I like the rich, historical combination of technologies - warm, analog display technology from the 50’s, metal work and “new” glass made using metal working and glass blowing techniques dating back to Babylon, networked with modern 802.11, augmented with III-V semiconductors (LEDs), and precisely time synched w/ atomic-clock accuracy derived from a GPS satellite constellation. I first saw nixi tubes in the early 1970's on early digital weighing scales that my father used to repair. They were made in pre-multiprocessor days so all the 'processing' was analogue and dedicated logic chips (and/or/nand/xor etc) to achieve the analogue to digital conversion. The nixi's were promoted as 'natural appearing' digits rather than the 'stylized' 7 segment displays that were becoming popular. The scales were fiendishly expensive so component level servicing and trouble shooting was worthwhile. I last serviced one of them in the early 1990's. The predecessor to nixi's were 'decatron' tubes. Perhaps Techmoan could review something that uses those. PS: The price of this clock is outrageous; how can they market so much handcrafted work for that small amount?
@Planetary132 жыл бұрын
Cool do you know what brand that scale was?
@anthonyjackson2802 жыл бұрын
@@Planetary13 that is asking a lot from memory. i think, perhaps Doric. It was a 2 piece aluminum housing about 8" wide, 3 high and about 20 deep. There were 3 print boards plugged into the mother board. The analogue amplifier was discrete FETs with loads of shielding. The A to D was discrete components that used dual ramp integration. Cascaded decade counters did the digital conversion and display driving. Accuracy was 1 in 2000 and conversion rate about 3/sec. In order to service it we had to make extension cables for all the header pins/plugs that held the boards together. There were optional boards for push button zero (standard was an analogue 10 turn pt) and a printer driver.

I do love the orange glow of Nixie tubes, but as a child of the 80s I have a lot more nostalgia for VFD and LED clocks. Nixie tubes are more from the 50s-60s, and other similar displays with that kind of orange glow such as the Panaplex or Numitron were more a product of the 70s and didn't really last long on the market in the 80s. I never even saw Panaplex or Numitron until very recently on KZbin, let alone a Nixie tube outside of movies, they really weren't common here in Australia. For that reason I don't have any nostalgia for them compared to VFD or LED clocks. I don't have a need for one right now, but if I do get another clock, it will be an LED clock, and it will be one that I design and build myself using vintage 7 segment LED displays. I've got my eye on some larger ones which I believe are from the late 70s, but they're pretty pricey since they're from the US America, and the exchange rate combined with the cost of shipping is pretty brutal right now. Don't get me wrong, Nixie tubes look nice, but it's the nostalgia that draws me to VFD and LED displays.

It makes me smile to see the manufacturing of an "obsolete" technology coming back, even in a small way. Sometimes in our quest to make things cheaper and more feature-rich, we lose some charm and beauty along the way. The clearest example is probably the resurgence of mechanical keyboards. Rubber domes may be cheap and good enough most of the time, but they aren't as durable or pleasant to use. Considering the 15 year warranty, I think it's safe to assume the same will prove true of this (admittedly very costly) clock.

I’m in UK and got Dalibor's Puri clock 3 years ago and it still going strong. But apprently this Millclock completely copied Puri clock's design :|, wish they have something original.

Kudos to Dalibor Farny for inspiring a resurgence in nixie tube technology, influencing companies like Millclock.

Ooh, lovely. The pins on the tubes remind me of the wall connector on my grandparents' old telephone when I was a kid, which dated back to before the adoption of modular plugs. (The phone, not my childhood. I'm old, but not _that_ old. :) Random fun fact: I was watching a video on the Battleship _New Jersey_ Museum's channel the other day, and one of the suggestions was another BNJ video about the battleship's "Nixie room". I had idyllic visions of a room somewhere near the Combat Information Center that was full of nixie tube readouts for something, but it turns out "Nixie" is also the code name for a towed torpedo decoy, for the use of which there was a room at the very back of the ship with doors to throw the decoys out of and winches to pull them back in. Disappointing. :)

As i was reading your comment i imagined the range finding mechanical computers all having nixie displays.. i was then as dissapointed as you 😂

I imagine that they had a tube to keep the Nixie in, so there was at least one Nixie tube on board!

Yup, that is definitely a piece of art.

Beautiful product. Great review Matt. I'd buy one if I have the extra money and a YES from the misis. Seems very high quality and the wooden box looks exquisite.

I finally got my first nixie tube item recently and it's an old cannon calculator that was sitting in a trunk of my mom's uncle's in the garage of my grandma's house and I absolutely love it, I've always thought they were cool but your videos made me really want something that uses them

Watching this I'm debating buying a $2000 clock. You've done an amazing job. Thank you for sharing!

Awesome job, as usual, Matt. Your videos rock. I know you're generally a buyer not a seller, but if ever you want to get rid of the smaller version, I am certainly interested.

Back in 2010 I fell in love with the Chronotronix V400. Held off my decision to purchase and wound up missing out. Well this time, as they say: “Shut up and take my money!” Just placed an order. Thanks for the excellent review and for bringing this awesome clock to my attention.

Wow, I never thought in a million years I would go gaga over a clock but I can't stop looking at it! It's beautiful. I appreciate the work gone into it and would love one myself, but it's a little too rich for my blood.

I've always wanted a Nixie clock but never really got around to buying one. Seeing this, I immediately asked my wife if I could buy one and she told me no......but she did hint that I might get it for Christmas. I really hope so!

This is so well made that when you stated the price I wasn't at all surprised.

I was thinking about $2,000 USD right before Matt said the price. Expensive, sure, but for this level of craftsmanship and just love of the art, it's worth it.

Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing that. Refreshing to see incredible craftsmanship. Like flip clocks, nixies are a fun way to show the time. Something soothing about them. Not the usual LCD/LED.
@marcberm2 жыл бұрын
What I think would be really interesting now are faux nixie tubes made with filament-style LEDs (as in vintage/Edison style bulbs). The material might still be a bit too thick to have legible overlapping numerals in the same tube though. Maybe for a really, really, really big nixie clock!
@kaitlyn__L Жыл бұрын
That totally makes sense, the one shown on a train station at the start of the video appeared to be actual neon tubes. And you get those neon-replacement LED stripping with very good diffusion now, so you would just need to outfit that with amber LEDs and build your outdoor display! (LED nixie scoreboard, perhaps?)
@rossmyers84482 жыл бұрын
Considering all the 'hand made' involvement in this clock the price is more than fair, great to see new tubes are being made.
