Good on Nokero for designing/building their own product. Way too many "startups" take a Chinese product, slap their brand on it and call it as new innovative product. Chinese copying these guys instead is indication how good Nokero is/was.

@@joecool4656 That's pretty cool. I found some rechargeable lights with an external solar panel. The panel connects via USB micro. Sadly the battery inside isn't that great. I'll probably do surgery to increase the battery size on those. I've also been testing some USB bulbs that plug into a USB battery bank. Then I recharge the battery bank with a solar panel. It's a decent solution.

@@jmr Yeah that's a good start. An important thing to note is that the voltage from the solar panel must be higher than the voltage of the battery for it to charge. I did not know this and kept making early versions of lights that eventually would need to be recharged

6:38 What really happens with a boost converter is that when the IC's driver is grounded, it is inductor CURRENT that linearly ramps up with a slope of Vdd/L (amps per second). The longer the on time (Ton), the higher the peak of the ramp current. When the switch is turned off (Toff), the output pin voltage flies up (hence "flyback") but the current cannot instantaneously change while the voltage can, and does. The output voltage rises until it is clamped by the LEDs (about 3.0V) and the current begins to ramp down as the voltage reverses, with a ramp rate of (Vled-Vin)/L (amps per second). Thus the inductor has a triangular current waveform and the LED sinks the second half of the inductor's triangular waveform. The averages of these triangular waveforms are what you read as the DC currents on a multimeter. The details of operation are too nuanced to describe in detail here (continuous vs. discontinuous) but the math is simple algebra once you can wave your hands to describe the inductor waveforms. Just know that the basic assumption about a boost is that Vout > Vin whereas for a buck it is reversed.

We had a couple of the knock off ones, Left them outside and they lasted for several years exposed to the elements and daily cycles. If I replaced the battery cell they would probably still work fine. Sadly the cheapies from China are really the only ones that po' folk in the developing world can afford, and AFAIK there are a lot more common where they were intended to be. Nokero's business model is/was the typical condescending Western "handout welfare". The actual Nokeros are mostly owned by suburban eco hipsters. reminds me of the ''waka waka'' solar light/powerbank i have. basically the same idea as the Nokero but a different design. Has 2 cob LED's in it with 4 brightness settings, USB type A out and a mini USB connector where it can be charged from a generic USB charger or anything else with USB that provides power. They arent cheap but if you buy one they will send one to a charity in a country selected by you (from a list ofcourse). unfortunately they only ship to buyers from Belgium, France Germany or the Netherlands, limiting the amount of customers they can reach

Big Clive, awesome video as always. I was wondering if they make a product you could connect a fully charged battery and it would drain it giving you the capacity, or a little DIY piece of kit would be even better. You may even already have a video on such a thing, I'm always curious about the actual capacity of all these different batteries VS how they're labeled.

I don't know that he has a dedicated battery capacity tester, but he does often test dubious batteries by draining them and then manually charging them via a bench supply or the like. When he does, he usually leaves the true capacity in the video description (and usually reminds us somewhere in the video, which he seems to have forgotten this time.) Anyways, checking the description, it looks like this 1000 mAh battery was actually 1000 mAh.

If they use the same inductor on both sides, couldn't they just eliminate one of the chips and inductors and have the switch toggle between the led choices? For that matter if the LEDs are all the same, make it 5 LEDs on the outside and have the high setting just add them in parallel to the center one. Not great but it is already not great, they could cut a lot of costs here and not be any crappier than it already is.

Or the company gets bought out and the new companies makes it worse etc.

I made a more reliable light by doing it myself. One 6V (max) 20mA solar panel, one leftover mobile phone Li-Ion battery and a circuit from a design I found online using two NPN transistors, four resistors and a diode. It drives 10 white LED lights when it gets dark and turns the LEDs off and charges the battery when it gets light enough. The load of the battery and the internal protection circuit combine to ensure it will never over-charge, and the 10 LEDs draw enough current to pull down the voltage when the battery is fully charged so that it doesn't blow out the LEDs. It's been running like that for years, now.

It's great to see a video highlighting the differences between the original Nokero light and its clone. The Nokero light is such a meaningful innovation, designed to improve the lives of people in developing countries by providing a safer alternative to kerosene lamps. It's unfortunate that some companies choose to take advantage of this idea for their own profit without considering the ethical implications. Your in-depth analysis of the technical aspects of both lights is very informative and offers valuable insights to the viewers. It's also responsible of you to have waited before making this video to avoid any negative impact on Nokero's business. Your commitment to sharing knowledge while being considerate of the potential consequences is truly commendable. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see more informative and insightful videos like this in the future!

@@Alacritous Thank you for sharing your perspective. While it's true that the Nokero light is, at its core, an LED light with a solar charger, its innovative aspect lies in the context and the impact it has on the lives of people in developing countries. By providing a safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly alternative to kerosene lamps, Nokero has made a significant difference in many communities. The simplicity of the design is precisely what makes it so accessible and effective in these regions. Moreover, the marketing around the Nokero light is not solely about selling a product; it's about raising awareness of the challenges faced by people in energy-poor areas and offering a sustainable solution to address those needs. Innovation isn't always about creating the most technologically advanced product.

When I checked after they finished charging, their capacities showing were 1493 and 1511 mAh. I think it's like a garden light you leave it ON then the controller charges the battery turning the light on when the sun goes down. The logic that the battery should be charged when the switch is off has been lost on the designers! Some garden lights suffer from this problem, they only charge if left on - the switch they provide is pointless in many cases and as that is often the first failure point, due to corrosion, can be bridged out.

as far as crap knockoffs go that's not too half bad. at least they used a NIMH cell instead of a damned LION. the nimh cell is easily replaced and should last 10 plus years like the LIFEPO4 cell would As for the real one the big deal to me is that it uses a lifepo4. meaning it should last 10 years and could last double that and still have usable capacity. now I really want one.

You'd think the simplest (aka cheapest) circuit would be to just switch between two different value inductors, so drive the same number of LEDs but with different current. You'd need a 3-way switch though (low / off / high) rather that the usual crappy 2-way they use.

I mistakenly bought a Tacky Nokero clone from Amazon for $42. They have gotten worse than the one reviewed above. The latest version only has 4 LEDs. All LEDs illuminate in the high and low setting, This is nothing but a slightly modified garden light. I spent $42 for something worth $2

Real one also likely to be designed and made in China, contracted to do so by a company who just decided to virtue-signal more and sell them at a bigger markup with more marketing wank. Do they really think a solar-rechargeable light is such an amazing invention? 🙄

At least it doesn't have the annoying strobe/sos function. I would love a torch without the strobe function, just low medium, and high would be fine. Every time I switch my torch on and it starts to flash I have the compulsion to throw it against the wall. I'm in my garage not up the Himalayas, ARRRGGGHHHGHGHGHHHHhhh.........

Not gonna lie, nokero should of went with a QX5252F design. Its MUCH simpler, and NI-CD/NI-MH are way more forgiving then lithium batteries.

You could eliminate the second ic and second inductor altogether if you did the switching between led strands after the first inductor lol! I don't get it. And 3 pcb's and a bunch of wires? Hell nah just make it all on 1 pcb and use soldered metal tabs to hold the cell in place. Boom no wires, single pcb, and half the parts lol!

They both look like cheap junk with no good practical use. Even though Nokero's solar panel is more efficient - it also has transparent plastic layer coating which will permanently discolor after some time (much, much sooner than something like tempered glass that is used in solar panels where long lifespan matters), and the battery in Nokero was not AA-sized. In that no-name Chinese clone you can at least replace the AA-sized NiMh battery with any other kind of fully charged AA-sized battery (something that is easy to find in most countries around the world) and have a usable light even after solar panel will go permanently dead or in places with long periods of very low lighting (where any kind of solar panel would be useless).
