Great video, concise. Very easy job. I agree with doing this every 30,000 miles. My mom gave me her 2008 Honda Civic with 78,000 miles, which is low mileage for a car that age. I just changed the transmission fluid today (it had never been changed before), and fluid was a grayish brown, instead of red. Was a fair amount of metal sludge on the drain plug magnet as well. I'm going to do one or two more drain and fills in the next few weeks to 'catch it up' and have nice, red transmission fluid.
@tigergreg8 Жыл бұрын
Wow. A Civic with only 78,000 miles. Geesh, that's no mileage for a Honda. I'm getting a friend of mines Civic in about an month with 163,000 miles. Drives really nice and sounds great. Did you notice a difference with all the changes?

Most excellent! Some points you might try. Keep and mark ounce levels on some old plastic juice jugs for using. Drain out into one. Put a mark on jug. I use a piece of painters tape. Drain that into another jug and refill with new ATF right to the mark. That way you’re assured of putting in exactly what came out without measuring anything. This approach works great for other car fluids too. These jugs drain overnight almost completely then just a little gasoline in them to clean them up for next time. Mine took 85 ounces or 2.65 quarts. Great video

Thank you very much. So thorough and easy to follow. Just today I noticed my car was no switching gears properly. So I checked the moto and transmission and turns out I was empty on the transmission fluid. Here I’m hoping the motor has not been damaged.

@BigDog500015 жыл бұрын
Honda makes models with different transmissions, some have a conventional automatic transmission (like in this video) and some have Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs). Most newer Honda now have CVTs. That being said, I am not aware of any 2010 Civics (in the US) that have CVT transmissions. Don't take my word for it, go to a Honda dealer parts department with the VIN and they can tell you what it needs.

Which may I add is a horrible pain the the a$$ to take off re-install. I called Honda and asked to speak to one of their techs. I asked the guy about the filter he said, “those don’t have filters”. Not true. It’s up and behind the air filter box to the left of the brake fluid reservoir. And that also isn’t east to get those hoses off with the flared ends on the filter itself. Once you get the hoses back on each end, then you have to re-position the air box and secure it, which is the most tedious part of the job.

After that he lifted the car up and drained the oil, is the similar aspect of you running the car for 60 seconds before seeing if the fill line is correct? I didn't see much difference in what you both did, seems straightforward. We all appreciate your help, you know how it is as you're saving us $150 per comment on this post.. My car is sitting at approximately 120k miles. As far as I know the transmission fluid hasn't been changed once (but it's possible). At any rate, during the inspection the dealer wants to charge $190 for the transmission fluid exchange service so I opted for the DIY. This video looks REALLY helpful and I'd like to go ahead and do this, but first I have one question: with as many miles as my car has and with the fluid service history unknown, do you think the fluid needs to be FLUSHED or can I still just replace it as shown in this video?
@BigDog500017 жыл бұрын
Just FYI, Honda does not recommend a using a machine to "flush" the transmission fluid, which might be what that dealer wants to do. If I owned that vehicle, I would do a drain and fill like I showed in the vehicle and check the condition of the fluid during the service. If it was really bad, I would probably do a second drain and fill (after a short drive) and reassess the condition of the fluid after (and then possibly do a third). If it looks decent (like there is still a hint of pink), I would probably opt to wait and do the next transmission service (drain and fill) when I do my next oil change.
@techtressow7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I went ahead and changed it myself (and wow it was super easy). I haven't test-driven it yet so the color's nice and pink right now so I'll update later. I'd like to not have to refill several times since the stuff is expensive. Come to think of it, this is not the 1st inspection I've had and this is the first time transmission fluid failed, so at 120k miles it's got to have been changed before. I do it right at the honda dealership btw so they should change the fluid the honda way, right...? I'll do what has to be done though and do multiple fills after some test drives if it looks bad. The old oil did look pretty bad as it was a dark brown. Thanks again dude
@techtressow7 жыл бұрын
Update: I took it for a test drive and it was noticably more responsive. Definitely smoother in gear shifting. However, after I got back, after waiting about 10 minutes, I checked the fluid and it was brown. Not nearly as dark as it was before I changed it but still brown. Will probably go for a second fill. Edit: I actually read the full description of my inspection report. It says the technician will use a cleaner and flush the transmission to ensure all old fluid and particles are emptied. C'mon honda people, step it up! Do you not know this isn't recommended?

Nice job getting it done! One drain and fill only gets out about 36% or so of the fluid on most Hondas, which is why it is very important to do it at regular intervals.

Tatsuya u have to do 3 refills to get it completely out or just change it with oil changes until clear

Wow. So easy. What the heck I get charge 125.00 at a shop about at 60000 miles. Just did this myself at 116000 miles. 2.5 quarts drain out like you said. Some people say 3 quarts. I will do this every 30000 miles now. Just wonder what brand the shop use?

If it is a reputable shop, they should be using Honda ATF.

Would it be worth measuring what drained? Then matching that exactly to put back in?

Should I start this process 1st thing in the morning or can I go grab stuff to get it to operating temperature then change?
