Aircraft Life Vest Full Detailed Demonstration

I have had opportunity from time to time to get a hold of aircraft life vests that have reached their expiration date and can no longer be used aboard the aircraft. This has provided me with the opportunity to try them out. I have also had some flight attendants deploy and inflate them. Even after their training in the airline safety program are startled and surprised when they go through the full process and pull the handles on a live vest and fire the inflation cylinders. In training they are taught how to put it on and how to demonstrate how to put it on for the passengers but most never actually have the chance to fire a live vest. Last week one of the flight attendants with 10 years experience fired a life vest for the first time. It startled her. In those few seconds she learned so much more about using the life vest that she did not know before. Always the people that have the opportunity to try one are very appreciative because they did not realize what would actually happen.

Nice demonstration. I believe another reason they don't want you to inflate the life vest inside the plane is buoyancy. If the plane has filled with water past the doors and you inflate the vest before the door, you may not be able to get yourself underwater to get out of the plane.

That’s exactly the reason and I was hoping the video would mention it. Apparently that happened to a bunch of people in the Ethiopian 961 ditching, where people floated to the top of the ceiling and couldn’t get back down to the exits and drowned.

The one thing he doesn’t mention is that, when the CO2 cartridge method of inflation is used, the vest becomes very cold, and the chill is a bit of a shock the first time you experience it.

You don't inflate it in the aircraft so you don't get stuck at the top of the plane if it floods

Interesting fact: you only have to pull one of the cord to inflate the vest, the reason there’s two is in case one doesn’t work. That’s why when you pull the two cords the vest inflates right up to your face 😊

*You don't inflate it in the aircraft, because it often results in you being trapped in the airplane as it sinks in water. Uninflated you can actually swim out of the wreckage as it sinks.*

Because you only inflte as you leave the aircraft; most videos are of Flight attendants performing a safety demonstration. No one wants to encourage passengers to inflate on an airplane; it must only be done as you leave.

It can be reused if you replace the CO2 cartridges, but for training purposes only. You can also manually inflate/deflate as many times as needed, as long as the vest has not been compromised with rips/tears.

Just wondering: how did you release the air using the tubes? Also, in a real life situation, how would you manage to get the tape off so that the light will activate? You wouldn’t have a knife, etc. thanks!

Shayna Kapple hello , For the lamp thing you do not need to cut it ! He did it to show you as an exemple because he couldn’t put the whole thing in water. For the air release he just pulled the red thing and it automatically fill the floater

You don't inflate it inside the plane (unless you're stupid) to not get stuck inside. In Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, many passengers died because they inflated their life jackets in the cabin, causing them to be trapped inside by the rising water.

one vital tip you need to know is never inflate you life vest untill you are fully out of the airplane if you ditch in the water

I have got one of these of eBay but I see videos where people hope not to get blown up by the co2 things should I take them oyt if there past expiration date (with it is)

Depends what you use it for. Some applications may legally require them to be discarded at expiration date. If it is for personal use I do not see any need to discard the co2. It is permanently sealed and I have never heard of one even leaking. The c02 cartridge does contain high pressure compressed carbon dioxide gas and could explode if you are wearing the vest while you are being burned in a fire or run over by a tank.
