Note: Cabellas XMLTiS 6'6" medium light fresh water rod. Okay, so I'm a novice but it works fine for Spotted Bay Bass. I'll be the first one to admit, "I don't know what I'm doing"', but never the less, it was an experience that will never be forgotten. Oh boy, can't even imagine a 20 pounder. Your videos are inspiration. Now about that kayak.

Absolutely amazing video! Maybe the reason why that one rod keeps on going off is because if you’re fishing a depth change or some sort of break then that rod is fishing one side of that line while the other rod is on the other. If you keep fishing that break in the same direction and the halibut are also sitting on that one side of that break then that rod will always go off.

Nice fish, I think Halibut is in the flounder family correct? Here in Florida we have flounder but nothing that big, up north in Long Island NY we call them Fluke, some get quite big on the east end certain time of the year, not uncommon to find one 10lb or better, we call those "door mats"

@@owl911x7 Thanks for the reply bro. I just picked up my Hobie Revolution 13 yesterday. Looking to launch it after all this lockdown is over. I need tips on how to rig for halibut. From the video, it seems you don't have a weight at the end of your line and looks like you have a regular hook and a treble hook from segment at 7:68. Are you just using 2 hooks to fly fish and using live Squids on the hooks? Thanks in advance.

8/4/2020 9:05 pm Somewhat unrelated, caught a monster 10 lb. Halibut last night over by the Coronado, Glorietta Bay sea wall. Usually use a Warbaits weedless jig with swimbait looking for Spotties but after an hour of no bites decided to switch up to a Lucky Craft Flash Minnow. Started casting in a clockwise pattern towards the boat docks and working my way down south with no success. Next step, cast to the south about fifteen yards off the wall to the same location. Third cast and the water just exploded. Next thing and my rod is bent in half with line ripping off my Shimano 2500 Symetre reel with 8 lb. braid. Kept tightening the drag until there was barely any left and managed to turn him. Fifteen yards towards me and he decided to make another run for it with the reel screaming once again. Adrenaline really pumping by this time as he turned and started heading for the boat docks. Thought I'd lost him for a second but managed to turn him once again. Heart still pumping like mad as I made some lost ground and brought him close to the rocks by the wall. Knew I was in trouble if he made a dive and tangled himself up in the rocks and sure enough, that's exactly where he spent last of his energy. Thought he might be a great big Bat Ray but shining my headlight down, saw that it was a massive Halibut. Now for the lesson learned: Didn't have a net or gloves and even with the approaching high tide, the fish was still four feet below me at the water surface. Even as I thought afterwards, I might have taken the line, brought it back and wrapped it around the butt of the rod, the braid would have broken trying to haul him up and over the wall and glass railing. I live close by and regularly walk over to just relax and fish for Spotties. Nothing ever kept and just like to keep it simple with lures only. Never dreamed it possible that there were extra-large predator fish lurking about but I found out otherwise. Had to cut him loose and felt bad with the lure still stuck in the fish’s lip. If I'd had a net, would have released the magnificent creature back to his natural environment anyway. I'll never go over there unprepared again. I'll never forget the experience, a total adrenaline rush and a memory that won't be forgotten anytime soon. BTW Thank you for all your great videos, they are truly inspiring!

That was quite a haul in such a small boat. When I was fifteen, I went on a party boat out of Berkeley one afternoon, and caught 42lb and 28 lbs halibut off of seal rocks. I thought I hooked the bottom. The fish wouldn't budge! Then the skipper started yelling at me " I'm not letting the boat drift into the f---- rocks, damn it, either you get that thing up or I cut the line! It took all I had, but man, what a fish.
