Alright, there is a lot to cover here in the resources Post: First, at one point in the video I do state that Hollis believed Harrison was a genius, and this is probably the case, but it isn't outright stated, its something cobbled together from several resources across multiple entries. Beyond that, all data and information used to make this video, can be found in the following sourcebooks: Technical Readout 3025 (Original): Technical Readout 3039: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-technical-readout-3039-pdf I had to brush up on Quads a bit because I've not played with them in literal years, and to do so I went to the Battlemech Manual: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-battlemech-manual-book-pdf-combo XTRO Primitives Volume 4: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-experimental-technical-readout-primitives-iv-pdf (for the Xanthos and tons of interesting information about Dr. Harrison) XTRO Boondoggles: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-experimental-technical-readout-boondoggles-pdf (for the Scorpion LAM) TRO 3050 (original): TRO 3055 Upgrade: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-technical-readout-3055-upgrade-pdf-1 (for the Tarantula) TRO 3060: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-technical-readout-3060-pdf (for the Stalking Spider, and a few references to other designs) TRO Dark Age: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-technical-readout-dark-age (for the Xanthos) Final Reckoning: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-jihad-final-reckoning-pdf (For the Revenant) Recognition Guide 19: store.catalystgamelabs.com/products/battletech-recognition-guide-ilclan-vol-19 (A few Scorpion references) And I think either TRO 3145 or TRO 3150 for more information on the Revenant. There you all go. I hope you enjoyed the video.

This was my first question. It would also mean that, if I understand the game rules right, the damage to an "arm" or side torso" wouldn't automatically shear off a leg in terms of tabletop game mechanics. I mean... just put a torso and arms on top. Losing 1 leg is probably not as bad or, at worst the same, as a biped mech losing one of its legs

You know oddly enough if they ditched the whole idea of having it keep the jump Jets after deployment it could have been a really interesting and useful tool in planetary invasion if they just dropped it from low orbit and had a ring of thrusters that attached into it slow it down enough to deploy behind enemy lines as a forward scout/ harasser. But no, that's too much like the hover drop maneuver and the inner sphere can't have nice things like that

Ah quads, the weird redheaded stepchild of Battletech. Props to Red for covering them. The intro really set the stage for the entire video, especially the comment by Red at the very end of it. The Revenant was a new one for me, and a really scary concept if used in a fully supported deployment, not in a last ditch meddle finger to your foes.

I remember hearing about the tarantula being disturbingly scary... The idea of the role of the Quadmech overwhelming foes in a ground assault by Harrison may have been utter nonsense, yet the creation of the Revenant echoes a future where quadleg dronemechs descend upon a world like a tide of locusts.
@bthsr7113
@bthsr7113 6 ай бұрын
Funny you compare them to locusts. Devouring all in their path, until they slumber on a dead world, waiting for something to eat. There is a setting I know of where 4 legged autonomous monsters swept over a world devouring and muliplying until it became one giant waste. A toxic expanse of nothing. But to tell you its name is to spoil it.

Listening to the video, part of me feels like the Quads also suffer from awkwardly trying to use the basic mech hit location chart. I understand wanting to keep things simple by reusing it, but I feel like part of what would make Quads appealing is their unique profile whare half the machine's components are obscured behind the other half in every firing arc(at least on the ground, from above or below it all free game) This would make that "battle line wave" idea that was described make sense. You could up armor the front legs and torso components while leaving the back kess armored, maybe move the ammo back there, and then have them phalanx together to protect that weakness(or you know, have other combined arms cooperation strategies going on)

Loved the quad history! As a player who frequently encounters Neo-Aksarben forces on the field (as allies or enemies...), I see a lot of Scorpions (and the occasional Goliath) alongside all the gun tractors. This has influenced my own collection, and it's good to get the history of these odd machines, as I'm not always certain which TRO has them in them, so these videos are great. Besides, everybody and their brother has videos about other more popular mechs, covering such oddities stands out!

I would love to see a mech that can walk on either two legs or four. I see it as a weird inner sphere heavy with a load out similar to the archer. On all fours, it moves fast, but not very agile- and uses LRM's on the back in combo with two small lasers on the head. While standing, it has limited torso twist but gains use of 4 medium lasers, two per arm with solid firing arcs. The cockpit is sphere shaped and rotates as it stands or drops to stay facing forwards. While running it can bombard with LRM'S and handle infantry with its small lasers. Or drop prone and hull down. While standing it's slower, but with some torso twist and arm firing arcs.

@josharmstrong8813
@josharmstrong8813 6 ай бұрын
God I love the weirdness that is Quads, practical in concept (4 legs are better than 2), but absolutely shafted by rules/ lore basically excluding them I hope they make some quad exclusive rules to help them preform in the game like perhaps: • Allowing them to walk sideways/ strafe perhaps to aid in movment options and allowing it to more easily maintain lock on targets • giving more room in the torso areas to help offset the lack of arms or allowing to mount wepons in a similar maner to the arms but without the bonus as there mounted to the hull • Improved accuracy due to a more stable platform • Overall i think that quads can really shine if just given the chance and be a unusual but unique mech to the lineup As much as quads get a bad rap I just cant help but love them for there unique looks and the idea of a big metal bug scuttling around or a massive tank with legs that wouldn't look out of place on Hoth XD Now im not saying there better than conventional mechs i just like the playstyle idea of a stable fireing platform that can reliably hit targets at range but may suffer due to the lack of arms P.s. I love the touch when the goliath is show and the hallelujah music plays like its the chosen one going to lead all quads to a promised land free of hate and janky rules😂 maybe you guys may have an idea to make quads work in there own odd ways Conclusion: I just think there neat :) and thank you for listening to my tangent

an advanced rules that might be interesting to try out that might help quads a little bit - the rear torso is the *underside*. If a mech is at the same or higher elevation it simply cant hit the rear, and a reduced chance if at a lower elevation. But, armor and infantry can hit the rear torso normally (infantry perhaps at a bonus). Perhaps partial cover giving it a huge bonus to protect the legs? though, there is also the advanced rule where partial cover provides no bonus, but can instead absorb hits if the random hit location is covered, so there is that too. I also think the advanced construction item of 'turret' should be pretty standard (and maybe even free) for quads

I will disagree with you on one point, I don't think Harrison was a fool. He was ahead of his time, therefore didn't have the tech he needed to succeed and was overly optimistic of his ideas. Quads will never take over from bipeds but they could function beside them (or behind them) in specialty roles; they have a place even if there be few who use them.

Took a bit longer to get to this, as I wanted to be able to pay attention closely. This was a great video, a good example of one of your long-form videos (like the slightly longer Warhammer IIC video). I look forward to giving at least two of the Quads a shot once my Kickstarter stuff arrives.

I can see a quad design being good for mounting AA weapons,give it a nice flat back to mount upward facing missile racks or a gun turret to deny the skies. Other than that,get a tank or a biped mech.

Hello Big Red, I LOVE quads! ☝🏻 However, I construct them from scratch myself. I NEVER use a pre-fabricated quad 'mech. I always put in turrets so it can "torso-twist", double heatsinks, and I do like to use a COMPACT ENGINE & a COMPACT GYRO to free up some internal space. I also ALWAYS use Case II. Seyla!

I’ve considered myself a Comstar/word of Blake fan for a long time, but this is the first time I’ve looked far enough into the timeline to see the fall of the WoB and learning about the Revenant… this thing is a horrifying portent for the future of the setting.

I’ve been watching one of the “inspirations” for BattleTech Dougram. It’s interesting how in their origin series the Quad Goliath & Scorpion were outdated machines in the process of being replaced by Bipeds. Meanwhile in BattleTech Quads like the Goliath & Scorpion were sidegrades & novelties at best and flawed dead-ends at worst.

Quad mechs sound like a good idea, but probably should've leant in harder in being a slower moving and harder hitting weapons platform. A turret with 4 legs and the ability to do 360 rotations would be a neat idea.

Though not a quad lover, I definitely enjoyed the education on quad history. Quads might have gotten a few things better, they only prove that some dreams are actually are a delayed nightmare. At least Hollis managed to be partially redeemed through the success of the Battle Master.

I'm glad to see Quad Mech getting some content. These mechs are victims of wonky rules. I think we all understand the conceptual problems with bipedal mechs, but we flipped the "I, believe" switch on when playing the game. Sadly, that switch got flipped off when it came to Quad Mechs. Shame, they could have been very cool and useful in the game.

Unlike LAMs, quads make me sad cause the logic behind them is totally reasonable. (I.e. higher stability/moving turret) It’s just a shame that *most* aren’t executed well.

The problem with Quad Mechs is that they're inherently badly designed. The mistake was in mimicking an animalistic profile. If all you wanted was the advantage of additional stability and increased armour then the design should have been a quadrupedal humanoid Mech design which provides you with the best of both designs whilst eliminating many of the flaws. Build in an ejection system for the legs and an ability to move the pelvis back and forth and you even eliminate the advantage of shooting a leg off, doubling its durability.

yeah you get it... start with the Scorpion: just by going to 50 tons you get 2 tons to use to improve the mech and only lose a few points of internal structure, just a tiny tweak and you get a far better mech

I also imagine they would fare better in a non TT environment, such as mwo or mw5. Lower profile, harder to shoot, capable of moving sideways while shooting, and with more effect from small terrain differences helping cover them. It's already a pain shooting a flea up close, imagine one half it's height. TT is a bit of a limited applied environment.

The entire main issue of quads in universe is that even low profile ones shake the ever loving piss out of the pilots while even at a slow pace. Putting the pilot on top of what is essentially a tower would only make that issue way, WAY worse. Imagine riding at the tip of a metronome as it swings back and fourth and still being expected to aim at something mid combat and not blow chunks while ALSO being at a real risk of the weight of your own neurohelmet breaking your neck through whiplash with every step. And the whole "leg eject and waist slide" idea would be needlessly overcomplicated and expensive, like a LAM but less versatile. Remember the Daiboku? I do. The real problem is that there is literally no reason at all for the TT quad rules to be as needlessly bad as they are. There's no reason why you can't eject from one other than a rule designer taking the piss and the whole idea of having more legs should indeed mean that you shouldn't be COMPLETELY screwed when losing one, especially when tripod Mechs exist. The real problem is that the old guard is too afraid to make the AGGRESSIVE rule changes that need to be made for quads to make sense next to biped and quad designs.

When I originally played Battletech, I never gave quads a chance (outside of piloting the clan refit of the Tarantula buried in the cheat codes of Mechwarrior 2), but the clix game of all things actually convinced me to give them a chance many years later. They definitely have their flaws, but they perform no worse than many of the other niche bi-pedal mechs of the game when used properly. As long as they can stay in their lane, they can be quite effective. …kind of like how your opinion of the Raven will change drastically if you’re playing a larger-scale, double-blind game or a 1v1 Solaris duel in the Steiner Stadium.

I thought it was a great video. I like your Insight on the quads mech. The Scorpion mech still holds a special place in my heart. For all its flaws and little quirks the one thing I like about the Scorpion mech is how many other mech out there can stand behind a level one hill or mountain and not get shot at unless it's by indirect fire. I do have ones like the clan variant where it's a 5/8/5 with double heat sinks. It has an ER PPC, a medium laser, an ER small laser, and a streak SRM 6 with 1 ton ammo with a case system that has 9 tons of armor standard. That's one variant of mine.
