We've had the yurt through one winter so far and have managed to get up often enough to remove the snow before it gets to be unmanageable. Hopefully we have the same lucjk this season.

Never said we lived in the tiny cabin. Always said it was a recreational property. Please don't misquote me. This is just another project/dwelling we have on the property like the cabin and trailer. Wow, that's a great Yurt..! Authentic is so beautiful, love it. You have 304 square feet, that's huge compare to the cabin. Great space for the kids and dog when its getting real winter. I hope the stove is big enough to get it warm enough. Question, is it allowed to let it stand there whole year? If they see this (the law) as a tent, you probably can just let it there the whole year, what would be great. Love to hear the rest of the story, take care, Regards, Tony.

It's great to have the space I will admit. We've just passed our one year anniversary with the Yurt on the property so we had it up and running for the polar vortex we experienced and I was amazed at how well it was able to keep warm and maintain the heat with just that little stove. As it is by definition a nomadic structure it is non-permanent and therefore shouldn't be a concern for the Rural Municipality. A year in and no word from them, so I think we're safe. Tine will tell. I just came across your channel through cabinet build video. I thoroughly enjoyed your narration, soothing voice simple but incredible cinematography then decided to binge watch your other content. Then this one came out I have to say I am more than impressed that I almost had a heart attack from excitement because I am Mongolian and I’m pretty sure I would have had a heart attack If I saw it in person in North America. When building a cabin, you have to keep it under 107 square feet or you have to get a building permit. Does the yurt fall outside this rule? Can the municipality have an issue with it?

The yurt is a nomadic structure by definition. It's not permanent because it's basically a tent. Therefore, no permit required. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Have been looking at Groovy Yurts myself and stumbled across your lovely channel. Would you mind going into a little more detail on the stove you're using, keeping it warm, and whether your toono is one of the upgraded ones, or the basic half-open one? Thanks!

The stove is just a small to medium sized wood stove with a standard size flue (6" I think). Nothing special. We do have an short insulated pipe section as it exits the toono through one of the windows. That window is simply replaced with a steel sheet for the chimney to pass through. The stove heats the Yurt up in a matter of hours even in the coldest of temps (-45ish is the coldest we've endured out there) and will maintain that heat without issue so long as the stove keeps cooking. We are in sub-arctic Canada in one of the coldest provinces and we use it throughout the winter very comfortably. In warmer winter temps (-10 to -20c) you can let the fire die and have the yurt hold a steady temp for up to around 4 hours before it starts to drop noticeably. The toono is a standard one I believe and we have acrylic panels cut and screwed to each window frame individually so they are all removable in the summer. I have a couple openings that I've stapled screens into as we get a lot of mosquitoes and flies where we live in the summer. The yurt stays cool in the summer so long as you shade the toono with the Urgh or top insulated cover which is also how we keep the rain and snow out. But the natural venturi that the yurt creates draws cool air from the ground and expells the warm air out the toono easily and effectively. We did also buy the Top Cover (Urgh) in Clear Vinyl, but I was not impressed with the design as a replacement for the quilted Urgh cover as it is too short in the skirt and the wind makes a great sail out of it and allows rain to blow under it easily, but it is still useful as a secondary way to keep the rain and moisture (snow) from seeping in where the felts meet the toono so long as the heavy urgh is holding it down. Hope this helps. We love the yurt, but it is a living breathing structure and does require one to live in it often and maintain it's existence unlike a cabin or other solid western structure. That said, it's got a presence that is unbeatable when entering the space or waking to the sun through the toono.

Water we haul in mostly although we do collect rain water in the summer months for planting. Hands get washed in the sink or a wash basin, baths are in the lake nearby or we can shower in a camper trailer we use as a summer kitchen and guest house. Thanks for watching!

What does seven walls mean?

The 7 walls refer to the lattice walls that make up the structure. They fold up for nomadic life and so are a uniform size. The size of the yurt is determined by the number of walls to tie together. In this case, 7. I'll be detailing the parts of the yurt and it's construction in another video soon. Stay tuned.
