There are so many comments insulting this guy and predicting his certain injury. It's amazing but somehow he is handling a HEAVY saw that will easily wear out even the most rugged of men in a day's work and he is not too young so somehow he managed to stay safe all these years. Maybe, just maybe, he knows what he's doing. It's easy to criticize but I'm guessing most that did here have never even run a chainsaw that had a bar that was more than 24"...

He makes Pual Bunoin look like a (boy) scout. All you who want to talk about safety gear? He's not wading through brush, that 100 lb saw is not going to kick back, he's not going to inadvertently lay that 42 inch bar on his leg, AND that log isn't going to take an unpredictable turn. GOOD GRIEF! Give the man a little credit. He's lived longer than most of you will, and you don't even own a chain saw.

not much demand for veneer by us at the moment, we milled this on our band saw into 2" boards, then sold it for a nice profit to a building contractor who used them for floorboards. Where we live there is a lot of old buildings, old black and white cottages all would be about the 200 year old mark, all made from traditional english oak, a lot of restoration work is carried out so theres a fair demand for oak boards and beams, get a nice price for it too, thanks for watching

For quick/small jobs that you can do down low and angle your body out of the firing zone I wouldn't wear much, but holding a massive chainsaw above my head while looking up into the bits of bark, sawdust and smoke flying into my eyes...I'd wear the goggles :p, I don't see why people make such a fuss over it....is it a fashion thing? even just the diesel in your eyes wouldn't be fun

I've worked with chainsaws for over 15 years and it never ceases to amaze me how little or no safety equipment these people wear, make no misate no matter how competent you think you are with these types of tools they WILL take your fucking arm off, I guess he thinks he doesn't need to protect himself until something happens I think if you make a video like this with a tool that powerful it is your responsibility to be as a safe as possible for the people watching seeing him struggle to lift that running saw up onto that log wearing jeans and a waistcoat made me cringe great vid though!

Knowledge of kickback zones and kickback situations will keep most people safe from catastrophic injury. Not running a saw after 8 hrs of operation is another way to keep the business end from your body. I have 13 yrs under my belt, Logging, Wildland firefighter, Tree climber and small business owner involving tree's. I have never been cut! And the Fellers, Delimbers, or Sawyers i have trained were not cut under my watch. Crashing through the dark woods, on slope while your chaps hang up? FUN!!

If you watch closely there's a scene cut just as he goes to pull the cord, then it jumps to a different scene and he pulls, so I bet it was already previously started and hence started first time as it was already warm :) I keep my small Stihl in good condition but it usually takes 2-4 pulls to start from cold, I'm guessing that's normal?
@davidhoover8877
@davidhoover8877 11 жыл бұрын
***** Sure, I could deal with 5 pulls as long as they would start. It just chaps my tail that I am the only one who can start my Stihl Chainsaws and Concrete Saw. Its like if you don't know how each one reacts after each pull then you will never get it started. I will say once they have been warmed up then they are a force like no other but the Husky cuts just as well without having to treat them like a bitch that's mad at you . Also, I appreciate you letting me know about the warm up or short run of my original message regarding the cold starts.

With that Stihl blowing blue ( oil rich ) smoke like that will usually mean that this engine will run for years. Today's saws with new oils and upwards of 100:1 oil mixture means they are 'cheaper' to operate but I'm betting they won't last as long as the one shown here. So where's the money saving ? Safety first is not something that this guy pays much attention to,....Is he wearing safety glasses, what about work gloves, and I noticed , as a lot of you did' that the film stops and starts without then with ear protection. But in spite of all this,.he's got one helluva pile of fire wood there. Good video,.I enjoyed watching that .

First off, name a new saw that runs higher than 50:1. I work a job where I am in charge of a shop of ~60 saws that get run hard daily all spring/summer/fall and were made from the late '80s to mid-2013, and the design isn't much different, with the exception of stronger bearings and housings in the newer saws. (in regards to build quality) I also have a heck of a lot of time running and wrenching on saws older than that. Don't get me wrong, I like the old muscle saws like the 090, 797, 895, etc., but if you saw what hell I put a Stihl 440 (with a lot of power mods like a 460 top end that's ported, polished, and decked, ported muffler, unlimited carb, advanced ignition) through and then tell me that: 1. you would want to run a saw from the '80s that makes similar power alongside me for 16 hours a day in stupid steep ground, (BTW, we'd be talking about an 056) and 2. that the bearings and piston would last anywhere near as long due to the inferior air filtration of the saws from the '80s. We put an absolutely stupid number of hours on our saws, and have only 1-2 bottom end failures a year, again, out of 60 saws being run. Hard. Ask a pro logger, hotshot firefighter, or arborist whether he would rather run a Stihl 440/Husky 372 or a Stihl 038/Husky (Whatever they made before the 272), and I guarantee that guys that make their living with a chainsaw in their hands will tell you newer saws are made just fine. I guarantee that 090 in the video has less hours of runtime on it than at least half of the saws in my shop at work. That saw might have seen a fair bit of use in its very early days, but I can assure you that since 1980, saws over 100cc have spent more years sitting on the shelf without cutting one tree than years they do get off the shelf. Finally, oil. Yeah, the stuff's slicker now than it was back then. We've figured out how to make it handle high temperatures without breaking down. You don't have to run it at 16:1. Means you don't have to change spark plugs (almost ever) and that there's no carbon buildup to clean out of the exhaust port, or out of the spark arrestor screen in the muffler port. Plus, with 2.4 ounces of Stihl oil (enough for 1 gallon of gas at 50:1) going for $6.50, it sure isn't "cheaper" than the 2 stroke oils of decades past. All your arguments are invalid, you speak of things you fear, but have no first hand knowledge of.
@tek9tim
@tek9tim 11 жыл бұрын
jago18777 - I wasn't talking about arborist saws, I have no experience with them. I work in the woods..I was talking about the real saws in the 70-90cc range. Either way, we are in somewhat violent agreement. You say the 020T or the MS200T are good saws. I say the 044/440, 046/460, and 066/660 are good saws. These were not made in the '80s. The points I was arguing were 1. new saws don't run 100:1, nor do they need 32:1 like they used to. Oil is better now. and 2. Pro saws of a respectable displacement made in the '90s and 2000s are likely more reliable than saws from the '80s and before. Especially in that the true long term wear parts such as the bearings are of higher quality now, are lubricated better because of superior oils, and are exposed to less grit due to superior air filtration. I intentionally made no mention of any Stihl saw that starts with anything less than a 4, nor mention of anything that ends with a 1. Saws smaller than the 044/440 are not made nearly as well, and the irreverseable eco features of saws such as the 441 make it much less powerful and heavier than the saw it replaced. Not my cup of tea. In review. my point of view is that saws newer than the '80s are awesome. The caveat is that saws newer than 2012 (when they discontinued both the 440 and 460) are generally junk. (except the 660 and 880, they're still good)

I'm not a bitch, but I react like a a bitch because linking me mentioning safety gear and gender is not right, not relevant even. I worked with chainsaws professionally during 3 years. We wore all necessary safety gear and followed strict procedures. During 10 years, and with 40 people handling chainsaws, zero accidents happened. I never even brushed the safety trousers with my saw, but it was no question wether to wear it or not. A friend of mine, a strong guy btw, was handling a chainsaw during his free time without safety trousers and he seriously hit his upper leg. It just takes seconds.

@KEVSONNOSVEK That means it has metal in it. I think the iron in metal reacts with the starch or iodine in the tree. Most trees show metal some don't.

This is just a guess and I am probably dead wrong but I think it may be one of those old Ford tractors from the 1950's or early 60's. It's been modified so much it's hard to tell. With those if you kept the oil changed and other basic maintenance they ran for years and years. You occasionally see them at antique tractor shows.

totally awesome video.. I enjoy watching it,.. I'm happy for this guy....wish I had a stihl 090 like that and my own beast diesel tractor and a farm.....I don't care about his safety gear... he already made the video..... most people watching this arent young children surfing for chainsaw videos.... they're lumberjacks or arborists like me who appreciate the video for what it is..... gear or no gear.... GOOD For You BUDDY!!!!
