Mini Quest: Create a Zen or free form Doodle using Rule of thirds or the Golden Spiral. on the back write what your honest gut opinion is on this design tool.
The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide line and their intersection point, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section. When used in painting you can create a fun force with in your art
Quest #rule of thirds and other designs skills are the calculus of art
The rule of thirds should be one of many many composition tools. It is often taught as an absolute but in fact is no more or less than a simple skill on a toolbox of skills.
Golden rectangle any rectangle proportioned 2×3. Same as your camera Western art was built on this “golden rectangle.” Or at least the idea if it. . Like the way the wagon wheels of a chariot determined the space shuttle wheels
If you divide a golden rectangle into thirds you get baby golden rectangles .
By the way, most cameras’ autofocus sensors are placed at intervals that correspond to the rule of thirds.
The spiral convention is actually a continuation of the Rule of Thirds . Also known as the golden spiral . You can see this in nature in plants seeds and shells. In this particular spiral, the same mathematical formula is applied as if you were continuing the progression of dissecting the golden rectangle into ever-smaller rectangles.
You will hear about the Fibonacci spiral because it is based on the Fibonacci sequence of numbers. The number sequence begins 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34 and continues infinatly. In the sequence, any two numbers (in order) add up to the next number in the sequence 2+3=5, 5+8=13 and so on. Nature has many examples of this.
Alot of people live and draw by these principles but many many academics and working artists consider this to be the Grassy knoll of the art world…. a total myth. As a new artist you need to know these terms as a way to armor yourself and your art. Use them if they work and walk from them when they do not. Art is always about learning the rules and then breaking them.
Adolf Zeising argued that the golden ratio was a universal law that described "beauty and completeness in the realms of both nature and art... which permeates, as a paramount spiritual ideal, all structures, forms and proportions, whether cosmic or individual, organic or inorganic, acoustic or optical
Whether that wa factual or not it caught on and after architects and even Dali used these principles. Be clear that Da Vinci did not. He was just smarter then all of them.

I really enjoyed this episode. I like your message. It's OK to diverge from what everyone else does. That's how I go about my woodworking too. When it comes to creativity, the "rules" beg to be broken.

In my photography I use the rule of thirds often. Even watching movies, I notice they use the off centered rule of thirds frequently. Fun to look for it in everyday advertisiing, tv shows, etc. Thank you John and your lovely wife Cinnamon. Another great quest.

My first thought (besides laughing, because the rule of thirds was the first thing my photography class taught me) was that I think the "rule" came about because all these famous artistic pieces seemed to follow the same sort of formula...as though this rule is just encoded into the universe and artists are magically able to draw it out. Then you mentioned our affinity for finding patterns in literally anything, and I conceded to you. lol I missed out on this today! But I'm also newly subscribed to your channel, so it turns out I had to hit the little bell icon. Never again shall I miss out! Thank you for all these videos. Even if I don't have the opportunity to paint along right now, it's your energy and watching it all come together that I just love. You (and your husband!) are fabulous!

I watched your quest on fear and blockage and I was blown away. I actually was enlightened and had an epiphany which hasn't happened for awhile. When you said that we were born with everything we needed to be who we are meant to be and that we were lacking in nothing it just rocked my world. Thank you so much Cinnamon for your wisdom and insight. I too have a Higher Power and when you shared that you gave everything you just don't get over to him you were just talking to me it seemed. I can't tell you how grateful I am for your candidness and transparency, and your true desire to teach and help other artists. I will accomplish much and reach my dreams because of what happened tonight listening to you-and John as well. I loved what he said about bravery and fear. Hi Cinn! Just watched this on the replay. Was so tired after my first week at art school I just SLEPT. STill tired...lol Thank you so much for this. I think we'll be covering it fairly soon. We did colour theory this week and painted a HUGE colour wheel, and we need to do another one at home for our art diaries. It was awesome as I felt really at ease, having done our mixing charts with the Quests, and I cooked through...lol

Just finished watching this, sorry I missed it live. Was gone all day doing a focus group thing. Glad to hear you speaking in a reasonable manner regarding the "golden rectangle, the golden ratio, the Fibonacci sequence, rule of thirds" and such. These are all fun to explore and are romantic in nature (Sacred Geometry), but are not absolutes. I don't think there are any absolutes in art. Thank you, Cinnamon, thank you, John. You guys are great!

Wow there's a lot of comments. Thanks Cinnamon & John. I just love watching you. Thanks for the encouragement about there is no being behind on the quest, it's at the universe's pace. I SHOULD know that but...apparently I didn't and needed to hear it. I just received my 1st part of my order of paint. (I'm housebound with illness so have to buy online.) The brushes, that aren't backordered, will be here next week along with the paper so I can actually start. I think I saw that you added or changed the color palette for summer. That freaked me out a little, ittle bit then I calmed down. I'll work on the painting I can and add whatever colors I need when I can. You just make me happy and the idea of making art makes me happy. Thank you for being you!

I came back to watch this again; because my son and I were talking about the fibonacci sequence and I found the spiral image that defines that sequence and it made me remember the spiral you used on Mona Lisa :) As a scientist, I am particularly fascinated by the concept and need to push it away so that my art work doesn't require regimentation :D Oh my goodness, I spewed my coffee when you said some were wound so tight they make diamonds! Lol, I am not that wound :p

I know the feeling Marty! I was here in time, rushed everything to get here and half way through my cousin popped in to check up on me after my double somersault off bed and crash landing! always got my support, am learning so much, thank you, did find this one a bit difficult though and would love it if you could go over glazing technique again, quite a few of us mucked it up, we found the liquitex glazing medium dried so fast. HELP :) xxx

colour charts are a great from each brand helps with all the pigment infomation ,staining ,opaque, transparent,granulating.

The Golden ratio was first created in Ancient Greece. Phidias (500 BC - 432 BC), a Greek sculptor and mathematician, studied phi and applied it to the design of sculptures for the Parthenon. Euclid proved that the diagonals of the regular pentagon cut each other in "extreme and mean ratio", now more commonly known as the golden ratio.

dang I missed the live stream AGAIN!! so here I am again with the replay I have heard of The 3rds and the rectangle but see as more of a suggested idea to just to keep things balanced but not as absolute rule so hey I don't follow it as a rule ffft cause that could be limiting

Fun fact: any series of numbers will approach the Golden Spiral when added in the same manner as the traditional Fibonacci sequence.

I love this video. Thank you for explaining so much about fibonacci and rule of 3rds. I've used rule of thirds, being pretty much a beginner, and not knowing the "TWUE" rules of composition. Now I can relax, a bit anyway. I could relax better though, if I could find a simple explanation (blushing and feeling kind of silly) of the arabesque you mentioned. When I search, I just get a bunch of very complicated patterns, and can't figure out the commonality between them. Thanks bunches, Cinnamon and John, for all the help you've given me! I love that you are going to use ASL with you videos. Im hard of hearing. captions on everything but I would love to see your classes in sign. When do you do life shows? Do you still do live shows? I've just just subscribed so I'm working through your videos.

Thank you for a great explanation. So when you said you would cover Arabesque design principle later, you meant later in the quest, not this broadcast, right? BTW, I've actually made a crocheted afghan once that I had rows in the Fibinacci numbers. LOL

Hi art Sherpa, ! I'm new at all this, you e seen some of my comments, so I get a lot of the replays. How do I divide the rule of thirds on say a canvas size 12 by 16. Thank you! And love all your videos

ohhh man maths. 5.3 inches for the 16 and 4" for the 12. Measure and mark off and use a t square for the lined. Where they bisect those are your focal points
