I know on I77 in Virginia,you'll hit Mt.Rogers elevation about 5,800 feet been through both tunnels many times.

I dont think 3,000 plus rpm's would cause you to loose traction unless your tires are horrible. Sorry never made it to the tunnel could not handle any more back seat driving :X
