It took grinding through the miserable coastal ships, to gaijin separating Bluewater from coastal just after i moved past them, and it took months later of school, lack of motivation or joy for really anything and I finally got the ship. A few fun facts about the Admiral Graf Spee: -unlike most surface ships of its time, it had a diesel electric engine which resulted in less smoke out of the funnel and higher range -although the British named it a pocket battleship, the Germans named it a "Panzerschiff" which translates to "armored ship", later in the middle of the war these ships were reclassified to heavy cruisers by the germans

“VT” or “Variable Time” fuzes were actually real proximity fuzes, variable time was just a cover term - just like tanks were a cover name to let the enemy think of water or fuel tanks. Germany had no properly working proximity fuzes, though they dabbled with stuff like the cruising RPM of bombers and use the frequency change thanks to Doppler to decide when to explode. What Germany had was timed fuzes that could be set/changed, I think, just before firing the shell - so literally a variable time fuze.

With the graf (or mogami for that matter) you want to use AP on heavy cruisers. He on CL's and anything else. With a maxed out, ace crew I can fire one salvo from the main battery, then switch to secondary and fire 4 more salvos. Trajectory is similiar, so switch back to main battery and fire again. With the mogami you can safely fire 3 from your secondary guns, before switching back to your primary.

I know I'm a dirty dirty outsider casual for commenting about WT using WOWS as a reference, but I'm going to share what I know on the KMS Admiral Graff Spee based on that version. It's straight up a battle cruiser. Take low caliber battleship guns and slap them onto a heavy cruiser that's fitted to use them. Everything else remains to heavy cruiser specs. So everything penning it is no surprise. If it was a full fledged BB, then it would be a problem. The reload time is about the same as in WOWS; painfully slow. More times than not it costs me my ship. It is a fun ship though because everyone tends to forget it's toting around torpedoes (like the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau) and it ends up costing them back. The heavier guns also can be a surprise as most people aren't expecting such a large care package from the KreigsMarine. I'm jealous of this version, though. WOWS's version has much worse dispersion. Like a full volley will land all 6 shots around the intended target. RNG-sus taketh and laughs. But all in all, I'm excited to see more and bigger ships in the game. It'll make things interesting.

The AP vs HE rule is thus; Always use HE for plunging fire, Only use AP in flat trajectory range. The rationale is that HE will be more effective against a deck or superstructure. AP does 2 things better, it goes right through the belt and saves you a few volleys, and it is much more likely to cause listing, which will slow and possibly disable guns depending on the list angle. It may even expose the super structure for a big HE hit. You have enough space for a little stash of AP, you won't run out of ammo, but flat range rarely comes up.

I'd say in general, for light cruisers and below pretty much only use HE as they're so little armour that the extra HE damage is really useful. But for Heavy cruisers and above pretty much AP only due to the level of armour, its much less likely for HE to pen

Phly, the Brooklyn is actually one of the best-armored ships in the game thanks to its "all-or-nothing" armor scheme which condenses all of its armor around only the most critical components (such as engines, transmissions, turret barbettes, and ammo magazines) so the armor can be thicker without causing the ship to become significantly overweight. Also, the US Navy and British Royal Navy discovered the rather counter-intuitive fact that ships with an "all-or-nothing" armor scheme were more durable than ships with a traditional distributed armor scheme, as APHE shells would be detonated by the outer belt, causing mass damage while HE shells could generally tear the ship apart regardless, but the unarmored sections of a ship with an "all-or-nothing" armor scheme caused APHE shells to just harmlessly pass-through and HE shell fragments would be absorbed by the thickly armored citadels, thus preventing any damage being done to critical components.
