Great to see you again! You bring up a lot of good points with finding the best device for your workflow, which isn't always the fanciest, most expensive device :D

Great explanations on your choice. I'm about to buy the MPD218 due to it's simplicity just for the pads. I'm not into all the frills either.

This video was so informative. I just got into music production and bought ableton last year. I was so convinced that I needed a Maschine Mirko, but a good friend of mine told me to hold off. I got the MPD and it was the best bet. Lol some days I still daydream about getting a MPC Live.

If I may, I use my MPC Live (via USB to MIDI cable) with Ableton and it's a dream combo. Highly recommend.

Just went through the same thing, got rid of my MK3 and got the Maschine Mikro. I still like the NI Ecosystem, the MIDI Mode control with Logic and the feel of the gear but I never use Maschine software unless I specifically want to use a Maschine Expansion so the Mikro is what I settled on!

I love finger drumming! Just started a few months ago but I’m coming from real drums so it’s pretty seamless after a bit of practice. I bought the MK3 but definitely considered the Akia controller. Might even do both so I have a performance pad and a writing recording machine separately. Either way. Good info. Much appreciate

I have an MPD 218 and the old Maschine Studio and and a Maschine Mikro MK3. The only thing I hate about the Maschine hardware is that it only works with Maschine 2 software. The MPD 218 seems to work with other DAWs (Reason, Battery 4, Cubase) except Machine 2.

Hi, I'm just getting started and also saw quest for groove's videos. I also chose Ableton Live and Mk3. There is apparently a template that you can use for Ableton (from the NI website) that can be saved and allows you to have each of the pads mapped to it's own track, so you can get the benefits of the ease of finding the right drum from the myriad samples using Komplete, whilst not having to go through the aggravation of exporting and importing (generally, the whole beat on one track, I imagine). Keeping the kick separate, so you can use EQ to separate it from the Bass (if you use one) seems like a must have. If you constrain yourself to trying to fit the whole kit in a mix, I don't see how you could get the best results. But all this is from research, not experience. I'm looking forward to the journey of music production. BTW, I'm 60 and from the US (I just used the "whilst" to throw you off 😉). I appreciate you putting these videos out for others, like me, to learn from.

hey scott, welcome! I hope you have fun with your mk3 :) it is a lovely device. I used to use the mk3 ableton template. Glad you found it. Have a great day!

I did the opposite and went from ableton live and a mpd to the maschine mk3 and the increase in my focus is night and day. Having a complete groove box setup at my finger tips and never having to touch a mouse or look at another screen keeps me in flow. Still i agree with you which is why I never liked the machine mikro. If you already have a daw. The mpd is a better choice at that point.

i really liked the mk3 way more than the push 2 because I felt the same as you - the integration and workflow with maschine was just way smoother and make me bang out beats in a boom bap style super quick. But because I still work in ableton I like the mpd218 pads just to trigger drums :)

The Novation Launchpad Pro is better than the Ableton Push and Maschine MK3 which cost twice as much and aren't as user friendly. I got the MPD218 for it's portability and the pads are better too. $30 on craigslist best drummer ever shows up on time, doesn't talk back, or skip a beat!

I've been eyeing up one of these buy I'm gonna be good (for now) and not because I've got an MPC one which is perfectly happy to be a midi controller it just feels like a ballache. You mentioned portability - have you looked at Koala sampler on iOS? That is what in my imagination I would do with one. It's a pity there's no acceptable bluetooth midi pad controllers. Anyway, my point was you could plug that MPD218 into your phone and do a bit of finger drumming on-the-go.

I love koala sampler, got a lil vid on it somewhere here! BUT in general touch pads aren't great at having mulitple samples triggered at once, from a touch pad. So I wouldn't use a touch pad for a midi drum pad. But your point on connecting the mpd218 to koala sampler is a BRILLIANT idea, DEF guna try that, thanks!

A bit more "fair" comparison would have been MPD218 vs Maschine Mikro Mk3. buuut: the conclusion would have been the same, i m sure. Because the Mikro still has over 1kg of weight, AND: the endless encoders on the AKAI are actually very useful for Ableton. the Mikro has none.
