Biggest Ala Moana surf in 10 years

This was today, August 30th 2011 and it was the biggest swell on the South Shore in about 10 years. This was all shot at Ala Moana. Not even close to the swell of June 1974, it was an unbelievable swell. A 16’ cat was trying to get out of the harbor and was caught by a set wave and picked up and thrown back upside down. An outrigger was trying to get in and pummeled by the waves. One of the most memorable things was this small local surfer, he had some kind of physical abnormality to his legs. I watched him walk with his board and jump in the water, he paddled out and caught wave after wave. What was astonishing is he rode these waves that were 10’ to maybe 15’ on his stomach, unbelievable amount of courage and talent! I remember Michael Ho and Larry Bertleman were also surfing, great memory!

I was there for the swell of June 1974. It was at the time the biggest waves I had seen. Ala Moana was a solid 10’-12’ with bigger sets. It was absolute carnage for catamarans and outriggers. A few things I remember were a Hawaiian guy who appeared to have a physical ailment, he paddled out in very heavy conditions and took off and road the waves in on his stomach. Kewalows is a different break and is about 10 breaks west from Ala Mo and does not EVER HOLD this big ...ever. This was the biggest town swell in ten years. We got one almost this big this summer.

aloha excellent!! my home growing up was 1350 ala moana blvd. we could see both sides from the building rock pile on one side tennis courts the other. i miss my hawaii. keep the film comeing. god bless merry christ

Yeah it was actually perfect 6ft hawaiin. Day before my bday and it was cleaner and better just not those bigger sets coming through. It was still pretty solid though
