Yeah, I did my DNA test with Ancestry. I found a third cousin, twice removed who had already done a lot of family research. When I wrote to him, he already knew who my parents were and how we were related. We then started writing via e-mail and he was intrigued with my e-mail address because it sounded very similar to a distant relation. So, I found out my 11 times great-grandfather was a Barbary Pirate with the given name of Jan Janszoon. He was a Dutchman who was caught by pirates and basically became a Muslim and was given the name of Murad Reis the Younger or simply the Blonde Pirate. His most famous deed was when he went to Ireland and captured a lot of people and sold them into slavery in Algiers! And then one of his sons (my 10 time great grandfather) made his way to the New World and basically set up home in what is now New York City with his crazy Dutch wife. Knowing this has gone a long way to help me understand why my mother's side is a bit crazy. Haaaa!

I was adopted as an infant - it was a full mostly sealed adoption (the agency gave me first names only). Before DNA tests were widely done in this manner, I hired a private investigator to find my birthmother. She wasn't hiding - she wanted me to find her. And it turned out well for me, for the most part. But, she was a little bit cagey about my birthfather & I'd grown up with such a wonderful dad that I was hesitant to look for him. So, I waited. Then, the DNA testing started taking off & I really wanted to know my heritage. I knew that there was a chance that I could end up finding my birthfather this way, but my main focus was heritage & as much of the medical predisposition stuff I could find out (mostly for my children). I did find a half brother & half sister on my birthfather's side this way, which did eventually lead me to him as well. He also was glad I found him. So, I got a pretty happy ending from my results. :) My heritage, by the way, is not quite so complicated as yours. I'm mostly Irish & British (over 50%), with some German & Native American. That's pretty much it - LOL.

My mother’s side of our family kept a partial family tree, done in the 60’s, without the benefit of the Internet. My maternal grandmother was mostly English (Denham) & my maternal grandfather was mainly French (Peinteur). On my father’s side I can go back only to my grandmother who was born in Sweden (Elfstrom) ; & my paternal grandfather (Novak) had Bohemian relatives (which is Czechoslovakia today). Unfortunately I don’t have the financial resources to explore DNA at this time, but it is fascinating!

Last names make us feel like we have more of that ancestry than others. My last name came from a family thrown out of Flanders by the Romans who then settled in Scotland, but it turns out I’m only 1% from Flanders, and I’m far more Scandinavian and far more British. Ha! So fun!

One big surprise is that I turned out to be only 12.5% from a particular country whereas I had always thought I was 25% from this particular country. This prompted me to start doing some genealogical research on the two great grandparents in question. This is proving to be difficult. So maybe I will just have to learn to live with a mystery.

I wish you luck. Genealogical research can be tricky, since in many, especially American cases, the traces in the US are just a few generations old, and than you would have to go back to europe, where theres no guarantee or whatsoever that the language necessary to read the documents is spoken or someone speaks English over there. If the documents still exist and have not been destroyed in the wars of the last centuries.

I did an Ancestry DNA kit and found out I'm over 30% Irish, but there really weren't any surprises. I was contacted by an 8th cousin in Australia, but we can't figure out where the connection is because we both have gaps in our family history. Back in my father's family the name was changed due to some scandal. It could be related to a relative being shipped off to a penal colony in Australia and/or Georgia. We have no idea what the family name used to be.

K B Waowww your ancestry comes from the first crossbreeding between Europeans and Amerindians in North America. The first French settlers arrived in North America 300 years before the first Italians. Many Ameridians have a French ancestor in their DNA because French trappers married Amerindian women and they stayed in the tribe ...

Many people do not know the old story! The majority of northern Italy (Turin region, Milan, Genoa, Florence, Venice ...) have French ancestors. Explanations: Before the Roman invasion (2200 BC), the whole northern half of Italy was the Gallia Cisalpina -----> The Gallic are the Celtic ancestors of today's French ...
