The Lawler V Askren fight was 100% Lawlers fault. If you're in a position where you're being choked and you act like you're unconscious i.e let your arm go limp and stop fighting, it's not really the refs fault if he thinks you're unconscious.

actually in that situation the ref is suppose to check if the fighter is out, not just assume they are or aren't. Herb did this and then Robbie gave a thumbs up. Then Herb reacted to the thumbs up as if Robbie was tapping out...the gold standard alright.

I watched herb Dean breakdown why he stopped it and why the bulldog choke is so dangerous because once you stop fighting it it can literally break your neck. He said he was cage side at a Russian MMA event and it happened to a guy and he left on a stretcher and not able to feel anything from his neck down

That Anthony Johnson loss was one of the worst ref calls in MMA history and has made plenty of other videos/lists. You're right that it was obvious, which is why it's such a notoriously terrible call.

Isn't that the point of MMA? Those "fighters" want to hurt and kill someone, why not let them? If a ref has to pull you off someone to keep you from killing them than maybe there is something wrong with you. MMA fighters are trained murderers, I have no respect for them, they are animals. Askren saw the arm flop, loosened the grip in the second before the ref called it and Lawler was able to regain enough consciousness that by the time he was fully let go, he was able to seem conscious again. But arms don't just flop down like that if you're defending a choke.

Unfortunately that's not how that works, recovering from unconsciousness due to low blood flow to the brain can take 4-12 seconds to regain consciousness. As someone who specializes in jiu jitsu and has seen multiple people go out from a choke, never have I seen somebody "recover" from being out cold that quickly

@@adoniskeno9175 Then maybe you haven't actually fought people for real. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug. There are numerous examples of fighters losing consciousness then popping back up within a few seconds. Or even in this case, he might not have been fully out but close to losing consciousness and that's when his arm dropped, Askren loosened seeing that he'd won, then the referee split them up and those 2-3 seconds he'd regained enough oxygen to appear again fully conscious. Arms don't drop like that when you're conscious.

I still don't think the Askren stoppage is that bad. Lawler did go limp, if he wasn't out, he let his limb flap around while being checked. Also Herbs reasoning on why he didn't want to wait too long is valid. The Bulldog choke is a neck crank aswell. If Robbie was out and no longer resisting, you only got so much time till his neck starts to pop.

I disagree with the people saying that Askren Lawler stoppage was right. Instead Herb shouldve lifted Lawlers hand up off the floor and see if he responds. There are some great shots of Big John doing exactly that, actually checking if the fighter is awake before making that call based on solely what he thinks he sees. Had he done that we would actually KNOW whether Lawler was out or not... as it is, it was a poor call.

Von Flue chokes put people out pretty often, because it's something that rarely happens to experienced grapplers. Once someone passes your guard, you're trained to immediately let go a guillotine and to just try and regain your guard so that you don't get trapped in a Von Flue. I'm guessing that since inexperienced grapplers just desparately hold onto the guillotine because they don't know what to do, and then by the time the choke is applied properly, they're still wondering what is happening and are almost asleep.
