Hey Jack, Important question if you don't mind taking the time to answer. I noticed a large majority of my blueprints stopped working after the update. I'm concerned because I spent a lot of time on some of these blueprints and don't want to lose them. Do you maybe know what caused that? (For reference it tells me something along the lines of "That space is already being used" even in an empty area.)

Hey! They did a sneaky block update. The Willis ducts are now taller so if you turn them side ways you can crouch through them. I only found out because I use the Willis door grate mod which now doesn't fit!

With the increased power demand of these proto tech blocks it feels like a miss not to have a new reactor or power plant of some sort though this does leave a lot of room for future proto tech blocks

I would argue that the power system (especially in late game) badly needs rebalancing as power management is basically a non-issue you can just forget about once you have a reactor. I think adding more power-hungry blocks and an upgraded battery was a step in the right direction that I'd like to see more of. We already have some pretty OP power generation blocks in my opinion.

@@Catatonic2789 I think that's a fair point, they certainly could have scaled up the power consumption on the refinery, jump drive of the prototech blocks but also increased their efficiency and output. The jump drive for example is worth about 3 regular jump drives but we still have people out here that need to stack them up to 20 or more just to jump a reasonable distance with large ships which also forces you to need multiple large reactors to compensate. The thruster despite being over twice the size is still only 2x the power output of a large hydrogen thruster. The scaling and balancing does need work all over the place. I feel like prototech could have ventured into the realm of fusion as well, nuclear reactors could have been modified to need cooling from water or other sources so many ways to go with it.

I feel like a proto tech reactor would be super expensive but it eats through uranium a lot slower than normal reactors with a 1.25x boost in power, however it’s only found in the most high tech ground facilities.

Unfortunately people are already reporting that the claim grid feature is not working and even in games with no PCU limit they are getting errors saying limit reached and even after grinding down, hacking and verifying ownership the items will refuse to merge block onto anything else and will only be fixed by copy pasting.

The set value and execute commands for physics blocks on top of the multiple toolbars for all action blocks is super awesome, now I don’t necessarily need a timer block in order for a sensor to do multiple things, and it’s a lot easier to set an angle without an event controller

Yeah, I agree. A prototech assembler should definitely not sound like it's just got regular assembler machinery inside of it. I think that if they have the time, they should go and update the sounds on them.

Seems very cool all around, a Great addition to the game. As for the drill , personally I don't care if it has less capacity than a combination of the regular drills , the new one looks way cooler.

The capacity of the standard drills is pretty broken anyways. One of those drills can hold as much as 1.5 small cargo containers and that's nuts to me. I abuse this to my advantage all the time don't get me wrong, but it's clearly unrealistic.

I will never understand why so many people in the Space Engineers community are against the idea of shields. As someone who enjoys building stuff for the looks rather than the practicality I have many ships that would die immediately in combat because I went for something lightweight and capable of in atomo and space travel, a shield generator would make provide so much more creative freedom since you wouldn't need to pick between using lightweight blocks and having no protection or using heavy blocks but being too heavy for atmospheric flight unless you add a bunch of extra thrusters. I think a good workaround would be to make the shield generator a prototech block so it's endgame content and make it function similar to the jump drive where the heavier the ship the less effective it is. This would really help promote it as a way of giving lightweight ships some protection and have it require a decent amount of time to recharge once the shield has been broken.

@@MAXHALO369 the if they’re complaining about lack of realism, they should be talking about the jump drive that also doesn’t exist or the fact that you somehow can build a refinery by sitting in one spot with a welder and it just magically. Everything goes in place anyone using realism as as a reason for not adding shields they need to look at the game

I want to see two ships go head to head and rip holes in each other and win or lose based on how well designed the internals laid out and Armour is placed. I dont want to sit there and trade shots with a glowing blue orb until one gives up, it takes the fun out of it for me. Not sure about other people but that's my perspective

My normal refineries have a yield rate of 200% with all slots containing yield modules. So basically, yield is 1:1 between a prototech and normal upgraded refinery, however the speed is much higher for the prototech, so it's still technically an upgrade. Infract, as I'm writing this, my refineries are still busy processing a heck ton of ores. The speed upgrade would help.

I fought the generic Factorum Warship and it's a BEAST! The P-Tech components like the thrusters, batteries, and gyros mean it can carry more armor and dakka per ton of ship. Very tough. I had to take out all of the guns on one side and then attack with a grinder. The whole update pack is $5.00 USD and VERY worth it!

Gonna be real, while I knew prototech was a centerpiece for this update and it looks real nice, what I've always wanted was some proper PvE. The Reavers mod is unfortunately a bit clunky in my opinion and though I didn't expect anything super complex from Keen on that front, I'd hoped for something a bit more involved than spawning a few drones/ships on a few select encounters... so I'm a bit disappointed.

I'm mostly curious about the changes about rotors/hinges/pistons which allow you to set actions. As playing on PS4, I have no access to scripts and thus can't have a button to "reset" a hinge/rotor to a default setting. I believe the patch notes said something in the lines of this being a vanilla option. Ps: I've discovered your colony wars. Just finished the earth like season and just started with the red planet season. I truly hope you still make this as it's amazing content!

Some of the testing I've seen in other channels shows that new prototech drill actually extracts more ore for how much it drills, some sort of efficiency bonus over multiple small drills, then the durability, it's a tank :D (saw someone turn it into a ramming missile....that seems a waste, but it was shockingly effective, and it didn't break xD)

The prototech drill is more about efficiency than capacity, while it only has 50 thousand liters, it uses the same power as a singular large grid drill

I encountered a Factorum listing post/Space station which had shields that I could not get past. Was on creative mode, but that fact hasn’t prevented me from entering bases on asteroids.

There are three auxiliary stations around the listening post. The shield will go down after you take out all three of the auxiliary stations.

11:45 I'm still hoping that we eventually get helm / console blocks that are built into the slab blocks for some variation in bridge levels, Currently to have a 2 tiered bridge you end up with a star destroyer style where everyone is either in pits below the commanders or it needs to be bogger to not have it feel cramped, I want to get the easy slope of Voyager's bridge or the Enterprise refit's without needing actual stairwells to get between the levels,

Does the inset connector have attachment points on 5 sides instead of 3? Does it still only have one conveyor connection opposite the docking ring? Is it airtight?

These are questions I had to; the large grid inset connector has 2 conveyor connection points, 1 opposite the connector itself and one on the side. It is airtight as well! The small grid large connector has 1 large conveyor connection on bottom, 4 small conveyor connections around the sides, assuming it is also airtight but I don't even try that with small grids....yet. The small inset connector has 2 small conveyor connections, 1 bottom 1 side, and like the other two looks solid for airtight. I did test the airtightedness of the large grid, so that one absolutely can be used in a slimmer hangar build than what we used to *have* to do vanilla.

i agree i think some new sounds would of been really cool as we modernized the look maybe modernize the sounds i hope the frame we need is not to hard to acquire or the encounters are not over done to much like FROSTBITE this update is a game changer i really looking forward to seeing buils i wonder the bigger thruster can we use that to get out of atmosphere like hydrogen thruster thanks JACK awesome review as always

As far as lasers go, i think they should have added them for prototech, as well as a new armor block type that while the laser is good against lets say heavier armor by melting it, you could have lets say a ceramic armor block set that doesnt take damage from lasers, but also has a very low damage threshold for every other weapon type and just gets obliterated by missiles. Basically gives another option for offense and defense for us players to enjoy, and shoot. They could even have added prototech armor blocks that are prohibitevly expensive to make a ship out of, but are basically effective enough to hold up to kentic and laser damages

That wouldn’t make the game balanced, because you’ll have to choose against ceramic armour for your ship just to defend against a little tiny laser and get obliterated by anything above a rifle turret, or go for the normal armour (light/heavy) and risk getting melted by as mentioned before a little TINY laser. If the laser was only a point defense weapon and can only damage small grid light armour blocks used on fighters I’d agree.

Adding lasers would not mean that shields would necessarily be added. We have weapons grade lasers today. I think the trade off would come with the bulk and power drain. Maybe they could add a heat mechanic or just require that a certain number of radiators (vents 🙄) be present in order to fire or to improve fire rate, giving those blocks a purpose. There's really no feasible method to block light with a force field, anyway. Blocking high speed electrically neutral projectiles with a field is a similar fantasy.

I JUST had my first encounter with the enemy capital ship with my capital ship.... It.... It did not go well.... Thankfully my jump drive was one of the few things left active so I managed to jump back to base and now I have the lovely task of reevaluating my primary fighting vessel... Ugh...

New sounds to the prototech blocks, I could see that being an amazing addition they missed out on, but I guess it is what it is. Another thing I don't get is the new turret, it has 3 barrels but uses only the top barrel? Don't see the logic in that one sadly

This update did, in fact, add energy shields to the game, they're just neither particularly strong or player useable, as only a particular Factorium encounter has them.

If I'm being honest I'm a little underwhelmed by this update. While I'm happy with all the additions. I'm disappointed, because there are a lot of things the community has been asking for that it seems they just keep teasing they might do and then don't. Example small grid gravity generator. Since the introduction of a lot of blocks that are making small ships gone wild more possible why haven't they added it? The community has been asking for it for years.

I love most of the contact update but the g menu changes made thing worse. So many Groups were broken up i can no longer fit all the blocks into my tool bars. I've used the same tool bar set up for years and rarely ever opened the g menu. it doesn't have to make sense that merg blocks are with the pistons they just have to be there where they have always been. a line of text explaining the block groups and the 9 slots in each of you nine tool bars would have been a much better way of helping new players figure it out. alienating the 4000 hour plus guys was an interesting choice.

Yeah sadly I can't even access that new DLC sadly and my game didn't even update at all do I have no new blocks no new anything I bought the contact DLC I have it installed and everything earlier I had to uninstall it just to see if that would work I left it alone for a bit and later I reinstalled it and no still nothing

it was a disappointing update and have gotten use to expecting this kind of behavior from Keen. Already tired of youtubers making it seem like the refinery is so much better, with modules normal refinery is 530 proto is 550 stop making seem so much better. Took them years to finally give us some proper small grid blocks for small grids builds. the proto blocks are only a snails speed faster, new thruster engine is garbage just a cosmetic change new cargo block hold less than it's counter part Small proto battery is not even worth building Keen has never had a sense of balance.

We definitely need beam and laser weapons in space engineers period, it's just an obvious progression of technology, I mean seriously we have access to jump drive tech how is that possivle without having knowledge of how atoms and dark matter or antimatter work, or even look at real life today, we have plasma generation from controlled fusion reactors, this stuff isn't far fetched, we have lasers and military laser tech already, that is being used to disable missiles and other various vehicles and objects, we need laser and beam weapons in space engineers, we got ion thrusters, it's literally nothing to pulse an ion charge over a distance to hit something, so yes albeit the new contact upgrade is totally awesome it definitely misses the mark in various aspects, energy weapons should already be a base game technology at the very least laser type weapons, from laser turrets to laser drills both handheld mining laser drill to ship laser drills, hell I would he totally happy with an ultrasonic weapon and drill such as real life tech for disintegrating gall stone and other various materials, 2024 and we're in the starting age of energy based weapons and tools being available to the public and military, come Keen you know you want to, so lets do this finally, I understand if coding something like in is a bit of lug to do but you already have the basics and foundation to use to do so...Also energy shields would be nice as well, whether it be a simple projection shield or whatever would be very nice and aesthetically pleasing, modders have done it, you can too, it's your baby, your game, you made it, why be outdone by modders lol??? Please give us a great Xmas gift this year with energy based weapons and tools and maybe actual shields as well so we can build insane ships like star trek and such🙌🙌🙌🙏🙏🙏👌👌👌
