This is a video of me releasing a big Wisconsin Wolf from a coyote trap. We haven't had a wolf season in Wisconsin since 2014 but hopefully we can meet again during the upcoming season in the fall of 2021.

Amazing! I am often struck by how, generally speaking from the vids I have seen on wolf trap releases, the wolves are fairly cooperative compared to bobcats which are always completely hostile and pissed off. Of course, thats a lot of weight to wrestle with with the wolves -
@klondike69none852 жыл бұрын
what you just described could also apply to cats and dogs. dogs generally chill, andcats pissed off most of the time. or woman and men. lol

I've often wonder how far away the rest of the pack is when a wolf gets caught in one of these traps. Are they in the forest watching from a distance and don't make themselves known when humans come along because they know the humans will be freeing their pack member rather than going to harm them?
@SA778882 жыл бұрын
I believe pack animals are less courageous and less aggressive in general, (when alone) than solitary animals like almost all cats.....I think the solitary lifestyle forces them to be more game than pack animals are, who CAN afford to fall short on occasion.

Wolves - and canids generally - are distinctively social animals. Being able to cause each other grievous harm, they grow up learning about modes of dominance and submission in a way that generally avoids the risk of injury. I've seen a few examples of these leghold trap situations where they will not settle down until very firmly restrained, and even then will dash off as soon as they are free. But more often they submit quite readily - particularly once their heads are held down - and seem to be in no hurry to leave once released. This poor wolf was limping when it left, so it would be in pain and perhaps shock as well: not functioning at full ability, and therefore not a good example of normal behavior. Still, it showed no panic and no aggression at all, once released. Even in pain, it could see that the situation didn't call for extreme action. I wouldn't expect that sort of restrained self control from a wolverine in the same situation.

For anyone who is curious about the effects of leghold traps, I will paste information from “Literature Review on the Welfare Implications of Leghold Trap Use in Conservation and Research”. This paper is based on research by the American Veterinary Medical Association. ----------------------------------------------------------- Immediate injury - Publications describing trap refinement tend to equate animal welfare with injury alone, so data relating to other considerations is limited. With the use of modern trap designs and improved procedures for setting traps, amputations and bone fractures are becoming more rare; swelling, hemorrhage, and lacerations still occur and post-release survival may be impaired even by relatively minor injuries. Restraint - Being held and restrained is presumed to be distressing to many wild species, and limb restraint has been shown to cause more stress than cage enclosure for foxes and ferrets. Raccoons seem to have particularly adverse reactions, spending extended periods attempting to escape and having a high incidence of self-mutilation. During restraint animals may die from exertion, predation or adverse climate. Non-target animals - Traps may capture under-sized animals or unintended species. Reported captures of non-target animals range from 0 to 67% of total catch, but many studies do not fully report non-target catches and outcomes. Capture of some non-target animals can be reduced by selective trap placement or modifying the force necessary to activate the trap or sufficient to break free of the trap. Traps may have a more severe impact on non-target animals; for example, leg hold traps set for coyotes may be more damaging to small birds and animals and raccoons. Surveys of endangered animals such as flightless birds sometimes record high levels of trap injury. Non-target animals can be released from leg hold traps, but their survival may be impaired. More severe injuries may also result with multiple captures of the same animal in catch-and-release situations.

Perhaps a piece of plywood with either handles or a shield type forearm holder with a hole in the bottom where the trapped paw sticks through but you are protected would work better. The wolf seems to be a lot like the human, family oriented, work together, have to hunt for their food, intelligent. I noticed that he seemed to realize at the end you were trying to help him. I'm glad we aren't massively killing them, they seem to fear humans for the most part, you don't hear about the attacks like with the mountain lions and bears.
