I grew up in Glendive Montana and have a bachelor's degree from MSU (1976). When I was in high school, Jim Oliver, one of my classmates did his science fair project using one of these plates. He placed one of these plates on an undeveloped X-Ray film cartridge that he borrowed from one of the doctors in town and left it there for several weeks. When the film was developed, there was a ghostly image of the plate on the film.

Interesting video Drew. Friends of mine have a reasonable collection of the orange Uranium Trioxide glazed cermic pottery. I have a green uranium glass saucer. I noticed in Australia now, that all this old glass and pottery is very hard to come by unless you pay premium prices. All the stuff you used to see in antique shops has been snaffled up. I have a small Autunite specimen in my mineral collection that glows bright green when i shine a UV light oin it. I keep it in a clear plastic display cube to avoid breathing any dust. The mineral form is interesting it looks like little swollen book pages. Keep the videos coming Drew.

It wasn’t long before you didn’t see these anymore! My wife had a thyroid growth, not cancer, and one of the questions they asked after the diagnosis was have you ever had your feet xrayed at a shoe store. The cyst was not cancer and had nothing to do with radiation at all. The-rays we received probably enhanced our immune system back then!

@caveone-365
@caveone-365 Жыл бұрын
I briefly heard about the lost source in Australia. Since it was cesium 137 I'm guessing a lost source from inside and old teletherapy head right? Usually that's where I see the cesium come from. Some idiot scraps an old teletherapy unit thinking they hit the 'mother load' and they're gonna make so much $. Usually they get like $30 in scrap and a big dose of some nasty exposure, usually killing them and others that are around it. Of course if some idiot breaks open the capsule and dumps the cesium all over it spreads quick and easily. These people don't understand what the trefoil sign means and as crazy as that sounds it's all too common. The Goiania 'accident' should've been more than enough to wake people up about the dangers of it, but apparently not. I believe it effected something like 40,000 people. Now if some terrorist is trying to construct a dirty bomb or something like that, it could get even worse. I'm guessing they weren't able to find the source capsule?? Probably got smelted in some foundry and the metal will probably be all over. Not the first time that has happened either. 🙄😔

More people should buy a Geiger counter and check their surrounding. Who knows, perhaps there is something radioactive hiding in a box under your bed or in the cabinet next to your bed or in your home office or wherever you stay for longer time. These things are yielding a small dose until you sleep on them for years. I had an old smoke detector stored next to my bed in a cabinet (2 feet from my body) and when I checked the radiation in my bed I realized it was a bit higher and that I had stored that old smoke detector in a stupid place.

I wonder what would happen if you flew into Heathrow with a radian plate? Is that it appears that the delays is much more reactive than the ore. I thought I’d share the story with you as well . In 1998 I was contracted to undertake a feasibility study to use a thermal spring to heat a hotel in Derbyshire, England.. the water rises from the ground at about 28°C however, there are two methods to heat water in the ground is thermal gradient and the other fissile decay . So I had to borrow a Geiger counter? And we had to abandon the project because the water was coming from fissile decay a bit reactive.

If you put radium powder in a ceramic glaze and then "fire" the glaze, would it give off toxic fumes?
@nefariumxxx
@nefariumxxx Жыл бұрын
Very likely and probably would exude / off-gas some radon over the years which tends to contaminate nearby surfaces (including plate itself). I wouldn't mess with radium powder because the contamination risk is much worse than uranium oxide which is used in the pottery glazes.
@RadioactiveDrew
@RadioactiveDrew Жыл бұрын
Yeah I wouldn't use radium for that. First off there's no real advantage to using it in a glaze. Uranium was used because of its super vibrant colors. Second radium takes a lot more work to extract from uranium ore and you only find about a gram per several tons of uranium ore.

Hey I’m down here in Cody Wyoming. Your most interesting part of the video was the second half giving more context and background to each piece or the explanation of why certain things were radioactive When you’re showing the radioactive readings and the geiger counter I know it sounds annoying but you need to say the number and make a display on the screen for us An emotional reaction to what you thought wow that was high or low or why it was higher or lower than you expected This is all of course if you want you to watch Time and recommendations to go out if you just enjoy making these videos for the heck of it I just enjoy watching them but from a fellow KZbinr Who is consulted with some of the top people in industry (on other acts this is my personal) thought I’d throw it out there People need - words and voices - overlays highlighting key points or data to visualize it - faces with emotions Pattern interrupts, try to not do more than 15 to 30 seconds of b roll with music at a time You can do lots of music and beer all but you need to have your face and overlay and reaction in between specifically in the first four minutes when KZbin highest counts watch rates and click through Even doing the video reverse with your talking about the items which was very good and interesting actually the whole thing was but from keeping attention standpoint you explaining the stuff is the most interesting and you actually looking at it is the evidentiary proof and B roll for us to feel like we’re there with you but we care about hearing your opinion and we will trust your reading with a quick B roll showing the reading we Morceau care about your reaction to that number reading because to be honest I don’t know what those numbers mean for the green uranium glass should’ve been higher or lower I’d like to hear what you thought about it

The fiestaware plant is insanely radioactive. I pickup there from time to time and it's amazing just how dangerous the ceramic scrap pit is. There's not a warning anywhere.

Oddly enough, the stuff is not considered highly radioactive because the half-life is so long with uranium oxide. Now if it had a short half life, that would be considered very radioactive. But yes, the counts per minute are impressive.
@americansmark
@americansmark Жыл бұрын
@@nefariumxxx that makes sense. I always thought it was the opposite. I thought short half lives were less dangerous. They did a remediation of the site in the 60s, but it wasn't very thorough because of the amount of contamination present and the technology at the time lagged behind.

@@americansmark Yeah, it goes against what one might think but the way it was explained to me is the shorter lived isotopes are giving off their energy in less time so it's a more .... concentrated effort. :)

@@americansmark Also good to remember that most of the activity from U-oxide is just low energy beta (electrons). Although there is a lot of it so the counts seem really impressive on geiger counters. When I did an informal test using 1/8" aluminum sheet metal to block the low beta... almost nothing makes it through. So, very little gamma emitted. Ballpark numbers were 75% low beta with approx 25% being alpha and just a smidgeon of gamma. Low beta is easily blocked by glass, wood, etc... and it cannot go through moisture very well either which is why it does not cause much harm to our own flesh unless you were sitting right on top of it all day long. Most people don't use Fiesta for seat cushions. I have seen some large collections of red/orange though. Probably best not to keep stacks of it right next to your easy chair for example. Potential eye issues/cataracts maybe long term.

I don't think anyone should worry about these items being in their shop or home. They are quite harmless. But its good to understand that these items are radioactive.

When my Mom died, I got her large collection depression glass. I know there’s Fiestaware and uranium glass in the basement. Just think, with a couple sheets of graphite, I can have my own Fiestaware Demon Core.

They used it before anyone really understood that it was radioactive. So they didn't think it was that big of a deal to use the material.
