People are always trying to talk me into monetizing my hobbies, but I actively resist it. I want my hobby to be a fun break from work, not a second form of work that pays less per hour than my actual job. Also, I always remember what an older guy I used to work with told me his friend who went into business for himself had said. "When you work a normal job, you have a boss. When you work for yourself, every customer is your boss." And its super stressful to have a hundred different bosses with a hundred different needs or demands on how they want things to be done. I don't need that kind of stress in my life. I'm too old to keep bending over backwards to do whatever I can do not lose customers.

"I think in order to be good at art, you have to go your whole life believing you're bad at art." As an artist, ironically, Tucker is right. You stop improving once you believe there's nothing left to learn. A large part of the art journey is falling on your face over and over and picking yourself back up knowing you'll fall over again. It's what makes masterful pieces so beautiful. You know the work was the culmination of years of skill and failure. And if you're in the middle of an art block right now and you're watching an anxious little man in your phone to procrastinate/ignore your current work? I see you, take this as a little message that it sucks and it's a struggle, but it's alright. We're all struggling together. Maybe enjoy that break and pick up that pencil/brush/stylus and try again in ten minutes. You got this 😀

@molluscumlore3 ай бұрын
Yep, but there's a balance. You can't look at everything you ever make and go "this is just dogshit. wtf am i even doing with my life" because that's disheartening and you might give up. But you also can't look at everything you make and think you're already up there with the greats, because then you never improve and the real greats never stopped improving. You gotta find some kinda subject you're insane about, get to the point where you enjoy your art of it well enough, then look to others art and see what THEY do that makes you more obsessed and try to get a similar effect. You could be a capital A artist looking to add metaphor to everything, or you could be just trying to draw pictures of your favorite silly little characters/animals/machinery/etc. Either way, you always gotta both enjoy your work and see the goal you want it to emulate in order to get good.
@Scarshadow6663 ай бұрын
@@molluscumlore Very true! There's more to it than just git gud or not when it comes to art - it's all about the process as well, and if you enjoy making it in of itself (sometimes it's a kind of love that hurts/is full of struggle, and other times it'll be smooth sailing). For some artists, it can be good to have a desire to level up ability-wise, but life isn't always about pushing the limits and sometimes drawing a simple scratchy, messy doodle in a sketchbook to relax a bit can work as well.

My hobbies include beekeeping, gardening, learning American sign language, and smoking weed while playing VRChat. I do digital photography with a DSLR as well, but not because of your reasons, Sir Tuckums. I use my 80mm fisheye lens and my DSLR set to bulb mode with a timer remote set at an offset in order to capture timelapses of the galaxy rotating overhead at night, typically out in the middle of nowhere, miles away from the interstate in state park territory. Phones can't do that yet, so I get stoned and stare literally out into space at the structures that surround us all right now. It hits different seeing it for yourself, out there away from everyone. Also, just a follow-up about the beekeeping thing. Honey, straight from the beehive is called Bees-legs, honey. My first year i got 4 _LITERS_ of honey... of which i then turned half into mead. Alcohol. I became a beekeeper and ended up with alcohol. The bees also pollinated my garden and set me up with mad tomatoes and squash, yo. To answer your question... yes both smoking and masturbarion are both hobbies. Anything you do in your free time regularly, that takes up a decent amount of time out of your day, that is done solely for pleasure or self satisfaction is a hobby.
@billyfox63683 ай бұрын
I feel as though a hobby is something where the time allocated is as a separate chunk of your day - smoking is done intermittently within other activities. As for wanking, I think that, 'decent', from your definition is the key word: if you really are allocating that much time, sure, it counts, but I suspect that most don't.
@pringlebatch3 ай бұрын
Maybe the thinking is that those two things are potentially highly addictive? But then again, so is gaming and probs a few other "legit" hobbies
@KarpetBurn3 ай бұрын
@billyfox6368 Smoking is done intermittently but most people who do smoke have at least a few per day, and spend around 5-10 minutes doing it per session, Id say that adds up enough time to qualify as a hobby, you could even say eating is a hobby to some extent, if its done solely for the enjoyment of flavors instead of a desire to fill up it could be considered a hobby, just eating junk food. For me a decent amount of time is anywhere from 30 minutes+ per day you do the hobby.

Smoking, yes, but masturbation is actually great for the health;when it's done safely with clean hands or a proper toy. Stuffing a Christmas tree up your ass or whatever some of these dudes be doing is not safe but the occasional wank or flick of the bean is great it's when people start being constantly on their couch watching porn and masturbating instead of actually doing their work and taking care of themselves when it becomes a problem. Anything can become an addiction and anything when it becomes an addiction or an obsession is bad.

@@Zanemob I get where you're coming from, and you're mostly right, except I don't do anything sexual in my fanfics. That's never been my thing, I also don't know why people enjoy doing that. @@Zanemob fanfiction is just people writing fiction about media theyre fans of. thats literally the entire thing. quite a bit of fanfiction IS sexual, yes, but it doesnt have to be. it could be anything from “what if these two characters kissed or more” to “what if these characters were actually living in a completely different setting (e.g. fantasy characters in a modern setting)” to “what if the story was the exact same but this happened at the end instead”. this is oversimplified but thats basically what fanfiction is

My dad is a train guy. I love to garden (my profession and my hobby). A few years ago, I installed a garden in his backyard with plants, rocks, and trained small shrubs for him to build his outdoor layout. He's a retired veteran, and his train set is where all the neighborhood men gather to crack a beer. Does he literally have 2 bedrooms and a large shed stacked to the gills with trains which he used to joke was our college money when we were younger? Yes. But it makes him happy. Plus, there's nothing that attracts more neighbors to come hang out than a front yard train set. Folks used to pull up lawn chairs and sit for a couple hours. I loved it as a kid.

6:45 hey, I can actually answer this one. The reason why you would want to stick to a DSLR or a mirrorless over something like a point-and-shoot digital or even a smartphone is entirely based on things like your sensor size. The image sensor used in a phone camera is incredibly small and can only capture so much detail but a high quality DSLR sensor is several magnitudes larger and can take insanely detailed photos from things super small to super large. The other big thing of course is lenses. Some lenses are several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars and they are 100% justified at that price point for what they're used for.
