a used Epson 6040UB (850 bucks) with a manual 150 inch drop down screen (250 bucks), so if you compromise a bit, it does not have to be that much expensive 🙂 I also have a 55 inch oled TV, which is where I watch the majority of the content. Only movies and certain TV shows go on the projector and only when it is dark outside. Projectors are imho only a secondary screen to a TV, I think a TV will always look better, but I did meet some people, that like the cinema-like image from a projector more.

I'm going to comment before I watch this video. I just recently purchased an AWOL 3500 UST Projector with a floor rising 120" screen. This is replacing a 75" Sony Bravia 3DTV. I also own an 86" LG TV. I can 100% say that the picture quality of my projector is not close to that of my TV's. For me I bought the projector for one reason, 3D. If it had not been for the fact that TV's no longer support 3D, I would have 100% chosen a 100" TV. I don't hate the projector, the 3D is great and the 120" screen is awesome but when it comes to the picture quality , it's not even close.

PX3-Pro is a huge step up over the LTV-3500 in terms of contrast and image processing, so it comes a little closer to TVs, but I think you'll see in the video that for black levels nothing beats a TV.

This is a really great video! I've been following your content for a long time. I have a question: How does the Valerion Pro2 paired with a Fresnel screen compare to a TV? Personally, I use a Fresnel screen with the Hisense C2 Ultra, and it works well as a TV replacement, even in a room with ambient light. However, in a completely dark room, I feel that the projector's brightness is too high.

One additional issue if you are looking for main screen in dedicated space with surround sound, speakers are an issue too as you can put them behind a screen but not a TV. For a very large screen (115+) you might not even have room on the sides and or the bottom for a tv.
@cr0ft-2k4 күн бұрын
ALR screens generally don't do audio transparency; they use a textured surface to produce the ALR performance, and making perforations in those screens is probably not happening. AT screens can also cause enormous amounts of laser speckle on some triple lasers.

hey bro ,,, one thing which i can guarente is .... we can stare at any scene and watch it closely very comfortably in a projected image . BUt in tv you cant stare or watch anything without rubbing your eyes. if you look at anything very close . secondly ,, A reflected light or image is always less harmfull for eyes . then any direct light coming from a tv . if you b love your eyes ,,, go for projector. thirdly ,, watching tv can can give headache and blinking eyes to people who dont have perfect vision or eye probs. projector can be tolerated more .
@TheHookUp5 күн бұрын
I used to say all those same things, but I can tell you that after sitting in a dark garage for an entire week watching the different screens they just do not apply anymore. 1. The TV did not cause any more eye strain than the projector 2. Reflected laser light sources are just as bright and have the same effects on the eyes as a backlit TV 3. DLP RBE and Tri-Laser Speckle are associated with significantly more headaches/flickering issues than LCD panels. I love projectors, I use them all over my house, but I also value the truth and after a significant amount of testing those 3 "Projector vs TV" myths no longer hold up.

@BaneWilliams5 күн бұрын
@@apocalypseap It depends on what you mean? I care more about artists intent than my own perceptions, which is why I use a reference monitor for colour work. Viewing this video (yes youtube compression does cause some loss here) and directly comparing it to universal pictures own released trailer footage, I would say the U76N is the superior accuracy. You can see more of the sky, the skin colour is accurate (it's still quite brown in the valerion, but nowhere near as bad as the PX3-PRO). This is why I prefer referencing parts of movies in reviews which are also in trailer footage. If you view the Wicked Official Trailer at 18 seconds in, you will see a perfect scene to showcase this accuracy. It has blues, reds, and greens and any viewer should be able to make a comparison.

The writing was on the wall for USTs 2-3 years ago when we got the first 98/100inch TV under 10K. Even then, I never dreamed they will drop to 2k and less withing 2 years. Now we have 115in HIGH END miniled tvs approaching the price high end hometheater projectors. Edit: You don't buy UST for a completely dark room, so the situations where it outperforms a TV is moot. . I'm curious how the L9Q with its dedicated screen would fare in this comparison. Does such a projector have a chance to at least give a substitute for a TV? Probably even if it does, it will be loud as hell at this (maximum) brightness.
@TheHookUp5 күн бұрын
The problem isn’t really brightness as much as ambient light rejection. The Valerion gave a much brighter feel than the TV in a dark room despite having 1/3 the peak brightness. The L9Q uses a super high gain screen, but I think the answer is actually high brightness + very low gain.

I will say something that is only mentioned on some review - as someone who owns a smaller model of this hisense TV, you are NEVER going to use peak brightness in a dark space - it will physically hurt your eyes. Myself and guests all physically recoiled in some scenes watching some content that goes from a dark scene instantly to a bright one. I think at this point we can say that the Hisense has excessive brightness and has surpassed a brightness ceiling at least for night time watching with the lights off. Now for daytime watching, that brightness is great.

@ oh hey I hear ya ! Just wanna help . Cuz ppl come from Projectors often assume TV watching the same . I would too . Cuz human r not set up to watch image too bright in the dark . But human r set to MOST capable watch shows when the environment is actually brighter (mall light ) so in pitch black room --- there are 20X eye rods -- brightness sensor . They will self trigger to OVER BLOWN up the brightness -- in our eyes in dark room . Those sensors r at the ⭕️ surrounding area of Retina outside of focal point . To detect - environment . In case u walk at night u dont trip fall into jungle , also can detect danger . So the soundings in the room just just Tad bit too dim . So it eyes 👀 (pupils micro muscles ) 💪🏼 will focus 🧘🏻 NOT restricting eyes but Try to open more to allow eyes 👀 see more Color . U will see more clear . Yeah often biggest mistake is we don’t realize the Laser tv is reflection , LED tv is light source . The light source is actually fine if --- turn UP the color volume setting . So that we see MORE Color in the dark room instead of Black n white . Thats why those Hisense U8 U9N UX so high end . They have 3-3.5 X color volume 🔮/ Density of LG flagship G4, 1.8-2.2 X Color Density of Sony Flagship A95L Qd-OLED . I suggest u turn down the -- contrast (it controls brightest peak white ) Also drastically turn UP the color . Once the Color Sensity is up 🪼 it’s not bright at all . Yeah I hate those dark scenes then out of blue so bright , they had those in Game of thrones , spooks me lol . Didn’t help they make the dark scenes SOoooo DARK . I wish was brighter lol 😝 Oh ps, excuse my mumbling. That job jab I was talking came from our research professor 👩🏫 in lecture . I still have since last year my epson eh-tw7100 which although it's not laser, has 3000 lumens and a great picture even in daylight. And it's cheaper than the 1800 tv... And before that I had a 1100 $ sanyo plv-z700 since 2011 always with a 100'' screen when the tvs were VERY small for that price... Although the tvs are catching up i believe the logistics involved and the reflections are cumbersome. The only tv I would buy would be the Samsung frame because its matte finish and doesn't reflect any light. But these are much more expensive than this hisense. Btw I love your reviews! Keep going!

I'm happy you love your TW7100, but if you saw it night to the Pro 2 or PX3-Pro you'd be blown away by how much better they are. The issue with Matte screens on TVs is that they spoil the black level and there's some serious pushback to some manufacturers using matte on their higher end screens.

@@TheHookUp biggest reason I am a fan of Projectors over a Flat Panel TV. So many people ignore the glare ruining the experience on a Flat Panel TV. I'm almost 10 years in to owning a projector and I still haven't looked back. 120" in the living room and Ultra Short Throw projectors in each bedroom. The ONLY flat panels I have are matte computer monitors. Great video. I'm a fan for sure. You also included logistics. So many reviewers have to unbox their 110" Flat Panel TVs outside because they can't get it through the door in the box. Projector screens can be rolled up or broken down, then rolled up and easily moved to the new house/location. Keep up the great work with these videos!
