We know as Jesus was said to have been born during the winter during the time of the winter solstice which takes place at the end of the year specifically on December 21st or 22nd. the first time it was celebrated was in 336ad and was celebrated in the 25th as it was around the time of Jesus birthday. Since they did not know the exact date Saint Nicolas just gave present and toys to children in his town on the 24th and the children discovered them on the 25th.
