When I did my first airport security training, the chap who did the course carried with him as his "tools of the trade" a real but deactivated gun and several fake but viable bombs, with plasticene substituted for the plastic explosive. While passing through airports, where he had to identify himself and notify them of the contents of his luggage, on several occasions he had to stand by the side of the X-ray machine operator and point out "That's a gun. That's a bomb" etc, which demonstrates that these people had no idea what they were looking for or at.

My father traveled across several countries and airports back in the 90's. On the way back he just out of curiosity asked to look at the monitor when his things were going through and was shocked to see a handful of 9mm cartridges forgotten there at the shooting range in the pocket of his overcoat. At least 5 security inspectors had seen those and none of them had said anything. I on the other hand had to have my old mechanical film cameras separately X-rayed a couple of years ago at Helsinki airport because the security personnel probably had never seen such things before and got all suspicious when they saw cameras that were full of gears and springs instead of circuit boards. I guess they thought they were time bombs but nowadays a time bomb probably would not be mechanical. They also said to me I should have put the cameras in a separate tray with my phone and my digital cameras while the instructions clearly said the separate tray thing only concerned devices containing batteries which the film cameras don't have. But from what I've heard and read many (not all of course) of the people working at airport security probably are some very special kind of idiots who try to conceal their gross incompetence and ignorance with arrogance and aggressiveness. Goes for many police officers and other public authorities too. I really hope airline pilots are smarter, a person who mistakes a glue gun for a firearm and gets hijacked with one should have no business with airplanes.

@@Murgoh You'd be amazed how simple it can be to make a time bomb. The airport security training I mentioned showed that a timer can be made with a clothes peg and a short length of fuse wire. It's not precise, of course, but close enough to be effective.

I've had similar problems with UK airport "security" in my case it was pen/carbide scribe, and a block of self hardening modelling clay, The some how thought that the pen/carbide scribe was a weapon (in their words a "Tactical Pen") and they thought the modelling clay was a "Plastic Explosive", I demonstrated that the pen/carbide scribe functioned as a pen and then scribed a couple of straight lines with the tungsten scribe tip, as for the “Plastic Explosive” I demanded that they checked it with the Ionscan 600 that was sitting on their desk that was 20 foot away, they were very put out when the Ionscan gave a negative reading. I'm always willing to educate government employees on things they should have been taught day one of their training.

@@BaconMinion I found the "Security" peoples antics quite amusing, If I'd wanted to get a weapon/IED onto the plane I'd have easily been able to do it with the engineering skill I have, watching them fuss over the Pen/Scribe had my friends chuckling as they totally missed the 3 foot of Para-cord and a 10oz spherical fishing weight that was in my pocket clutter ans my friends had the same length of Para-cord along with a brass 1 1/2" Whitworth nut a piece which could easily have been used as impact weapons like a Monkey's Fist. And it was not like we tried to hide them they were in our hand luggage .

In all fairness, airport security's job is to take no risks. If a layperson could reasonably believe it's a weapon (and thus be threatened by its brandishing) then I don't blame them for leaning on the side of caution by not letting him carry it on the plane. One of the last things you want while 30,000+ feet in the air is mass panic due to the appearance of a threat, even if that threat isn't genuine.

TSA saw my small set of drivers (collection of about 30 bits and a driver handle) and told me "drill bits aren't allowed!" in a snippy tone. When I politely informed them they were small screw driver bits and not drill bits they supervisor let it through although gave me some "well ya know...". Now the case has "SCREW DRIVER SET" in bold sharpie on the front of it and been through multiple TSA checkpoints. I seem to always get the trainee (but maybe all they have is supervisors and trainees).

About 20 years ago I received a fireside companion set (poker, shovel, tongs etc) as a Christmas gift and packed it in my hold luggage when returning home to Ireland. My wife and I were paged in the lounge of Leeds bradford Airport and escorted to a little room by armed coppers and made to unpack our case. Afterwards a grinning copper showed us the x ray and the unassembled utensils looked a lot like an automatic gun, down to the pointy brass ferrules in a line like bullets in a magazine, the shovel looked like the handle, the bundled shafts like the barrel and the poker end like a trigger.

Next time put it in the hold luggage. If the plane catches fire mention to the cabin crew that it was probably your hot glue gun, but you couldn't take it through into hand luggage because of the crayon eaters doing their little bit of drama. Have known many people who brought things you shouldn't onto planes. Security never noticed or cared, more concerned with cans of deodorant and bottles of water than strips of pills, fake vape liquid with other stuff dissolved and people with stuff in their prison pocket carry on.

Your situation here reminded me of what happened at Dublin on my way to Isle of Man....my hand baggage was the same one I used when hunting here at home. The side pocket was full of coins that I did not bother to empty out. My bag passed security in Los Angeles without incident. When departing Dublin to go to IoM, that bag was diverted at the security checkpoint. An officer went through the side pocket and pulled something out and placed it in a plastic bag. He asked whose bag it was. I told him it was mine. He showed me what they had found. It was a live .22cal round! I was horrified, and explained that the bag was the same one I used on hunting trips, and the round must have been left in from my last hunt. After some questions from him, he said that the Ireland Police would question me, and if I had no record I would be let go. As Clive knows, I obviously was and made it to IoM on time. I must say that all of the officials were very kind, non confrontational, and very understanding. (I hate to think of what would have happened with TSA here, they aren't so understanding.) The mystery to me was, how did that same bag get through TSA in Los Angeles? I did ask the officer whilst waiting for the police, and his guess was that the coins shielded the round when x-ray'd in LA. Lesson learned: Completely empty out ALL pockets and compartments before packing for a trip!

Back in the 90:s my father had a handful of 9mm rounds in his overcoat pocket, they had been left there at the shooting range. went through at least 5 airports and nobody noticed, on the last airport he out of curiosity asked to see the screen and was horrified to see the cartridges in clear sight but the security personnel didn't notice anything. I use the same large British army duffel bag I use for my shooting equipment as luggage on holiday trips as I usually go on sailing vacations and hard luggage is impractical in a cramped boat. Before a trip I make sure to empty every compartment so there's nothing like cartridges, magazines etc. in them, I also put the bag in the washing machine to wash off any powder residue that could trigger explosive detectors.

About equipment turning on unintentionally: I happen to have a small gas torch which I sometimes use at work. One day I stuffed it into my backpack a little too carelessly and when I came home and set it down on the floor I noticed a faint hissing sound and had no idea where it came from. That question was answered quite quickly by a jet of smoke making its way through the hole the torch had melted through the bottom of the backpack, followed by a nice blue flame. Following that incident I tend to be more careful.

Give them your sob story, and ask if you can "lose" dad's knife for the length of time until you're coming back through. Couple people reported success!

I got the multitool and a wireless soldering tool recently in Aldi. So far they've been pretty useful. Also I might mention that the tools are made by Positec, the same company that makes Worx tools. As is often the case with Aldi / LIDL if you look at the warranty of the tool it'll normally say who made the thing in the first place and often it is major manufacturer, often from Germany. They might even make the same tool under different names but similar spec.

Just returned from Portugal, a quick repair job on a car and a bit of golf, security at Edinburgh Airport decided that the short reach 14mm combination spanner was a major security risk and nicked it. They did miss the 12v test lamp with a 4 inch metal spike.

I've got one of these Ferrex glue guns and it is really good. A handy thing to have. It does have an auto power off feature so maybe that switch in the trigger, if it sees no input from that over a preset period of time then it will turn off.

When I flew to London for FFXIV fan fest last year with British Airways, they stressed like 20 times in their luggage guidelines that all devices with internal batteries HAVE to go into your cabin luggage. With such rules in place, I really wonder what you're supposed to do if you need powered tools (like those 2 you had) for your job and take them on a flight. Confiscating them for dubious reasons and then collecting a fee so you can get them back is IMHO total BS and if that happened to me I wouldn't stop complaining until they drop the BS and let me keep the tools where they force me to keep them... Anyway, interesting device, and that tiny heater disk kind of reminds me of the modern round heating blocks used on some 3D printers.

They say that, and then because everyone has roller carry on bags now because they charge to check luggage, and the bins are too small, they make you check it all at the gate anyway - batteries or not, they don't care. When you tell them "it's chock full of lithium batteries", they just say "that's fine"

In the times that fluids were allowed in bigger quantities in an on-board luggage (around 18 years ago), I transported the 24 pack of mini coca-cola cans as a novelty. In the bag (on top of the cans), there were also: a motherboard for repair and some ignition cables for a rare car, some clothes and shoes. The X-ray must have looked pretty interesting, so did the reaction of the X-ray operators and security... a lot of security... but - after all the emotions went down, they let me through. Times have clearly changed.

@@holysirsalad Yeah that's one of the examples I was thinking about. The ones on drive shaftes that will almost certainly be rounded out by those not in the know using a torx bit. (May also ruin the bit).

Torx is a fantastic bit / screw shape. very hard to slip, excellent power transfer and good quality bits hold for a very long time. We almost exclusively use them in woodworking, T20 is the most common size.

@@DrakkarCalethiel Yes torx is one of the better ones used in europe. 3 and 4 square are also good but can be confusing to the less technical. Robertson is also good. Chross heads and slot heads should be discontinued unless in building preservation. In mechanics there is really no good reason for using an inferior screw head for reasons of preservation assuming the unit is in active use.

Some guys at my last job did the exact same thing, went across country to install fast access inventory shelves for specific workshops and usually they drive and they need to bring a glue gun for part of the process. One of the workshops was in Edinburgh and we're located near London so they took a plane with most of the parts already sent by pallet but they had the glue guns with them and they got taken at security on the plane

One time, I was flying in the US, and I had a pneumatic impact wrench in my carry on luggage. The safety officer told me I couldn’t carry it on because power tools are not allowed on planes. Not sure what I could have done without an air compressor, but regs are regs. I checked my bag and it was fine.

Security are wonderful people. I was once refused entry to the Empire State Building in New York because they scanned my camera bag and said I had a concealed knife. I said that I didn't and gingerly opened the bag hoping not to be shot and removed my 'small camera tripod'. Once they were happy it was not a weapon I was allowed through.

I had some hold luggage destructively examined by airport security when flying to see friends in Japan a couple of decades ago. It came off the carousel at Narita with half its contents hanging out. Annoyed at having been "randomly" selected for suitcase destruction, I only remembered on getting to my friends' house that I'd bought them a gift when in Ireland a few weeks prior: a clock built into a piece of ancient Irish bogwood. So what I'd put in the hold of an aircraft was basically a large misshapen lump of organic material with a ticking mechanism in the middle of it. Just to add to the paranoia, this was September 11th 2002. In hindsight it's a wonder they let me on the plane at all.

In the late 70's my parents bought me an automotive timing light.. They took me to the airport to fly from Syracuse, NY to Tampa, Florida. The timing light was in a box with a full color label, that read, "Sears Timing Light". The "gun" showed up on xray, and alarms went off. A female law enforcement officer approached me with her hand on her firearm and asked me to very slowly pull the device from the box. I did so and said, "It's a timing light." She told me it could be a gun disguised as a timing light. She confiscated the light and escorted me to the plane always with one hand on her gun. The light was given to the pilot and I boarded the plane. At my destination, the pilot gave me the light back.

Reminds me of the time I went through customs with some "Bum Butter" in my had luggage. For the uninitiated, this was chamois cream for cycling. Try as I might, I couldn't persuade them that it wasn't, in fact, a consumable item such as you would spread on toast. Perhaps I should have asked them to eat some to make that clear. Anyway, it ended up being disposed in their great big bin of future customs officer Christmas presents.

that heats up quick! i have one that uses 4 AA cells, plus 2 gas ones and they seem to take ages to warm up enough, especially one of the gas ones! the battery one is weirdly branded 'coldheat' same company as made that instant/'cold' soldering iron thingy with a split carbon tip, which is pretty much useless !

The security theater actors sized you up as a peaceful teddy bear quite unlikely to throw a loud fit, so they determined they could perform their theatrics safely on you and feel better about their otherwise useless career choices. There's two things I'd want different about this before I switch from a dirt-cheap AC mains glue gun. First, replace the spotwelded battery with a battery door and spring terminals so it is trivially easy for a user to replace the battery. Second, a big chonky disconnect switch on that battery. Without it, I'd feel just a tad uncomfortable about throwing this in a toolbox or bag. Too much chance of accidentally turning it on and starting a fire... I suppose both of these are hacks I could do myself...

Keep in mind that the unit can theoretically pull 10A from the cell for short bursts, so a friction contact might not be a good idea.

True. But I suspect it's solvable without every user needing a spotwelder. Maybe we're ready for an improved standard contact system that's still user-servicable. I mean, tool battery packs can put out more than 10A continuous, and those contacts are just copper-coated springs and blades...

​@@oasntet Yup, it's all about the contact area, that's why the blades are as wide as they are, the springs are divided (so irregularities don't lift the whole spring) and there are there are often multiple springs, to boot. In fact, the home battery tool lines all have hot melt glue dispensers, just not as nice and compact as this one.

@@bigclivedotcom When I made my trip from Paris to Marseille in France about 3 years ago I had to choose between the train and the plane. Plane tickets were a bit cheaper but I knew I would have had to deal with airport security and didn't want to have to show my toys to everyone in the line. Also putting them in the checked bag wasn't really an option as those also get security screened and I had read about some passengers who had found their toys on the outside of the bags on the conveyor belt at the destination airport. So I chose the train and sure enough, no one looked at my bags. But that could have happened thank's to the current security measures against terre-or attacks and in that case it would have been as embarrassing as if I had chosen the plane.

The white stuff is probably a silica compound not too disimilar to the heat shields on storage heaters on the exposed panels (normally just the front panel) to stop burns... Ish.

I have the Lidl version, it's great! The narrow sticks are a pro not a con, easier to get precisely how much you need, if you need more you just squeeze again. Heats up fast, and can be used while charging. My only complaint is they won't charge on a proper USB-C PD charger, they cheaped out on the charging circuit, so it's USB A to C only.

The 0.4Ohm resistor is a fusing resistor. It basically acts as a fuse in the instance of a short. It also slightly reduces inrush current due to Lithium Ion batteries having naturally high capacitance. The bypass resistor is a trickle charge. Honestly I would have gone with a higher value myself. The mosfet PWM cycles it between trickle charge rate and standard charge rate.

That small heating element could be useful to make some very compact 3D printer hotend assemblies. On the matter of the battery capacity, is it possible that the battery was chosen to manage a high discharge current and this would mean having to live with thicker foils and lower capacity?
