Big tires look cool but do little other than please the eye. 95% of jeeps,4runners and other 4x4s on the roads see paved roadways only. UNLESS, you actually wheel your truck full time, keeping oversized tires on the truck full time just screams mall crawler. This is coming from someone whos 4runner goes from highways to rutted out farm roads and multiple creek crossings to check my cattle daily, the big tire thing is a waste of money as he mentioned My stock 265s have been more than adequate. I have never once thought i needed the extra ground clearance, thats why skid plates are equipped from the factory. The japanese who engineered these things got it right the first time. If you REALLY have to increase tire size id go no bigger than 285, and keep the tire thickness to a more "pizza cutter" narrow profile. This is all just my humble opinion and experience. But hey, i get it. The loaded down overlander trucks do look really sick, but in reality i chuckle every time i see one because i know its all for show. Quality rubber, correctly fitted for your application, oem diff lock, and a winch mounted from the factory bumper and youre going to be able to get in some super remote places and still get back home. Without breaking the bank or sacrificing reliablity and longevity either.

My 1st gen 4x4 tacoma is almost all stock with only a 1" lift that really only brings it back to OE height could make it anywhere that these decked out brolanders could go. I'd venture to say that there are trails that I can make it through stock where they struggle. Throw a set of good skids on and some AT and you're good to go.

Thanks, anybody thinking about lifting their trucks should watch this video. You do a good job explaining the pros and cons, and for me the cons far outweigh the pros! Ill be sticking to 265s on the oem alloys probably forever. These trucks are insanely capable in stock form. Nunerous videos confirm this and so do my own personal experiences. Maybe ill beef up to a 285 narrow one day, but that set would be for OHV trails only. 97 4runner sr5, 4x4 5speed manual. 204k still running great. I think the Toyota engineers were some of the best in the world. They figured things out better than I can about gearing and tires. Looking "cool" and performing correctly are two different things. Big tires dratically affect the engineering that went into these well designed vehicles.

This video made me content to enjoy my 4runner as it was engineered. I need the limited towing ability it has stock for my ski boat. Have been fantasizing about 1st gen Sequoia with 4.7 V8. Those things get only 13 - 17 mpg but they will tow and they can handle a lift and larger tires. My 4runner will squeak out 22 mpg towing a small off road tear drop. Good enough. 10 mpg costs a lot more money over the years. By the way, accumulation is my motto. I'd never sell my 4runner, but I may add to the family!

I tried some KO2 33s on my 3gen4R when I first lifted it 3in. I love how it looked and the stance was amazing BUT the power loss was not worth it for me. My 4R is my daily driver and I don't go off roading as much as I'd like to. I do want to supercharge it or do a motor swap eventually. I just got some 265/75/16 KO2s, I'm very happy with those. They may not be as wide or look as good but I love how it drives. I am going to get a new set of wheels eventually and get some 33s again so I can switch them when I want but not a priority right now. I'm about to do the tundra brake upgrade. Then in a few weeks I'm taking a road trip to Oklahoma.

If you are not mechanically inclined and lack deep pockets but only want to buy big tires because they look "cool" you're in for a rude awakening. I owned a K-5 4x4 with all of the bells and whistles for street and off roading. I could have bought a Bentley or Lambo with all of the the money I dropped on her. I started with tires and lifts as most do. The return on investment for tire modifications is really not worth the headaches. Listen to Pho Runner he is on point, but it's your world, I'm just living in it.

I have a supercharger with the urd 7th injector kit.. with my 33's my fuel mileage dropped to 7-10mpg. I do all my driving up around auberry/shaver.All mtn div I now dropped down to a 32 and have been getting around 10-12 mpg in the mountains. I have the 5 speed manual and push the truck hard, so the smiles per gallon are worth it.. with the supercharger the 33's and stock gears I could get the truck up to 90mph going up the 4lanes starting the pull after the first turn..with the 32's it almost cracks 100mph.

Regear before you supercharge. Power is not your problem it’s gearing. Bring your rpms back into the right rang thin supercharge if you still want to. The torque is still there just not where u want it.

We all get to do our own thing that we like and is custom for us. One may think it’s “stupid” or a waste of money but guess what? If it makes you happy (and you have the finances) do it. Don’t build your vehicle for other people. But I think that was kind of the point you were making about the giant tires and stuff right?

I have new coastal offroad bumpers I welded and put on my 02. I have 265/70R17 and already have to run my 4runner hard up the hills. Was going to go bigger tires. I also need to add lift kit and make some sliders. I must note that I get 17mph city and 22 hwy. Why much better than u maybe I drive different like, only run O/D over 45 and never while climbing mtns. Basically I will still have to regear. I am thinking that everything I have to do yet is not worth the cost.

The maximum tire size you can get away with safely is 265 70 r17. That’s already pushing the safety margins on suspension and drivetrain components slightly. Everything beyond that you’re asking for trouble if you’re driving hard. If you’re a very careful driver you may get away with 285 70 r17 but I wouldn’t want to run them off road. Too much wear and too much money down the drain.

Awesome video. You point out what most people don’t even consider, wear and tear on drivetrain combined with worse mileage. I have luckily found a 2000 Limited with factory rear locked and 4.30:1 stock gears. I want to do a mild suspension lift and maybe slightly larger tires but nothing that will require cutting, chopping up wheel wells. Can you recommend a 2 inch suspension, not spacer lift that will stiffen things up for riding better when loaded up? Thinking of eventually running a 23 Zero soft sided RTT that weighs 135 lbs and of course a rack, probably a Sherpa. I also like the stock aluminum rims so want to continue to run them. Thanks! Being tired of replacing warped rotors, plus my wife says my 3rd gen (98, 2WD) is too hard to stop, I'm upgrading to the Tacoma brakes (13WL). I went with a 17' wheel--got the gray matt TRDs. I was running larger tires on 15" rims anyway; Michelin Defender LTX, 31x10.5 R15s with no rubbing issues. They were a bear to balance, but that's another story. I am biting my nails wondering if my new tires will rub... Falkin Wildpeak A/T3W - 265/70R17s. Everything else is stock, no lift. Finally replacing the original shocks and upper/lower ball joints just to be safe. Does anyone think I will have issues with rubbing? Thanks!

The 13WL have been great for me on my oversized tires. I loved my wildpeaks when I had them. They were those size exactly. You likely won’t rub too much with that size on stock setup.

Just enjoy her first and get out there. I did a lot with a small 2” lift and 32 tires. That’s more than many casual folks would do and it was great

What did you use to paint those fender trims? and did you sand off the chrome? It's kinda a pain with the rubber right there...

I just ended up painting the whole thing. And yes, i did scuff up the chrome with 80 grit. I just used flat black paint from lowes.

I used to work at a shop in Utah where we built vehicles for anything from camping to MOAB rock crawling. Take it from me DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON BIG TIRES, WHEELS AND ESPECIALLY SPACERS! The COST in wear and tear will eat you a new a**hole. On the 4Runner DON'T GO BIGGER THAN A 275X75X16 OR THE 265X70X17! If you listen to me you will thank me in the end. Instead, spend your hard earned dollars on a QUALITY SUSPENSION (NOT A LIFT KIT), BUMPERS AND SKID PLATES, then LEARN TO DRIVE BETTER. If you don't believe what I'm saying just look at what good drivers do with STOCK Range Rovers.

@@PhoRunner I'm going to be building a 2008 4Runner soon for personal use. It will have an aftermarket front and rear bumper with tire carrier not to mention a heavy duty roof rack (no tent, I don't like them, instead I will pull a small custom 6x10 trailer). By the time I get done I will have several hundred pounds of extra weight on the vehicle. So, where will I spend the money? SUSPENSION! Upper control arms, front and rear springs, good shocks, total adjusted lift (no more than 2 inches). Then, I will fabricate a good set of rock sliders that BOLT to the frame using a FRAME PLATE which will give extra strength to the frame and underneath a good set of heavy duty rock guards. Last, better braking system components. That will be my base.

Lol. I did professionally lift my 2001 4runner 4 inch, replaced the bolt joints, steering rack and pinions, new mud tires even though not 4x4 (just for the look) yes we get the eyes turning everywhere we drive. Parts & labor about 4k. Do u have any hacks for good headlights beside leds retrofit?

Wow! Very informative! Made me feel good and a little sick at the same time. Ha! Man... I did NOT think of ALL of THAT in upgrading to larger tires. I literally purchased tires and wheels 8 hours prior to seeing this. Now, I'm still on a MUCH smaller setup to yours. However, the Tire guy would not recommend what I got without a lift or leveling kit (leveling kit?) I'm still a little new to all of this. He also said needed a positive offset too (min.10). Anyhow, I have 99 T4R SR5. Just putting 265/75/16 with zero offset. I thought the Zero offset would HELP, not hinder??? Hmm. Anyhow, do YOU see any issues for MPG, Power, Rubbing, Stress, Transmission issues, etc with that set up? Your '99 looks Awesome, btw! But you already knew that! Lol. Thanks!

I recently went with 285s on a 17x8.5 -12 offset wheel on my V8 4th Gen, it seems I opened up a can of worms with the rubbing issues...not counting the additional money that will need to be spent on a spare tire carrier. I'm thinking about switching to some zero offset wheels which might fix most of the issues I'm having with the rubbing, thankfully with the V8 I haven't noticed any hit to performance of the vehicle. Although I do like the look and feel of the 285s, I do wonder if maybe I should have got a set of TRD Pro wheels and stuck with 265s to keep it simple.

Snapped rear brake line on my runner wheeling above the rear end would body lift help that in future or suspension lift? Not sure how snapped as not rusted and was easy stretch of trail. Thinking pot hole hit earlier in the day either spare tire or something came down sheared it. Although tire mounted well any thoughts

Yes it can. You won’t be taking the hard lines but I made it up no problem with my 32s. You might scrape if you got the long bed but shouldn’t be bad on the easy lines

Thanks for the informative video. I just bought a 2002 4Runner with 270/70-17 tires. I have a 2” lift on order, but I’m still trying to figure out spare tire storage. I’d like to use the OEM spare location, but the tow hitch has to be removed. Do you know of an aftermarket hitch that would accommodate a larger spare?

These are all great points and points that everyone should know before doing any of this, my only gripe is that this guy is complaining about certain things because of the choices he's made. Running bigger than 33's on stock 4:10 is IMO the worst thing you could possibly do. At the end of the day, do the supporting mods first!!!!!!!

No I have an automatic. Also driving on 32s and 4:88 is not recommended and will be unpleasant. You pretty much need to do it all at once which isn’t feasible for most and if anything, tires before gears would be better than gears before tires.

Manual came with 4:56 stock gears. Mine is an elocker retrofit so 4:30 gears stock

Do you think a 17x8 or 17x9 with a 0 offset would help with clearance? I like your setup with the 34s. There's not a lot of 3rd gens that are running them. I'm planning to run 861s in the rear and 6112s in the frts. You think my COG will be ok? I know you're running LC springs in the rear as well. Also some offroad comparison with a 3rd gen with 33s would be great lol

Don’t quote me but I think 17x8 0 offset would be good for 285 tires. Should clear the factory upper arm even. But I’m not 100% sure. Just some theory I have based on some calculations I did lol

So i bought a 3rd gen with 265/70/17’s and wheels off a trd offroad tacoma. Im going up to 285/70/17’s with beadlocks. The previous owner added a slight lift to it as well. Do you think these would fit fine? I dont mind trimming my fenders and bumper as they’re getting upgraded soon anyway. Im just not sure when to regear and what i should regear to. Also what mpg should I expect?

You might hit the upper control arm with the tacoma wheels. Check how close it is right now and add about 1/2” to it for the wider tires. Probably be ok with no regear if it’s light weight all terrains

Some 16” will fit. I have just the oem rotors so they are same diameter as the 4runner. The caliper is where things may hit the wheels. 231mm will fit some 16” wheels while the 199mm should fit all of them.
