Looking forward to the ideas and construction moving forward. Proof you don't require a mega layout to give hours of modeling enjoyment. It is truely in the details!

Thank you. I think larger layouts are fine but the size is often over-rated. The shelf layout feels huge to me because the signature scene can be very immersive. If you are going to let the proverbial "Genie out of the Bottle" why not contain it some so as to raise the bar and still sleep comfortably at night?

I am impressed with your ability to use the word "optimistic" and "sawzall" in the same sentence as it relates to a model railroad!! ;-) I'm trying my hardest to be the exception to the dangers you warn about. I'm absolutely guilty of having a grandiose plan in my head, I can "see" a lot of my finished railroad and admittedly I'm not sure how (Exactly) I'm going to get there but I do have a plan. I'm just now about two years into that plan with no burnout in sight. I enjoy the journey almost as much as the finished product... the problem solving. Thanks Boomer, always inspirational!

Yep, he just forgot to put a cormoran on one of these piers.....eating a salmon ! An other crazy but colorful salmon. The best point in that video is, keep everything removable. For maintenance photo sessions, just for refreshing change and always no matter size or shape, have a movable layout. What you do with your 6'X40' 2000 pounds plaster monument if one day you must move it. You call 10 of your friends to realise that it will only go out as planter chunks in garbage bags. 15 years of your life ! Smart Boomer😊

I did map out the trackplan on my final o gauge trainboard, an18ft by 22 ft, inside open oval space 5ft by 8 ft. creation. But I gave no thought or time to space required for hills, valleys , rock outcrops, forests and trees, walls, fences, rivers. Im 3 years in, way underestimated the time to build the trainboard and install track . only able to run my trains twice in 3 years. Badly regret not mapping out the scenery plans. So, now I see my error, moving forward. I should have done the outer loop, decorate, run trains, do the inner loop, decorate, run trains do the parking tracks, decorate run trains,do the elevated loop, decorate, run trains. Now you helped me understand. I'm still badly overwhelmed, but I'm sure you would say break it down into pieces, small steps, and enjoy the journey

Looking awesome all together now! The pilings look great. One day you could build a diorama of a barge, maybe a tug too; sitting in the same color water you have on the layout then build a cart to put it on that would match the level of the barge slip on the layout. You could possibly use it like a staging yard. Put cars on it to be delivered to the layout, switch them out with the train, load the cars to be taken away, then roll the barge cart away till its time to interchange cars with the barge again. Not sure if you have the room needed or if the layout is configured for that to work but it's just a though. Maybe when you finish the entire layout and run it for awhile you might want to build this barge cart and redo the edge of the layout at the barge slip to accept this so called barge cart, that is if you get antsy to do some more building one day down the road. You've got plenty building to keep you busy for now.

Dear Boomer, love how the pilings are coming to life. Absolutely agree on the added value of barge slip. Where the model meets beyond the horizon of the imaginary. Anyhow, on the negative space, plus the transition next to Axton, just maybe, maybe it’s an idea to model part of the Alex Fraser bridge. Not on the prototypical side, but on the left hand side of Axton. On a slight angle, I humbly think it will further the illusion of depth in the particular corner. Also it will naturally enhance the illusion of the road which connects to the parking lot. Further, it will be another feature connecting the model beyond the horizon. Last but not least, really like the idea of the retractable foam part for the transition scene. Definitely will use that on my layout. Have been experimenting with such pop outs. Even with scraps of cheap pieces and cutoffs from packaging styrofoam. A little spray foam in between the crevices and cling film between the layers and the different pieces fit like a glove. Great vid. Very much appreciate what you’re showing all of us!!

I have thought about the Alex Fraser bridge feature. Many visual challenges to overcome as one moves from left to right. It works from a forced perspective, but fails from another. I have not out ruled it though, because there are only solutions right? ;-)

What a fantastic summary Boomer. I do my best to keep up with all your productions. I will be changing from N to HO in the hopes of providing me with a scale easier to handle, model and view. My new layout (shelf) will have similar dimensions to what you have built to date. Can you speak to the size of the turnouts you built? And possibly the radius of your broad curve at the Axton corner? Also very curious what you finally decided to use regarding turnout controls. As always - my most sincere thanks for all you share with us - tangibly and otherwise. M
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
All the turnouts are #8-10 from "FastTrack's" free templates: www.handlaidtrack.com/track-templates Most are curved with a minimum radius of 38 inches. The widest is 42 inches. It's best to download the free paper templates to lay-up the curves in my experience. The prototypical curve is far more important to me than extra tangent. The turnout controls most likely will be manual. I have not decided on the style yet, since they hold position right now with out them.

@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
You need a basic table saw. Take two pieces of cheap 1/8 door skin (wood panels) or equivalent, a little larger than the PC board. Spray 3M adhesive on back side of PC board and glue to panel. Do the same with the other side. Basically sandwich the PC board between the scrap panels. Then run it through a table saw (with a zero clearance plate) with a push stick - carefully to the width you desire. You use a zero clearance plate so the strips don't fall down into the table slot. Cut all the strips you need and then peel off the wood panels from the PC board. If you have trouble, soak the strip in Isopropyl Alcohol and they will fall off. Cheers..

I'm curious how the barge dock works exactly. The tip of it seems to be able to articulate up and down a tiny bit, but it's fairly short and couldn't move too far up or down without introducing a very steep grade. The rest of it it looks fixed to the concrete supports so can't move. I've seen docks like this but only on the ocean where tides can be pretty big, this is along a river so not as much tide differences to account for?
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
The forward Ramp Section pivots up and down with hydraulic rams which I have not installed yet. The ramp section is hinged at the center concrete slab to adjust for tides and to keep out of the water at high tide. The tides can be severe here as well.

Hi boomer you mentioned planning , a lot is over looked at the very start of building a layout long before we even put pen to paper. Firstly the building or room you are going to be creating this masterpiece needs to comfortable enough to work in summer and winter. Four things I would definitely do No 1 Air-conditioning No 2 Insulation and 3 Lighting No Four future proofing the layout eg if you decide to move make sure you can dismantle and take the lay out to the new location Speaking from experience I've done none of these things ,put it done to impatience ,there's nothing more unmotivating working in the hot summer and cold winter months. Yes it all cost money to do that but its worthy getting these four things right from the start ,you can always buy those Locos later on rather than sitting on the shelf. Meanwhile I'm going to make my way up to the no air-conditioned garage where its colder than a witches kiss and work on my layout. What can I say , you live and learn !
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
Being comfortable is mandatory for me especially as one grows older. I built several layouts and many models in an unheated garage in the past. The very thought of that makes me shudder. I subscribed yesterday and have watched some of your videos. I've been weathering rolling stock with washes made from acrylic craft paint and windshield washer fluid over a matt lacquer base. However, I'm eager to try washes made from Vallejo Model Air and water as you have used. My era is circa 1962 so the weathering isn't as severe as these days, but even mild weathering makes such a difference. Also, I've been painting trucks with what's left of my Polly S stock, but that will soon be gone. Do the Tamiya XF series paints adhere to the Derlin sideframes reasonably well? Do you use a base coat on them? Finally, my layout is HO but only 6 x 1 feet, so I find your layout very inspirational. Thanks for sharing all your hard work and great skills. Cheers from Wisconsin!
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the sub!. Delrin plastic will always be a problem if you plan handle the subject. I use Tamiya on Delrin Plastic applied with the airbrush. Then I dull coat. The trick is to apply the paint heavy enough as a jacket clinging to the Delrin shape - and then, try not to handle it if you can avoid it. You can get "prep" paint for Delrin, Unfortunately, it builds up too thick when the part or surface is small and detailed. Cheers.

@@boomerdiorama Thanks, Boomer. I will give Tamiya a try. I hand paint trucks with the wheelsets in to avoid any flexing after the paint is on. I also do it in steps to avoid contamination of the bearings. Cheers.

@@andrewpalm2103 Yes. Contamination of the bearing with paint can be a problem. It can cause the dreadful "lurching" at slow operations. I usually mask off the inside journals when I spray them. Thank you Wade! Remember when it all started? You clipped me in the mouth when I was ten years old during a boxing match, and I promised I wouldn't tell mother if you gave me all your models. She found out, my lip healed, and I kept all the models anyway. I never stopped building models since that day thanks to you . . . lol. Cheers ~ Boomer!

Boomer I like your methodology, it’s a shame to ruin all your hard work let alone the costs. You should write a book👍

Hi , I like to keep my modules to 2 foot by 6 foot , makes it easy to get though doors. how about a trailer loading in the parking lot. Now get outside and enjoy this planet.
@boomerdiorama2 жыл бұрын
Yes. 2' by 6' is ideal. I thought of this. In hindsight, I could have made the break at the beach-head off the approach abutment. The weather here sucks right now - still in winter. Furthermore, once the sun goes down hyperthermia sets in . . . lol.

@@jamesbraxton6132 That's nice for around here. They say two more weeks of rain and then, July / August should be brutal. Great weather to watch paint dry . . . lol.😜

Boomer, now that the site office is in place and there are some operations are taking place, you might want to prioritize the addition of the honey pot so there are no accidents along this section of track.
