The United States is so afraid of China that it uses a ban on the import of chips as its only means of competition. How does the United States want to become great again if it has become a third-world country that is unable to cope with the fires in California and loses its own military aircraft every week due to the fault of the pilots? Trump, you're a great guy, but how are you going to make the United States great again?

The true issue for Big Tech isn’t that DeepSeek is a Chinese company, it’s that it’s a free open source AI that’s the issue. How are you going to convince users to upgrade to your $20 a month full version of AI when the competitor’s full version is free and is just as powerful as yours? How are you going to convince other companies to pay to use your AI model when they can use DeepSeek’s open source model for free? It’s not just DeepSeek though, ByteDance is also developing their own AI. Whether or not it ends up inside TikTok remains to be seen

America needs to open their eyes and realize that no sanctions will ever contain the way of the market. It will just buy you time. It's like when America tried to stop the surge of Japanese cars in the 80s, the market eventually said the final word.

It is not the models that worry Nvidia... it is the technique in which Deepseek used to finetune another base model. It shows that models can be finetuned to achieve higher performance in a more efficient way that does not require as much resources as Nvidia wants to sell. Deepseek basically published a paper explaining how they did it and open sourced that stuff so others can build on their research or finetune their models. And if smaller models can achieve the same performance as larger ones, you don't need high-end data center GPUs (expensive!) to run the inference side of things; the smaller models can run on cheaper, consumer-grade hardware.

China can make those themselves. They have SMIC. They have problems with the new stuff because everyone in the industry (including the Americans, Koreans and Taiwanese) use photo lithography machines made by some Dutch company and the US pressured the Netherlands into not selling them to China (making the Netherlands lose billions by the way). But as with this the Chinese will find a solution in due time and they'll be making high tech chips themselves (they already did one for the Huawei phones, we'll see if that's scalable)

The bigger problem is that the chip ban is forcing China to make its own chips, and if we look at the other industries where they're "forced" to make their own stuff (solar PV, wind, nukes, EVs), it'll take about 5 years for them to dominate the market.

DeepSeek’s monthly plan for its AI is *40 times* cheaper than OpenAI’s standard price. This suggests that big U.S. tech companies may be grossly inefficient or overcharging consumers far more than what newer, better alternatives in the global market can now offer. Affordable options like DeepSeek and other emerging low-cost open source AI tools are great choices for Americans looking to save money on their AI usage, especially now that budgets are tight for many people. This is legitimately game changing. I’m beginning to understand why DeepSeek is being a called a “profound gift” to the entire world.

The US kneecaps China, so it has to use inferior and cheaper chips. Chinese companies still need to compete. So, in spite of having cheaper chips, they figured out how to create a better LLM that matches the US's- except it's cheaper. So you see what's causing the problem here.

Just wait to you guys find out about quantum computing. That will be the next great technological leap. China and the UK invest more money into this than the USA and it is government funded, but the USA research in this field is purely done by corporations like Google, IBM and NVIDIA. Whoever makes the breakthrough on this will control the world for the next 500 years, but because the USA research is done by corporations, they are looking more to make it a consumer product to monetise, rather than do the research to make the breakthrough and they are being left behind in this field by the Chinese and the British who are not constantly looking to monetise what they are trying to discover. Capitalism is actually hurting the USA in the tech field.

Spend $10million to develop, give it to the world for free as open source, wipe over $1 trillion off US Tech market cap. I'd say thats a pretty good ROI. And I can guarantee that the hedge fund that is funding Deepseek just made $billions by shorting NVIDIA stock.

@@koolapope yes but now the infrastructure is (financially) accessible to more companies, than the just the 3-4 huge ones. the latter will lose a lot of competitive advantages. what's the point of a company that can't afford a multi hundred million dollars investment but can afford $5M to get it's own in house infra to continue to pay those 4-3 (aka OpenAI etc.) to access theirs? and chip manufacturer like Nvidia, lose now but could still continue to win big if those new player companies decide to enter the infra game

OpenAI's revenue model hinges on HUMAN user subscriptions. If American consumers choose a cheaper, superior competitor like DeepSeek, then OpenAI's current business model could collapse, potentially signaling doom for other high-priced American AI companies. This is how markets work, though. Just like a company might offshore labor that is cheaper to be more cost-effective, American consumers can save money by using offshore AI solutions. It works *both* ways.

Yeah, it seems like these AI companies and the American government weren't interested in doing things the free market way while they had the monopoly on the best hardware. US companies lost a lot of stock value over this, maybe they will ban DeepSeek in the US in a panic next. It's starting to become clear that the US is not ready for overseas competition from rising superpowers and I'm a little worried that they will turn to aggressive militaristic measures to maintain the market capital of US companies.
