This is old school hot rodding from a time when the first aftermarket performance giants got their start. Get what is available and find a way to make it work. Without this kind of thinking there would be no performance aftermarket. Very glad to see the true spirit of hot rodding living on. Great content and thank you very much for sharing.

Spot on. Excellent job. Thats EXACTLY how its done ✔ These bolt on Barneys don't realize you can make or modify what you need,re- harden if needed and assemble. Thanks for an awesome video 📹

I've done the same head this week not the same process but a good old pressure test and skim and broken bolt on one side fantastic feeling when you drill it so good that the bolt comes out like wire and you don't have to fit a timesert/helicoil just to rub it in at work we use a robin's sg9 valve and guide machine

Goysnays are reasonably cheap but stock mainly imperial inserts with a few metric ones. If you want metric, serdi stock more, but are more expensive. AE and KS also do a range of inserts in various sizes if you can find anyone that stocks them 👍

R5 god they was the nuts in the day thats if you could keep the head from lifting at a bar lol . We use get rid of the head bolts and go stud and nut seemed to work a lot better. The GPA carb was really a waste of time that was just a stock carb with a borded out body. A good head gasket with studs nice alley big intercooler as the stock ones blew the sides off even after strapping it. A hybrid turbo and some fettling you would see 160hp. Change the wires round on the Remix unit and you see 2 more degrees of timing and heat rap the manifold and downpie. Thats if the exhaust studs havent snapped lol .... and make sure the aux fuel pump was working to cool the fuel or put a fuel cooler in there or the thing would never start when hot .... apart from that a fast fragile french rocket !

I had a head gasket fail and later a liner crack in the same place at the edge of cylinder 4. It happened because of a hot spot due to poor water circulation as the flow and return are at cylinder 1. With the removable end plates it is possible to make the water flow across the engine to elimate the hotspot issue with this engine.

Think I had this Renault pushrod IoE engine in my 72 Lotus Europa. The head had 2 valve hemi chambering and a Weber two barrel. Head gaskets fail and the bore liners would move. Otherwise a raunchy little engine that reved to 6500 and pushed the little car to almost 200. My Lotus head gasket failed in a tight morning jam making a big white cloud.

Fitted many valve seats myself but never modified obscure valves to suit the job ,Curious how the collet groove will be machined on , maybe you could alter the position of the groove and achieve a different preload on the spring ?

To be honest with this cyl head, I would forget about valves and do some chamber work around the Inlet valve. It is a typical ' bath tub ' type combustion chamber, which I could spend 15 min / cyl on a simple mod and improve gas flow beyond a valve increase Also, there are critical dimensions one must adhere to as far as mods on intake ports are concerned, in fact the whole mod thing gets rather complex, still if it works for you

Yea these cylinder heads do not need bigger valves, same as R53 Mini. Some good head work without bigger valves can get the same results. Better to have smaller valves and better port flow than bigger valves with less port flow. When these heads are flow tested the exhaust ports are the main restriction not the size of the valve.

Some people are just assholes, plain and simple 🙄🙄🙄🙄! All the theory in the world is great! But sometimes things just don’t work that way! If they ever actually built real competition engines, they would actually know something 🙄🙄🙄🙄! We have a saying over here in the US! (WEW) it stands for, what ever works! We have cut down used coated titanium NASCAR valves, & installed them in tons of little engines! Just because NASCAR guys won’t run them much more than one race, doesn’t mean they won’t live cutdown much smaller with hundreds of pounds less of spring pressure! We also have installed larger overlapping valve seats literally thousands of times, especially on highly boosted or big nitrous small block V8 engines. Because engines running lots of boost & timing ⏱ will completely eat that aluminum between the seats out! So the fix is normally copper beryllium oversized seats & that fixes them permanently! Also those Renault’s were famous for blowing head gaskets, most of the time it was caused by the water pump being up so high above the radiator, if it got just a tiny bit low on water/coolant, it would blow the gaskets right in the center 🙄🙄🙄🙄! Making sure that the deck was correct, because they had wet sleeves if I’m remembering correctly, a nice smooth cylinder head decking & a set of studs we made up did cure the gasket failures! As long as the water was kept full in the overflow tank! People also don’t know that if your blowing head gaskets, there is a reason & something is pissed 😡 off! In general, When you get a race engine head gasket to stay in, you best make sure everything is happy, because if it’s not, you will relieve the pressure one way or another, & that usually means shitting the rods out the bottom 🙄🙄🙄🙄😂😂😂😂! I’m just mentioning this but I’m sure you know, when putting a bigger valves in, you do need to unshroud the valves, around the edge of the combustion chamber, basically right up against the fire-ring in the head gasket, especially if your trying to make power! I remember buying those Renault’s from the dealer for 3 for 100$ back in the late 80s 😜😜😜😜! All they were needing was a head gasket, but for what the dealer charged, people wouldn’t do it & they would purchase a new car 🚗! I know we got at least 12 of them! Just about every new driver in my family had one 🤪🤪🤪🤪! They were awesome 😎 on gas mileage, instead of driving our 10mpg trucks all the time 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻! I put over 150 thousand miles on one & I think my uncle did even more 😂😂😂😂!

It seems logical to me that bigger valves will flow more then smaller ones, I am kind of curious what the logic is when people say this is bad.

@@kevinapps1233 explain in great detail in a really long post just what is this good practice in your opinion when dealing with this engineering dilema,go on give your keyboard a real good workout, set them keys on fire and enlighten us all what this good practice really is, but dont go using terms like custom made unobtanium valves at £500 each as that is too easy and very costly for carlos to cope with,it has to be in the realms of similar cost but how you would do it using good practice and it has to be proven to work just like the above is proven to work
