My 4 year old son says he wants to be a beekeeper when he grows up and heads been saying this for over a year. We live on 140 acres in southeast Texas and are opening a winery/ meadery. I have reached out to our local bee community but... well, they are very proprietary and don't take to us "city slickers" too kindly (my husband has lived here for 22 years and I for 6 but we did move from houston). Essentially, I need recommendations on ethical beekeeping, the how to and not to. Recommendations?

Bee hive anatomy, physiology and socialization is fascinating. You can find a place to keep bees almost anywhere! But you need a good basic local bee club course. This is something I would never have tried without a a class and mentor.
@arlipscomb3 жыл бұрын
I have been keeping bees for over 40 years and it is pretty much nonsense. The "top bar hive' has been around a very long time, nothing new there. Bees overwinter in Langston hives all over the country with no problem, if the beekeeper does not screw things up for the bees. Leaving too many honey supers on is a mistake. It creates more area the bees have to keep warm. In the very cold areas two deep hive bodies are enough. Its all kind of cute that the guy puts on his costume and does the "off grid" stuff as he drives around in his minivan, but he is not someone you want to listen to about bees. (see for example Barnyardbees here on KZbin)

Just add more insulation to the hive and allow more honey to stay in the hive for the winter months. There are quite a few beekeepers in the colder states on KZbin to find. Might I also recommend to look at the top bar hive, a more natural way for bees to do their thing, a bit less productive in terms of honey production, but beekeeping is a hobby anyways.
