I found out by mistake that if you do the 2nd Variation with your Middle Finger instead of your pinky, it leaves you in the perfect position to transition to a Y2K.

I think you were holding it the wrong way. The Y2K starts with the bite handle facing you, but this trick end with the safe handle.

You could honestly just do the second half (from rightside up to upside down) by catching it with your middle finger instead and it'd be much easier than the pinkie.
